@AnonYmous-ry2jn
@AnonYmous-ry2jn 2 ай бұрын
@@taketheredpill1452 maybe more grace and finesse, less about raw speed and power? The tennis ball shoots across the court like a bullet now, with gladiator muscle behind it. The greats have incredible skill nowadays, but the game has a different look from the 60’s and 70’s and 80’s. I’m not sure which era I find the most enjoyable to watch, but the sport definitely seems so different.

@@AnonYmous-ry2jn - Yes, it was magic. The power game devolves into giants slamming rockets from the baseline. Wood racquets meant that normal sized people (Borg, McEnroe) were the best suited. Serve and volley was a thing, there probably isn't a single serve and volley specialist in the top 50 now. Graphite racquets ruined the game in less than 10 years...

I'm pretty sure Borg hit a lot of top spin in his ground strokes and used the kick serve a lot. Most importantly he didn't really try to shorten points very much. He would run his opponents into exhaustion, frustration and submission. Always calm, cool - the thing is a player must adapt to the equipment (racquet) rather than the other way around. Probably Borgs best weapon was his physical and mental stamina. One thing Federer has in common with Borg is that he wastes little or no energy - no court histrionics, no reaction or distraction by the opponents behaviors...stays focused and executes his plan perfectly.

That was fun to watch. Borg is one of my all time favorites. .Back in '75 - '76 when I was a fairly decent recreational player, I tried the Donnay, the Wilson Kramer, and the Dunlop Maxply among several others, and wound up liking the Davis racket (I forget which model). The Davis racket was very flexible, very whippy, which suited my hard flat ball striking style. They used to break at the neck a lot though. Anyway, cool video. Brought back some good memories. I agree that Borg would have won a few more majors if he hadn't retired so young.

You didn’t have the shoulder length hair which would have given you more power. Two other factors in the wooden racquet that Borg used was the high string tension and the racquet weight. If I remember correctly he strung them at 70# and used a 14-15 once racquet. Back in the days of wood racquets one of my hitting partners got one of Borg’s used frames from a Donnay sales rep. We got to hit with it and it weighed a ton.

Thanks for the great video. Imho, your rallies here are more exciting than most modern professional matches. You can see how hard you guys are trying and how you are getting rewarded for excellent shot selection rather than relying on modern equipment to do the job for you. You have to work extra hard to be successful. And that's what all tennis should be about. The Donnay Allwood was not a simple wooden racquet. The racquet frame comprised layers of maple, beech, ash and a vulcanised fibre. Vulcanised fibre is a synthetic material made of cellulose. And the racquets that Bjorn Borg used were reinforced with fibreglass shims so that his racquets could withstand the force he generated when hitting tennis balls. Also the Wilson T2000 does not have an aluminium frame. It has a chromium plated tubular steel frame. If it had been made of aluminium it would have bent or snapped very easily given the way it was constructed. As for Bjorn Borg, he was unlikely to win 20 Major Titles. He only competed in one Australian Open and lost four US Open Finals. He finished with 11 Major Titles. Even if he had played and won 5 Australian Open Titles and a couple of US Open Titles, he would have had 18 Major Titles at the point of his first retirement from the sport in the middle of 1981. Could he have won another two after that. Well given the rapid rise of players like McEnroe, Lendl and Wilander it's hard to see where he would have found another two to get to twenty. And that assumes he would have won 5 Australian Opens which would have been a big ask in itself. Still we should remember and celebrate Borg's tennis achievements with his Donnay racquets. He came along at a time when tennis needed "saving". He was the first Tennis Rock Star and he basically made the sport popular again with younger generations. His name was well known even outside of tennis circles. He was the prototype for the modern tennis player. And the sport of tennis is forever in his debt for what he did for it.

I am a keen fan of Bjorn Borg and I am in possession of four Donnay Borg Pro new frames, never strung, just bought in 1990s and stacked away ever since. I have to say that your backhand is typical of moder racket tennis, straight and rigid left arm and little wrist action, since the ball return of today's rackets is excellent. If you look at Borg's backhand, he used to immediately bring the head of his racket down below his knees and back, and then lift it and loop it to the ball with a wrist whipping motion, ending with the racket's head above his left shoulder. He still used this method when he made his comeback but he could not get any power out of his new synthetic Donney racket. Later he modified his style, allowing him to play exhibition matches in the veteran circuit. No way you could control your backhand shots using a wooden frame racket like a synthetic one.

