Love or hate him, Gordon Ryan never plays dirty and is truly an artist of the "Gentle Art." So many times, his opponents are slapping him, using brute force or dirty tactics, but he never does, because he doesn't need to. He trains and thinks and is constantly learning and it translates into a calm, focused, tactical game, that he wins. Much respect.

I tapped during rolling because of an old shoulder injury but my training partner didn't stop for the reason that he felt he hadn't applied a submission. The reason that heavy sparring isn't considered assault is because consent is given by both parties. It is a consenting activity in a controlled environment with built-in safe guards like the tap, mat rules, mat etiquette etc...IMO when that consent is withdrawn by one of the parties and the other party knowingly continues fighting you start getting into dangerous territory where what you are doing could be considered assault in a court of law. If your partner taps you stop no ifs no buts.

Not sure what Downey's strategy was but he was using a lot of energy. You can hear him breathing quite heavily in the first 4 minutes. I think he put on a good show. Played aggressively on the feet and got some takedowns without over committing to the ground game. He looked better than Bo Nickal's match with Ryan. I would like to see matches that are no more than 10 minutes. This would force Ryan to get the fight to the ground and showcase his submissions. Otherwise we see a lot of stand-up grappling with very little takedowns. Imagine a wrestler at Downey's level knowing more jiu-jitsu and subs. Just look at Nick Rodriguez, he's a beast and his level of wrestling is nowhere near Downey's. And he's only been at sub grappling for 2 years or so.

I have a very basic understanding of Bjj. Wrestled in high school. I saw the wrestling match between these two and downy absolutely dominated. My question is, Why isn’t that the style he imposed in the bjj match to gain advantageous positioning? Can someone tell me what I’m missing. In the wrestling match he had multiple positions that would be considered dominant in bjj. Why not take that approach in the bjj match.
@TheLZempir33 жыл бұрын
Because if you push someone out of bounds in bjj they restart you in the middle. No points for that.
@theasianviper63653 жыл бұрын
The main reason is that a takedown is not the goal of bjj, submission is. So if you're really good with takedowns, your opponents will just pull guard or butt scoot so all the energy you put into your takedowns is useless. Second is that wrestling is completely focused on takedowns, takedown defense and pins. That means that whoever will practice wrestling will have better takedowns and takdown defense because they put more time in it. That being said, I do think that bjj has to spend more time in takedowns as it's the way to get a fight to the ground.
@TheSantos1733 жыл бұрын
@Adam Khan dude, I do BJJ and committed to it for life, but he asked a good question tho. If you think about if you give your back to a wrestler in the real world 8/10 times it’ll probably not be in the grass. Of course BJJ has finishes which is awesome but both have their pros and cons. It all comes down to who is fighting anyways. Supplement your grappling with some striking and you’re better
@smarterthanyou22553 жыл бұрын
Because being able to move somebody outside of some lines isn't actually doing anything if points aren't awarded for it. It requires a ton of energy and does literally nothing for you in bjj.

The difference is, Gordon met Pat in the middle and was willing to exchange during the wrestling bout, and he lost (Gordon himself admitted beforehand that would almost certainly be the outcome). Pat played things as safe as he could during the grappling match and initiated nothing, and he ultimately tapped while in a power half Nelson. Levi Shepard no he’s not “literally” an Olympian. In fact, he hadn’t actually made the Olympic team yet. I would concede he’s an Olympic LEVEL wrestler but he’s not “literally” an Olympian. Levi Shepard the fact is he got tired and took the easy way out to avoid getting choked. It’s a pretty shameful thing to do. Gordon went out and took his beating in wrestling rules like a man, he didn’t fake an injury to save face. Pat Downey got tired, gave up, fakes an injury ( which was magically healed 5 minutes later when it was time to do the wrestling). On top of that, Gordon actually elected to stand and wrestle with him in the No gi grappling rules ( his strength) instead of sitting to guard and immediately leg locking him. Like honestly, even if Downey would get sick takedowns, once theyre down Gordon takes total control. THe only way Downey cant be submitted is by not touching Gordon, which is kind of what grappling is all about. Do people still believe Wrestling is better than Jiu-Jitsu? It can be, and wrestling has things that Jiu-Jitsu could learn from, but as a general note, you cant argue the fact Jiu-Jitsu is a more complete form of grappling.

Watch their wrestling match and imagine if the floor was concrete. And to make this clear, Gordon is the nogi absolute number one in the world no questions about it, but Pat Downey is not even close to being wrestlings number 1 guy. Compared to Sadulaev which is similar to Gordons Size, Pat Downey is a fkn little shitkid, but even Pat Downey is way stronger than the best nogi guy, now imagine Sadulaev. Wrestlers are always way stronger and they adapt to mma much quicker than regular jj guys because of their specimen physiques. The best fighters are usually wrestlers, and there will be a takeover in mma from freestyle wrestlers, it's alrdy happening. The russians will eat the bjj bois.

Wrestling isn't better than jiu-jitsu when there fighting to the submission. But if there fighting in mma, or folk style Wrestling or free style Wrestling format than Wrestling is obviously superior. The better wrestler can avoid being taken down and controlled, get takedowns when he needs, and if he is also the better striker than he will completely dominate. Most of jiu-jitsu is stalling and winning by criteria, Gordon Ryan is the exception with haveing extremely good submissions similar to a ko punch or a pin.

Pats knee looked like it was being bent when he tapped. Gordon had his shin across pats knee and was cranking his weight forward putting a lot of it on the knee. May have been a reason for him tapping. Idk

So can anybody brown belt or higher share if my theory of staying low with legs far back as in ready to sprawl being a good defense for leg locks imanari rolls etc. Cause im new in Bjj and im focusing on escapes and being sharp with 3 of my best subs BUT i know leg attacks will be coming someday and would like to know if my theory of hang low and ready to get the legs away is a better strat then like in this vid being too upright making legs vulnerable?
@Alex-xi3bw3 жыл бұрын
I'm a brown belt lol. Staying low makes it harder for your opponent to attack your legs, but easier to jump on your head with a front head lock, which can lead to guillotines, darce chokes, back takes, etc. There's no right or wrong way to stand, there's pros and cons to everything.
@smarterthanyou22553 жыл бұрын
Gotta learn the leg lock game broski. When you learn attacks you're also somewhat learning how to defend because you know each step you're trying to prevent. And like he^ said there are pros and cons to weigh out when it comes to stance and approach

Can someone explain why it seemed like Gordan Ryan was kind of mad that he got the win with a power half nelson? He seemed like he was upset?
@McLovin8103 жыл бұрын
Gordon basically wanted to prove to himself and everyone who doubted him before the match that he could win under the rule set. He basically played at 20% intensity to tire his opponent out and then win with a legitimate submission at the end but his opponent didn’t let him lock up a submission and tapped to a power half nelson which is not even a submission, rather a common wrestling move.
