Not really. After adopting Buddhism, Ashoka had reacted violently to one painting by a main monk showing Buddha bowing to Mahavir. He declared that he would reward anyone a gold coin for every head of a jain monk beheaded. About 50,000 jain monks were beheaded in his kingdom. Remember this was after he adopted Buddhism.

Sanchi stupa was repaired by pushyamitra shunga , and bharut stupa was built by agnimitra . Ashoka did not kill people on the name of religion he saw the destruction and accepted Buddhism and went on path of ahimsa . India as a country did not exist before the British rule. The rulers who fought against the British were trying to save their own kingdoms and they were not fighting for India. Freedom fighters are the ones who fought against the British after India was unified and enslaved by the British. The real freedom fighters are people like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev,Rajguru, Chandra Sekhar Azad, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Uddam Singh, Subash chandra Bose etc. These freedom fighters were fighting for the whole country and not just for their own states.

I am neither Congress, BJP or any political party, and not belong to any religion. I am in favour of changing Hyderabad name to Golkonda, the fort built for protection in 13th century. Hyderabad was built much later as an overflow. Without Golkonda, there is no Hyderabad. Hyderabad population has grown up from 200,000 in 1948 under Nizam to 1.5 Crores today. Muslims not only forced Hindus converted into Islam, they also robbed their identity by changing their family names. Christians also did the same to Indians. They could have given a first name a religious name but changing Family name is a violation of religious practices. This is a welcome change to name their places with their local heroes.

I live in Hauz Khas and I see no merit in renaming places associated only with the people whose original names continue to date. Delhi in itself predates Muslim rule and so it is fair to have Indraprasth, Dilli, Dehli and Delhi all in use to reflect the city's super long and diverse history. But the concerned places within the city which the Delhi BJP wants to rename were setup by the Delhi Sultanate rulers and their history essentially begins with the Sultanate. So what will the BJP rename those places to? It is still justified to revert the names of places which were renamed during Muslim era to their pre-Islamic names. But how do you justify renaming places whose history begins with the Muslim era? Our contemporary languages, especially North Western Indian languages are heavily influenced by Islamic vocabulary. Our culture has seen significant influence. How will be undo all these things? In the current era of globalized world, we cannot remain isolated. Preserving one's culture has to come organically and cannot be enforced without compromising the overall well being of that society.
