It's so heartwarming seeing HEMA fans all the way in China!

The class looked very cool but I'm fascinated by the language exchange. It was almost like the old masters. Speak in your mother tongue to your partner (German), speak to the crowd in the common tongue (English but Greek or Latin during Renaissance) and the local translator converting to Mandarin and/or Shanghainese.
@turnipsociety7068 ай бұрын
Greek would not have been a "common tongue" in the Renaissance. Latin was used by the clerics. French would have been an international language, and German as well, with a continuum of dialects for both

Very cool. I lived in Shanghai for a year almost 2 decades ago and it was a great (but very hot/humid) place. I couldn't help but smile as I recognized views of Jing'An Temple, Suzhou boats, and just the metro doors.

Great to have had you in SH! Many fans were finally able to meet the person whose videos they trained and referenced to for years :D

It is interesting to think that they probably think of HEMA more like we would think of Kung fu swordsmanship, with the kind of added mistique of being foreign and culturally distinct
@niklasfischer3915 Жыл бұрын
I would doubt that...in my experience Asian martial arts most often have a certain level of arrogance and elitism impragnated into it. Especially in case of Japanese swordsmanship...not so sure about Chinese tho. They will certainly have found it interesting, yet probably approached it as some western barbarian explaining their crude fencing systems. That's however just me and my prejudice, lol.
@IExistSometimes Жыл бұрын
That's at odds with how Bjorn described his hosts, and it's not like European martial arts are without their elitism, which I imagine would be much worse if they were a fully continuous set of traditions instead of a modern scrapping together of largely historians and massive nerds.
@niklasfischer3915 Жыл бұрын
@@IExistSometimes Well, there is a difference between being polite and interested and what people actually think but won't speak out openly. But as I wrote that is just my prejudice...its not unlikely that reality is entirely different. Also one might expect that only people participate in such a workshop who are genuinely interested in European Martial arts, and those more "elitist" fencers I mentioned (while perhaps being in the majority) were not attending this course, leading to the positive impression of Björn.
@RealZeratul Жыл бұрын
@@niklasfischer3915No doubt that there are arrogant people, coaches, and by extension schools everywhere, but I doubt that it's that common (being a kung fu instructor in Germany). That being said, Hollywood didn't really do HEMA justice, so common people may very well think of European sword techniques as crude compared to the (also unrealistic) wushu stuff they know from TV.

7:40 what is that move... i know it's from a Meyer play but I can't find it since first learning it. I've always just called it "the hand-switchy thingy" but that is not what Meyer calls it lol Anyway, great video Bjorn. entertaining and informative as always, the workshop looked brilliant!

I was watching videos of the workshop from their perspective on Chinese video platforms. Did you know that apparently the Chinese HEMA community collectively nicknames you "Giant Arms Bro"?

Man, this looks like it would have been incredible to experience. As an aside, what is the term for the continuous looping cuts used in greatsword techniques? It's been driving me up the wall for days, and I'd appreciate if you could enlighten me.
Жыл бұрын
What did you mean with looping cuts? Can you share a timestamp or something :)
@The_Industry Жыл бұрын
@ sorry, not present in this video, I commented here because of the workshop, and I thought it would be more likely to get noticed on a newer video. The looping cuts I mean are best displayed when the practitioner is standing in place, making continuous circular or figure-eight strikes whilst pivoting on the spot every so often, allowing them to offend all angles from a single position. Edit: It is demonstrated at several points in Lindybeige's video on the Spadone as well.

14:54 its a difference in brains, holostic brains pull others down in the believe if others are worse than them then they win. logical brains look at the advantages in optimizing others even at the expense of ourself: saying "if they are better our survival and efficientcy is higher, so we share to maximize alls efficiency. sadly the VAST (like 90%+) of the world population are controlled by holistic brains; which is why the world is so greedy and shit
