In this episode I narrate a video I posted months ago rolling with Johnny Yates a decorated Greco-Roman wrestlers. This video is meant to highlight some of the interesting exchanges that occur between these two different grappling arts. Special thanks to Johnny for rolling with me and allowing me to film it even though this is bjj is not the discipline he is trained in.

@@markwhite4348 Bullshit. I'll call it right there. A bjj guy cannot shoot as well as a wrestler. That's illogical af? I will admit both are important bjj does have it's place. My preference is sweeps (pendulum being my fav.) The guard work and subs of bjj is my focus. That is true. Bjj is foreign to wrestling. Why can I not compare two sports/arts? While it's true in no gi bjj there is some wrestling. I didn't see any in Gi style Gracie barra when I trained. I train but more for mma so in a way you are right. I do not train true sport gi bjj. No gi is my focus. I still respect jacket wrestling though (judo is scary shit)

I feel like this comment needs to be read before people comment themselves, so please take a moment before you write your angry response to Zahabi. Sparring (rolling) is not fighting. This is not a match. There is not a winner. This doesn't go into a record. Rolling is not meaningfully different than hitting a punching bag or drilling a takedown. When you hit the punching bag, the bag does not "lose." You do not "win." They are merely training tools to help you get better. The video is not of a fight. It's friendly sparring so Zahabi can continue to polish his skills against wrestlers, and so Johnny can (presumably) develop submission defense and expand his grappling skills. The only objective is to learn. If you join a BJJ school, you will roll like this between 2 and 5 times per day. Your opponents may have wrestling or judo backgrounds. They may be much bigger or much smaller. They may be male or female. When you are in BJJ, this kind of encounter isn't a challenge fight, it's just another day at the office. It's totally ordinary and unremarkable. We don't derive from it profound meaning as to the power of BJJ or of our own skills.

A lot of unanswered questions here. First, what exactly was the objective/goal for each individual? Was submission the goal? If that’s the case obviously the submission grappler will always have the advantage. Second, BJJ vs Wrestling is a little misleading. Firas is competent in wrestling. I may be mistaken but Johnny Yates doesn’t seem to have knowledge of jiu jitsu. So many of these Jiu Jitsu vs Wrestling/Judo arguments seem flawed because they’re always posed within the context of jiu jitsu rules. In my opinion wrestling is a more sound martial art because it teaches you how to grapple/initiate while standing i.e. hand fight, close distance, tie up, clinch, take the opponent down and then use a variety of techniques to control on the ground. Jiu Jitsu is an amazing art but these skills are lacking or not trained with enough frequency. Hence why it’s easier to go from wrestling to jiu jitsu then the other way around. Just my opinion though.

I don't think the point is to argue for the superiority of either style but rather to focus on the specific exchanges happening between high level grapplers
@boywonder4509
@boywonder4509 5 жыл бұрын
@@PBrrtrn What's the point of focusing on the details of specific exchanges? I'm assuming to evaluate the effectiveness of each art and/or technique in relation to the other. But it's difficult to make an accurate evaluation without context. I'll definitely admit I have a bias towards wrestling but I watch these videos and it's seems there's a hidden bias towards jiu jitsu. Maybe I'm wrong but either way context is important. Someone could put out a video of high level NCAA wrestler rag dolling a jiu jitsu blackbelt giving details and I'd be equally skeptical. What was the context of the situation? Was the blackbelt able to use submissions? Did he train takedowns throughout his years of training? Etc...
@heymelon
@heymelon 5 жыл бұрын
@@boywonder4509 I'm pretty sure he gave some context. Also he said in the video something like "this guy has thrown me on the mats loads of times, but now we are in my world". So I assume they have done pure takedown or wrestling sparring as well. But firas is a bjj guy at heart that is also well versed in wrestling, so maybe this is the video he feels he best can narrate. It is very interesting to me to me personally at least to see what bjj moves works well against a high level wrestler that doesn't know bjj. Not sure why this is an issue worth complaining about really, this is not a click bait channel trying to disprove the effectiveness of any martial art.
@PBrrtrn
@PBrrtrn 5 жыл бұрын
@@boywonder4509 I personally see a lot of value in these videos because I'm the only one who wrestled at my Jiu Jitsu academy, and I only did so in high school. There's exchanges like the granby roll to heelhook that you normally wouldn't see at your average training session because not everyday you see an olympian candidate rolling with a high level black belt. I would actually be verry interested in watching the same sparring happen without submission, i.e. focusing only on sweeps, takedowns and passes and seeing in what sort of positions the wrestler has the most advantage, as I don't get to try that sort of thing very often.
@cameronjukes9962
@cameronjukes9962 5 жыл бұрын
@@boywonder4509 The goal of their roll was whatever either wanted, but obviously submissions were allowed. Firass has said many times that he thinks the divisions between grappling sports aren't particularly useful/important and that good grappling is good grappling. BJJ practitioners should be training stand up as well. Also you might think wrestling to be superior, but in this instance, with more realistic rules than an NCAA wrestling match, the wrestler got caught in a lot of submissions. Being good at standup is great, but limited if once you take your opponent to the ground they can blow your knee out.

