I started playing with one of those when I was a teenager in the 70s and it was a game changer for its time with natural gut strings and you could string it very tight.

I used to own one. Wish I still had it. A shop called The Surprise Store sold those. That store was a sporting goods and clothing store.

I wonder if you found this in a shed from Scott Valley tennis club. I gave it to their tennis pro, a few years ago. It was restrung in the 1990’s. It came with the non original Donnay cover and travelled with me from Europe, Belgium, Germany, UK, Hong Kong and then Marin. If it is the same racket, the grip was some red almost hospital gauze when I handed it over. If it is the same racket, glad you got to play with it.

I appreciate that coach Rob tried to emulate Borg BH. Well done! 🙂

Look at that old school rice cooker. We had one of those for years since I was a kid. We went modern about 10 years ago with a fancy Japanese new model.

Reportedly, Borg's racquets had an extra layer of wood in the head to reinforce the frame because Borg strung his racquets VERY tight, like 70-80 lbs. with natural gut. Also, Borg's later racquets were not the AllWood model but a later one that was stiffer and had a head that was all black in color.

Pure savagery, but during the time the game was played. Serve and volley was king and control racquets mattered more than pure power.

Same thing with John McEnroe's Dunlop Maxply supposedly. When the later Maxply Mcenroe came out it was definitely stiffer than a regular Maxply. Prior to the Dunlop John used a Kramer pro staff which was quite a bit different than the Dunlop Maxply.

I remember trying that racquet back in the day. I was shocked at how soft it was. The sweet spot was tiny. It was difficult to play with. What Borg did with that racquet is nothing short of amazing. I do think the racquet was a bit hard to find in the US. Maybe that had something to do with the fact that Borg played with a Bancroft frame here for most of his career.

I played with a polish wooden racket from thr 70s - some pro level model. It had pretty fresh natural gut on it. DAMN! it played like butter. A bit heavy but you can do flat shots, volleys and epic backhands with it. Slices work amazing also!

I absutely love playing with this racket. My doubles partner and I are 2-0 against modern rackets when we use our woodies. There's a higher level of focus and concentration when playing with them, not to mention there's no room for any lack of effort.

No, we had these racquets everywhere in Canada. My brother played with these and he had 2 of them. We bought a lot of our tennis gear in Detroit because we lived in Windsor, which is in the border with Detroit

That was my prized possession growing up. Live in Germany then, and they were popular.

You should be able to find a Borg Pro out there. That may be heavier to Borg's spec?

Oh, my old Jr High racquet! Paper route paid for that one - mail ordered COD. Can't believe I didn't keep mine...

Bit before my time but didn't Borg use Donny everwhere else and Bancroft in USA. Perhaps why not many in US. Believe this happened a bit around this time.

I've only seen one Donnay in person used by someone I played against. I never saw them in shops over here. Just the usual Wilsons, Bancroft, Heads, Davis, Spaulding. I did hit with a player with a Garcia which basically was a clone of the JK Auto. I thought that you guys hit fine with the frames. Bancroft made a Borg model before Allwood did.

Bancroft made it at the same time. Borg had separate contracts for North America and the rest of the World. He did the same with shoes Tretorns in some places Diadora in others. I have both a Donnay Allwood and a Bancroft Borg Pro in my collection I do not have the Donnay Borg Pro black racquet with strobe striping.

Not his shop. He was a manager there, but no longer. He’s never addressed why on the channel.
