Aahhh takes me back to when I was 5 years of age when the Welsh National Opera performed Carmen at the North Wales Theatre, Llandudno. I remember sat there with my Mum & Dad, my brother was performing a sword dance along with other schoolmates. The WNO incorporated a performance from a local school that I attended with my brother. Towards the end of the sword dance the 8 boys, facing outwards formed a circle holding the wooden ‘swords’ they then turned around facing inwards still connected by the swords. After a few seconds the boys parted the circle leaving one boy in the centre holding up all the swords connected together forming an octagram. I was mesmerized. This memory returned to me 45 years later with me having in my hand some bamboo food skewers. I then proceeded to connect the skewers together to form a pentagram. This, within a few weeks evolved (with a little help from a bolt of lightning) into a structure that has fascinated myself and others since. My profile image you see top left is a product of the structure. So Carmen was the inspirational seed. I only wish I had come with the structure when I was studying architecture.

Nietzsche brought me here. So many iconic pieces I have heard over and over my entire life, with no clue they were part of a single Opera.

the Micaela singer is nice but the singer doing Don Jose has a very weaker-bland voice type totally unfitting for the role as it evolves from Act 1 to Act 4. Though well, the Carmen singer has a very lightier voice too so isn´t much unmatching then either way

Learning a language is always a great idea (even though doing it through opera might be a little difficult). How did you do?

I really enjoy my plate of sunny side up eggs 🥚 served over a bed of steel cut oats (oatmeal, lumpy). The opera of Carmen makes breakfast especially meaningful

The ONLY good thing about this production was Carmen’s beautiful bare feet!! I haven’t heard a tenor this bad in a very long time!! Watch Del Monaco and Arkhipova, then you’ll understand!!!

It’s definitely a lighter-voiced cast anyway, but sadly I think the role of Don José is too big for this tenor. It’s a lovely voice, but he sounds throughout like he’s working way too hard.

Yep. You need a spinto or dramatic tenor for Don Jose.

An good Opera needs well schooled voices, but not today... Orchestras playing quieter to make it possible singers are audible for the audience- or singers simply got microphones under their wigs. A Carmen should sound also dramatic too so she needs well supported chest voice and high registers but everyone seems to be scared of that these days so they sing not even half voice... Listen to Obratsowa she was a good singer, a fine Carmen with temperament and a better actor. But it's not the singers fault alone, it lies to the directors who ask stupid things of them... Sorry but today's singers are not even middle Master level from the past!