Where I have had trouble is going against superior wrestlers - those guys that wrestled since age 5 lol. Leg locks is where I have had some success. My school also really only started focusing strongly on leg locks about a year ago. So even at brown belt, I still have a long way to improve my leg lock game.

I think it's just that it's spelled differently than it sounds (in English, anyway). What you're looking for is the de la Riva and reverse de la Riva guards. In BJJ schools, these are usually just shortened to DLR and RDLR guards, so that's what it means if you hear the acronym. Anyway, DLR and RDLR are frequently used when the BJJer is on his back and his opponent is standing. It's a guard that, at it's most basic level, traps a single leg of the opponent (although the other leg comes into play for sweeps and so on). They're often considered to be sone of the most frustrating guards in BJJ.

@elenchus

depends on how good the wrestler is. remember that in BJJ "sparring" (rolling) there aren't any weight classes or age groups etc. You will frequently face guys that outweigh you by 50 or 100 lbs, so not only do you have to be really good at jiujitsu, but your wrestling opponent might be much larger. But a 140 lb purple belt is still a purple belt. Not saying that's what happened, but it's something to remember when we don't know the context.

What's the point to do bjj with a wrestler. Or you do grappling nogi or you limit him so much. Bjj has the advantage because it doesn't care about been on the floor or been on their back. Disavantage

I’m a folkstyle wrestler, and recently rolled with a purple belt and brown belts. I notice in our exchanges there are certain chains of movements that bjj guys are more comfortable with. Base disruption seems to be a concept that is preached in their techniques, and the feel is very very different from that of another wrestler. How many years of wrestling do you think equates to that of a purple belt? Or maybe what level wrestler equates to each belt ? I’m 20yrs old and plan to walk on a college team or strat training catch as catch can. It’d be awesome for you to watch a quick roll and maybe give a tip on how to handle sweeps as a smaller (135-140lbs)wrestler? kzbin.info/www/bejne/poDNhKKor7iUqdE Thanks!!!

@@kallepikku4991 most of what you said here is simply not true 5 years of wrestling + 1 year of submissions = bjj black belt? is this seriously what you think bjj is? more like: 1000s of hours of guard, passing, submissions/breaking mechanics, scrambles, sweeps, etc and none of danaher's top students are/were decorated wrestlers.. garry wrestled young, but nothing crazy.. gordon i don't think wrestled at all, nor nicky.. don't think eddie did either, or most of the up and comers on the pro scene.. the point you are missing is THE top BJJ (and MMA) SCHOOLS THEMSELVES train a ton of wrestling/stand-up.. and not only that, they will bring in world class wrestlers/judokas to train with.. sometimes pure wrestling, sometimes with submissions that affect takedowns (kimura, guillotine, etc), sometimes within a bjj roll, etc, etc this isn't to say that a super good wrestler will not run through "your average" bjjer.. but at the highest levels? or even a blue or purple that trains a ton and competes?

How much BJJ training do you think it would take for someone like Yates to avoid being submitted? How about to start submitting decent people (purple belts, say)?
@charlesbell5500
@charlesbell5500 5 жыл бұрын
The obvious answer is that it would take him a long time of BJJ training to be able to beat purple belts, but I'm gonna answer this a different way. I believe that if a wrestler wants to be good in BJJ, they have to narrow down their arsenal. They need a few solid submissions and a great strategy. He's almost always going to have the strength advantage over his opponents so he will need to find ways to fight those types of battles. He really needs to nail his wrestler's pass (double over pass), and he needs to perfect his d'arce, rear naked choke and a key lock of some sort. I find those are the 3 most effective submission for wrestlers (rear naked choke is a staple, no one could go without it but wrestlers have amazing d'arces and their strength allows them to snatch kimuras more easily). And he would obviously need to come up with an entire leg lock defence system that he must drill endlessly. I think if a guy like Johnny perfects his passes, is proficient at RNCs/d'arces/kimuras, has strategies to bait his opponents into playing a strength game and has a great leg lock defence system, I think he would do very well in BJJ. He won't need to learn stuff like how to maintain mount, how to spin for armbars, stuff like that because let's be honest, that takes years to learn, we're talking about a guy who has a specific skillset, what he would need to do to be good at BJJ in the shortest amount of time possible. I think what I laid out would take him about 2 years in my opinion.
@elenchus
@elenchus 5 жыл бұрын
honestly, not that much. I think if he really threw himself into it for 3 years with a good coach he could develop vedecent submission defense and some guard passing/survival. Remember, in MMA, you don't have to win on the ground. MMA rewards stalling on the ground, so you just need to freeze up the match for a little while and you'll get stood up, or conversely, just survive until the round ends. Of course, that assumes an MMA context, not like Metamoris or something.
