Fun facts about this album! : - This album came out after the 9/11 terrorist attacks during an extreme hostile environment towards immigrants, and making a vocal album is her way of finding unity between people through the human voice. - Ancestors features an Inuit throat singing style practiced in Inuit culture. I had the chance to witness it in Canada in-person and it was such an amazing experience of culture and sound. - She actually performed Oceania at the Olympics! kind of fitting because her whole album is about finding unity across all people through the human voice and the olympics is where people from all cultures and backgrounds gather. hope this was interesting!

Fun fact about Ancestors: Actually, the singer who accompanied Björk, who's name is Tanya Tagaq, said in an interview that this song was an improvisation (she is a throat singer i believe) and it just so happened to match perfectly with a demo Björk previously made, and that is pretty much the story behind it, i really love the song, the way it just embraces it's weirdness and actually made me cry after a couple of listens. The whole concept of the album, the birth of a child, the desire of becoming a parent and the raw feeling of creating life just drives me crazy, and that is why it is one of my ultimate favourite Björk albums.

I heard somewhere that she composed ancestors after giving birth. It was inspired by her breathing exercises during labour.
@River.s.3 жыл бұрын
*Pleasure Is All Mine-* "As the songs of this album were written after the birth of her second child, Isadora, many of the songs were inspired by her experiences and feelings on motherhood. Like “Mouth’s Cradle”, this song is about breastfeeding and the feelings of compassion and bearing strength to her child. Here, she is expressing how it is her pleasure to give her energy and strength through nursing her daughter." - Genius Lyrics *Show Me Forgiveness -* This song was actually written in 1999 but she shelved it until she was actually partially inspired by it to make this album *Where Is The Line -* This song is about her relatives in Iceland asking for money and mooching her for her newfound wealth as a pop star *Vökuro-* This was actually an Icelandic lullaby reshaped into a choir song and is about a father watching over a little girl named Lily *Öll Birtan -* [This one is specifically gibberish] *Who Is It? -* "This is a song I wrote at the end on Vespertine, but I didn’t put it there because I felt it was from a different family - Vespertine was introvert and shy and not very physical a record, and this was a very physical song that I wrote when I was feeling quite strong again." - Björk *Submarine -* Actually couldn't find much on this song but I suppose it ties to the theme of the ocean *Desired Constellation -* The background noise is actually very remix of Hidden Place From Vespertine Specifically “I’m not sure what to do with it” it was distorted to the point where it became this beautiful noise *Oceania -* This one is basically about how the Ocean itself is technically the Mother of all life on Earth and humans, even describing the lands forming in front of her in the blink of an eye while life counts the centuries *Sonnets / Unrealities XI -* "The lyrics on the tenth track of Björk’s Medúlla are “it may not always be so; and i say” by e.e. cummings." - Genius Lyrics *Ancestors -* This one is important, as it's a look into what the album originally could have been like ; She originally was picturing a prehistoric/caveman album for Medúlla but it grew up into her own thing This song kinda being the only trace of that lineage and implying the gibberish is our ancestors attempting to communicate or sing *Mouths Craddle -* This song is about breastfeeding and how she wants to shield her children from the world *Miďvikudags -* [This one is specifically gibberish] *Triumph Of A Heart -* This one is littleraly just about breathing
@metehanayan25453 жыл бұрын
Actually, submarine is first song she wrote for this album. She couldn't start preparing an album and creating something because of the motherhood and other artistic work. So in this song she counsels herself to start her creative process. To overcome the creative blockage she was in. Just sit down, write a song and start from there

I'm so happy you got to this one! Who Is It (Bell Choir Mix featuring The Bústaðakirkja Bell Choir) was the single and video version, and worth checking out. It wasn't on the album as it's instruments. Desired Constellation sounds like an electronic song, but is actually all voice too, the music is a sample of Björk singing the phrase “I’m not sure what to do with it” from “Hidden Place” on her previous album, Vespertine. Medulla and Vespertine both worth listening on headphones with, so many intricacies!

YAY BEEN WAITING FOR THISSSS AH, fun fact the bass synths in who is it and desired constellation where made with edited vocal samples, one of the best things about this album is how it showcases how powerful the human voice is, im glad finally someone likes ancestors on a reaction to, my fave track, gibberish yet something super human and emotional and primitive about it that speaks louder then words, the moaning is throat singing
@disuba3 жыл бұрын
19:40 The throat singing is not Björk. It’s Inuit singer Tanya Tagag. She’s an indigenous singer that uses throat singing in a contemporary way. She’s most of the voices in Ancestors. She’s amazing and also her twits are funny and fire. Throat singing is an Inuit tradition and it is a kind of an endurance competition between two women until one can’t keep it going. The dizziness and oxygen overtaking is part of the trance they are trying to achieve.

yay! medulla is absolutely one of my favourites too! :D Vökuró is a traditional Icelandic lullaby, and for desired constellations - it is actually her voice heavily chopped up and edited in the background. the least vocal sounding for sure (except the piano on ancestors, which i believe is an actual piano) Oceania was sung on the opening of the olympics in Athens 2004. her dress covered the whole stadium :D check it out! Ancestors is a duett with Tanya Tagaq doing traditional inuit throat singing. such a powerful song! and a bit of a shock for most people the first time.. haha. still probably my favourite on the album ^_^ triumph of a heart is very chaotic but has the most fun music video! björk partying and getting dead drunk with her friends in Iceland after a fight with her cat husband 😆worth a watch

If you love Who Is It and want to hear a version of it with actual instruments, I'd recommend checking out it's live version from her Voltaic tour. She uses horns and bells for that version. Alot of the songs on Medulla started out with actual instruments until Björk decided to strip them off and replace them with human voices. She said "I wanted the record to be like muscle, blood, flesh. We could be in a cave somewhere and one person would start singing, and another person would sing a beat and then the next person sing a melody, and you could just kind of be really happy in your cave. It's quite rootsy"

“How am I going to make it right?” Is a cry from a music goddess who wants to align the universe in a way in which we’re all happy. Also, all those short breathing techniques you hear in Ancestors refers to throat singing which was a way in which early humans communicated prior to the ability to speak
