So, Valentina creates a hybrid here of several versions ('47, '68) and throws in a few of her own licks for good measure. Ultimately, she makes the piece her own, and if it does not exactly go completely according to plan, she deserves credit for putting her own imprimatur on a glorious encore that has, over time, become virtually a staple of top pianists the world over. I always refer back to THE master -- Volodya himself -- as the ultimate benchmark for ALL the disparate elements curated into an organic entity for this piece (and many, many others in his repertoire), but congratulations are in order for the young Lisitsa, who is amazing, with a quickly recognizable style that makes for distinctive artistry. Brava!

I'm not qualify commenting her performance. She is herself. I enjoy every moment of her performance, so as Valentina. It is important the pianist need to be selfish. When a pianist busy to entertain audience, themselves play music like a jukebox. I am looking forward for Carmen Valentina variations on KZbin!

Next to Horowitz', which is the benchmark for this piece, this is the most electrifying version that I have heard. PLUS, her interpretation is so original. She has created an amazing and unique performance without falling into the trap of becoming a second rate copy of Horowitz.

For all you cry babies who can't suck it up, a pianist ( or literally ANY MUSICIAN ) can play a piece how THEY WANT, it's up to them and them alone how they want to play any piece of music, for some it feels better or more natural to play something differently, you will live, half of the people complaining about this couldn't play this if they were born with ten hands. So get over it, if you don't like it then dont watch or listen to it, stop finding excuses in your sad life to complain and bicker about something petty. Valentina Lisitsa is one of THE top pianists alive this day and that have ever been. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone plays differently, that's called being human and that's what seperates everyone from each other. Music should not be played the same each time because yknow how boring that would get to hear it always played the same? You aren't going to die because of it. Have a good day and I hope you change your view on things like this instead of crying about it.

Valentina is my favourite pianist without a doubt. Her talent is prodigous. Her touch and intonation are sublime. Her Rachmaninoff is something very special. Listen to her play the Second Movement from the Rach 3. Staggeringly brilliant.

As much as I love Valentina's playing I have to give this one to Horowitz. I give the nod to Horowitz mostly because he achieves greater clarity in the left hand figures.

LISITSA MAKES HER LIVING AS A PIANIST - I ALSO MAKE MY LIVING AS A PIANIST - SHE IS IN THE CATEGORY OF THE FINEST CLASSICAL PIANISTS OF ALL TIME - NOT ME - I HAVE NEVER CRITICIZED HER BECAUSE SHE (IN MY OPINION) IN A CATEGORY ABOVE CRITICISM AND YOU COULD ONLY COMPARE HOW HER INTERPRETATION STRIKES YOU OR HOW IT COMPARES WITH ANOTHER CLASSICAL PLAYER IN THAT ELITE AND ULTIMATE AREA. I WAS, HOWEVER , ASTOUNDED WHEN I HEARD HER ENTER THE FINAL SECTION (3:11) AT THAT KIND OF TEMPO - SHE DID MAKE AT LEAST ONE NOTE MISTAKE AND MORE TELLING, HAD TO BACK OFF THE TEMPO TWICE AND THEN RESUME - NOTHING ON THE PLANET IS 100% PERFECT - SHE IS MY HERO.

As a pianist myself, I think she is brilliant. This is an older version of the Carmen Variaitons she is playing. Horowitz changed and revised this transcription several times over the years. She is an excellent pianist.

I believe Lisitsa is an amazing pianist with virtuoso skills...However, she is no comparison to the legend Horowitz was and completely undermined the concept of this piece. What is happening at 3:11? Wrong tones, horrible touch and sound quality, plus variations in tempo. Literally, this was shit. But well, she is a great pianist and if anyone want to see her true abilities go check out her interpretation of Liszt's Hungarian rhapsodies.

+Ronnie Stone - Would be ridiculous to compare to Gorovits any gentle lady, even if and in the 21st century... Gorovits is level slightly lower Rachmaninov and Benno Moiseevich! Nevertheless, Valentina Lisitsa's level is perfectly audible in her performance of the Rhapsody on Paganini of Rachmaninov, with youth Baltik-orkestrа: here where really real level of the tremendous pianist and musician!

@ytschlittk Did she tell you to make this comment? No, she didn't tell me anything. It is obvious. Of course I can show you a better performance: Horowitz himself, either his TV concert from 1968 (not available on KZbin) or his live performance from the White House (1978, available on KZbin). Nobody wants you to agree, but what makes you eager to inflict your opinion on people who disagree with you?

Yujia is a bit boring and monotonous for my liking... As far as clean sound goes, I think the recording quality of this video is not really good... that's why you get the fuzzy sound when valentina hits the lower notes. Valentina does a few flubs here though, not denying that, but this was when she was pretty young and this was probably just after she decided to take piano seriously. Still, she manages to give the piece a lot of colour and her left hand as always is

Valentina Lisitsa is incontestable one of the very leading pianists at the moment. She has a solid technical background with ability to relax at any moment and she has a natural born musicality which comes with a good understanding of structure . There is no doubt that her career can be compared to Martha Argerich or similar....

This is not, however, the same version Horowitz played in...(whatever the place is you all know which video i'm talking about haha). This is one of the hundreds of versions that Horowitz did from his variations. Seriously he had lots of them. If you watch the cadenza right at the end you'll see that it differs from one video to the other. This one is considerably more complicated and Valentina managed to play it wonderfully.

@ytschlittk OK, obviously we are both missing the point. As expected, since we obviously have very different opinions of pretty much everything. For my part, there is no such thing as ''definitive'' performance. Otherwise, some pieces by Rachamaninov should never have been played by other pianists. I am glad this is not the case. And when I said what Valentina thinks, I of course meant that this is what I think, based on what I hear. I thought this is obvious.

Very sub-standard playing, with her own variants sounding like she's lost her way,(even if she hasn't!). Labored in style & pace, the piano quickly out-of-tune,(as always with VL),this shows her limits even more than in standard repertoire,(where you expect her to be clueless&boring).Horowitz himself,(young or aged),beats this hollow in virtuosity, or try young Yuja,(backstage on practice piano!)for true devilry!

My apologies to all of you Horowitz worshippers, but I think her performance of this piece is better. And I'm not just saying that because I'm in love with her. Along with her fabulous technique, she has what Horowitz himself used to refer to as "jeu perle", which he describes as a certain ease and elegance in playing. Impossible to define, but you know it when you hear

Her playing style is uniquely jumpy. That's how she plays, I'm sorry, but tbh, every pianist will have their own shadow in the music, that's why if you want to judge, you cannot be subjective by just based it on your own preferences, but rather, be technical.

Well, I think Valentina is superb in this performance. She's sprinkled her own subtleties throughout, adding even more interest (and difficulty) to the already-exciting piece, and she's heaped on more demanding effects and vicious tempos adding up to a startling ending. (I think she borrowed a little from another Horowitz version in the final octave cascade.) She's a gift. Bravo!

Another modern virtuoso who thinks that Horowitz's Carmen Variations are a mere technical exercise for your piano muscles. There is much more than that in this piece. Valentina is not even technically at Horowitz's level, let alone musically. At about 2:20 there is a true cacophony. The finale is all but inlistenable banging. Appalling performance!