I agree, Borg was the greatest of his era. Plus, I credit Borg with the modern style of tennis, with extreme topspin groundstrokes. He was the first major player using extreme topspin groundstrokes. Many experts of the time and teaching pros were still teaching flat groundstrokes and serve/ volley games. Most people falsely believed hitting the ball like Borg would cause damage to the shoulders. Most professionals play like Borg now. Plus, he was the last number one player to use a small wood racquet.

I have been fantasizing about directing a wood racquet tourney for years. I think it could show who the best tennis players really are. Our local tennis club refused to hold a wood tourney due to liability reasons; silly reason, IMHO. About the clothing, I find much of the modern styles tend to cling and hang on a sweaty torso, which is quite annoying especially while serving. Also, shorts are too big and baggy and will also cling. Many articles of clothing do not have seams that are finished off with bar tacks, so the stitching may prematurely start to unravel. Incidentally, Borg was actually VERY good at net! He knew when to finish there and acted appropriately upon this knowledge.

Borg is also a great athlete. He's extremely fast. So on clay, he was playing with top spin and very high net clearance and wore his opponents down. Borg said that he wanted his opponents to know that they would have to be prepared to hit a 100 shots when they faced him. So obviously this racquet can't be used to play the modern attacking game. I think if you have a player that hits with lots of top spin, can last, and fast, he could still give Milan a run for his money.

100%, I think only Borg would have the foot speed, athleticism and physical strength from that era to challenge Nadal, Federer and Djokovic if he had been born in the modern ers.

Yes, but Borg wasn't just a human backboard like Harold Solomon, he also played angles and hit passing shots.

@@hd-xc2lz I didn't say he's a back board. The game now is more aggressive, but back then with the wood racquets, it could be a slug fest. Watch Borg and Lendl.

Reminds me of that time when Borg attempted a comeback in the early 90's. He pretty much came on court with everything he used from the 70s and early 80s---attire, hair, wooden racquet and all. It was so weird. I also found it odd he was traveling with some really old guy he called "the professor". The professor would spectate Borg with these tiny opera binoculars.

Man Milan is killing it he was not even out playing u just hustled his but off lol. Great video. Awesome throw back racket. Nick u look like your getting a little bit lazy. No disrespect just an honest observation. Was it just because u had an old racket and new u couldn't return the shot or conserving energy for next match. I'm a little older but I usually out hustle my openents because I lack technical skill or training but is saving energy a viable strategy in long matches. Or is all out play to win every point a better way to go. Anyways great videos like always.

You play pretty well with the wood, though you aren't reproducing conditions perfectly. You are using a comfortable modern synthetic grip AND it sounds from the pitch that you strung the racket fairly loose. This plays much easier. Remember, typically woods were strung between 55-65 lbs with gut or nylon, but Borg strung his Frame at more than 80 lbs. To truly experience the 1970's, you'll need to use leather grip, string tight, and enjoy some tennis elbow and blood blisters. Lol.

Me and my brother used to play with those rackets back when Borg was champ. I found them a bit springy like a trampoline effect to them compared to the graphite rackets. Guess all wood rackets were in some ways. But the Donnays had better control.

Can you do a video on white vs yellow tennis balls? I played with white recently and it’s quite a different experience - they look tiny in comparison!

btw, Donnay produces a racquet they call "Allwood" but it is a modern racquet painted and is about 102 sq in. A lot easier to use than the original allwood :)

I've still got a Borg pro model, that feels like a sledgehammer when I pick it up. it's strung with 15 gauge gut and in good condition( most of the poor ones are a matter of being stored in the garage without a press). btw- Borg could routinely hit 120 mph serves with that racquet- that went in.

Would be interesting to hear from Milan about the difference of the ball you hit. Is it less heavy? Less powerful/penetrating etc.

I actually have two of these I take out from time to time. I love the adjustment you made to your backhand but wondering why you didn't use more slice. I think you should give it another go. Figure out how to keep your serves in, throw in some more slice approach shots (forehand and backhand), follow your drop shots and come to net more to finish the points. Milan gave you plenty of balls you could have come in on but you seemed hesitant. Seemed like you were trying to play a more modern game with a classic racket. I think what's fun about playing with a vintage racket is that it makes you slow down your strokes and construct points differently.

Almost all the wooden rackets from the 70's and the 80's were made so that they became whippy, or too flexible after a short time of use. Most of the rackets that were made in the 1950's and 60's were far superior in quality.
