model84 I don’t know about the umbrella term. Maybe in MMA communities but grappling exists outside of bjj. Heck even. The act of removing pinning makes it hard for a lot of grappling styles to win those tournaments cause the tactics are based around pins. So how would they win anyway?

95% of BJJ schools only focus on sport BJJ and mostly teach techniques that’ll never work in a real fight. Also, you’ll never learn real takedowns, basic strikes and strike defense. ADCC rules used to cater to BJJ athletes (don’t know about now). Sport Sambo has a rule set while Combat Sambo is a military style that’s designed for real life combat. If Fedor didn’t change your perception on the usefulness of Combat Sambo then by this time Khabib should’ve opened your eyes….

I think a wrestling-oriented (takedowns and top control) style of BJJ is best for MMA. Your first priority when you end up on your back should be standing up, second should be getting a sweep, and third should be getting a submission. Too many BJJ practitioners have the opposite mindset and prefer to try to submit people from their guard, but that leaves you susceptible to ground and pound in the time it takes you to set up a submission.

A lot of BJJ schools don't teach leg/foot locks to white and maybe blue belts because of the risk of really damaging guys because of the precision needed to successfully do leg/foot locks. I trained at the original Gracie Academy in Torrance for two years and Rener and Ryron were our instructors. Yes, we trained for self defense in the "streets." Also, you are correct, they teach the perfection of the fundamental aspects of JJ and Rener was awesome at explaining this. None of this fancy 10th Planet north monkey triangle moves or whatever. Glad to see a video that is accurate about the Gracies.

How many BJJ guys enter Judo competitions and win? Rule sets dictate how someone competes and ultimately dictates how people train if their main focus is competing. If Naga gave a throw suddenly 4 or 5 points, I bet you’d see way more Judo guys win. If you let guys get elbowed in the back of the head in MMA Khabids tactics would’ve have worked as well. Great 👍🏼 discussion. Maybe I don’t know enough yet, I’m a blue belt under Royce’s line, but my instructor seems very open- minded and always entertains moves I saw in some video. Renzo’s plastic bag choke is awesome, I suppose a modified Ezekiel but it seems all the new moves are modifications of the core techniques.

Thank you so much for your perspective. I’m only a blue belt and I have no interest in all the new bear n bolo and other techniques. I like Rickson, Kron, Ralph, and Rener Gracie style of simplicity and training fewer techniques and reacher and elite level with them. But like you said it depends on your use for jiujitsu as I’m more focused on self defense and even once I start competing I will still stick to the basics.

@frederickmorton275
@frederickmorton275 2 жыл бұрын
@@JoeyCentral sambo and judo both have very long learning curve. in my opinion judo and sambo as opposed to wrestling(which takes a bit less time to grasp the basics) are pretty much jiu jitsu standing up-what I mean by that is that you are trying to throw/takedown another person with maximum leverage and mi imum strenght so timing and position has to be right and there are usually split seconds windows of opportunity to throw someone and if you miss it it's gone. and you have to create that opportunity first to begin with which required solid grip fighting and setting up in order to even get into right position not to mention that you still have to set it up and fool your opponent usually with something else prior to executing actual throw. so it's just a anture if standup grappling which is more explosive than ground grappling. although in judo and sambo due to the ruleset even ground aspect is explosive as there is time limit so your whole ground game consists of attacking the turtle to fast turnover to pin and submit. so in summary pace is different due to nature of standup grappling and also due to time limit for ground attacks and the whole ruleset which promotes activity and issues penalties for inactiviy

Sambo training is much much tougher and more oriented towards self defense. Wrestling raining is also much tougher...it is brutal. Tou start at 8 and are competing in tough high school programs and competing for college scholarships. You can't run a BJJ school that way. You can't do that in an art that focuses on accountants w/ 9 to 5 jobs. Sport BJJ, while technically evolved, has lost much of its self defense aspect. MMA is dominated by wrestlers, that should tell you something. You have to respect BJJ to beat BJJ. Now Renzo is a different animal. I got a blue from Renzo, and all his guys can fight In a relationship street fight. Renzo encourages you to wrestle, box, train MT. This guy, Zahabi makes good points.

Feodor did practice Judo and was quite good at it, but you notice it was Sambo he excelled at and always emphasized. And with regards to Valentina and Hector, they are both famous as strikers. So yes, they trained in Judo, but it didn't have enough of an affect of what you would consider they're fighting styles. Besides, Hector Lombard was never a champion in a major organization (Bellator at that time cannot be called a major organization). That being said, I love Judo. As far as a real fight goes, I think someone whose only done Sambo would be better off then someone whose only done BJJ. And I don't think that's up for debate. I think it's a pretty solidified fact for obvious reasons. BJJ is a little too specialized. And even when it comes to the philosophy of the two styles, sambo comes out on top. In Sambo, both sport and combat, they want to take their opponent down and submit them as fast as possible. Which I think is inherently more realistic. While in BJJ, there isn't an incentive to submit your opponent fast. I think you can argue that BJJ is more technical in certain ways though, because it's more about getting dominant positions and maintaining them.

Good evening Mr Zahabi and greetings from Indonesia, first I would like to introduce myself, my name is stellar and I am a blue belt. In the near future I'm planning to teach bjj at my home city with the assistance of a friend who's a muay thai coach. Mind you that we only have a handful of blackbelts and it is common for a bluebelt to teach bjj especially in cities outside java and bali. I have several questions in regards to teaching and curriculum. 1. Since I'll be focusing a great deal on the basics, how much repetitions do you advise for white belts to do before engaging them in sparring? And how many techniques and repetitions for each technique should the students do daily? 2. In terms of technique, when should i change the techniques that i'll be teaching? Should i teach the same technique and drill it for an entire week/ month? Or should I have different sets of technique to teach for each session or should i combine both? Again any reply is appreciated, and thank you.

Has a BJJ guys enter any of Sambo tournamnets and won? Has a BJJ guys enter any Sambo competitions? According to some sources Rickson entered and he lost, isn't it? I like your videos, but your argument here is a bit weak. As for functionality and martiallness, Fedor, Khabib, Khamzat, etc. are enough for empirical evidence. Death squad recently looks like "dead" squad, sorry for being frank.

"Don't fear the guy that knows 10,000 different kicks fear the guy that practiced 1 kick 10,000 times" -Bruce Lee It seems principles in martial arts are universal as the Gracie family would most likely agree with that statement from the way they work the fundamentals

I think still you have 2 kind of grappling one is standing and one in the ground. Usually the discusion is about what you should focus more.... Some people think bjj is best but if you train 100% newaza only bjj you are not close to be a all round grappler.

@vittocrazi

id say anything with good standup and free practice (sparring) should put you in good spot. may it be grappling or striking. but as the previous comments say, krav maga is all abut self defense, so its probably the best suit for you, and combat sambo is pretty much MMA with clothings and more agressive ruleset, so its shoud be more realistic than most other combat sports (yes, mma is super effective, but tactics for lasting several long rounds are different than winning a short fight).

Sambo is heavy wrestling. Sambo is predominantly not in ibjjf. Leg locks are apart or sambo and they are much faster and smoother as they are from takedowns. Jiu jitsu guys DO NOT wrestle. I have not been to one school where bjj students wrestle. I went to high school and wrestled harder and with higher skill than in bjj classes.
