This film unfortunately lacks the depth and originality that made Eggers' earlier work so compelling. It feels more like a formulaic modern horror movie than a bold, visionary piece. Here's hoping Eggers moves away from this trend of creating more mainstream, crowd-pleasing content and returns to Lighthouse-like films again.

@@BKCplaysPokemon Ended up watching Nosferatu. There were parts I enjoyed but overall there was a lot that dragged it down. The feeding being used as a sexual assault metaphor in the beginning (which already had the subtlety of a dynamic punch from Machamp) only for the director to throw all subtext out the window and for it to straight up be about sexual assault made me feel like the director was using cheap tactics to try and make the audience uncomfortable. Didn’t like a lot of choices in the movie, although I did like the atmosphere and fairy tale style at some points. Felt more like a mummy movie than a vampire movie though.

Second, he spammed Psychic Fangs on Pex when that was clearly doing no damage. At that point, it was better for him to fish for defense drops with Liquidation since Pex can't clear the drops by switching anymore. Hi BKC i watched Mulholland Drive (twice) and Perfect Blue after watching your movie recommendations. And after watching them I started wondering: what makes a movie enjoyable or 'good' for you personally? As a non-film-head, i don't regret watching either of them. I liked the unexpected twist of the final act in perfect blue because the movie was litttered with clues thinking back afterwards and it tells a completely different story after you know the end of it. Mulholland Drive was less enjoyable for me. I think part of that may be because i still don't fully understand it all (especially the Silencío portion) so i didn't have that same eurika moment like in perfect blue (even though the second viewing helped me comprehend it much better) but that's when i started wondering why everyone has such high praise for this movie. It was a fun ride (apart from the diner scene at the beginning because I'm a scaredy cat) in the same way that a rollercoaster is fun in the way it disorients you to the point where you don't really understand anything that's happening around you, and despite drowning you still find yourself wanting more. But i don't think that's the only reason it's held in such high regard which is why I'm rambling here to ask what about this film makes you feel so strongly about it? One extra thing - i did enjoy the acting of the lead in MD very much
@watsonwrote4 күн бұрын
With many forms of art that are less "mass consumable" or immediately gratifying, the enjoyableness comes from how they evoke previous experiences, from media or from life, and then recontextualize them or provide additional layers of feeling/understanding. Often when someone has a very strong response to an artwork and others don't, it's because of those circumstances outside of the artwork itself -- the viewer either has the experiences for those connections to alight and create a mental spectacle, or they don't (yet.) Sometimes you can come back to an artwork (movie, poem, painting, song etc.) and be blown away by how much you enjoy it due to having new knowledge and experiences. And sometimes you will never enjoy an artwork very much because it cannot connect with you. That's not a fault of you or the artwork, but just the reality of so many experiences making universal connections impossible. The more broad the connections, the more shallow; so to go for deep connections an artwork must necessarily alienate some. Artworks that are both deeply connecting and massively appealing are exceptional and often generation-defining. More 'artsy' kinds of media are often labeled as pretentious, but it's more that they're more collaborative with the audience. The audience has to bring their previous experiences and knowledge to participate. It's the same as enjoyment of sports which for some reason isn't deemed pretentious but from my understanding is using the exact same principles. While some very exceptional moments can be appreciated by people with no knowledge of the sport, the majority of the enjoyment comes from understanding the rules and strategy, the history of the competitors, and the stories of the individual players. All that to say, BKC probably connects with movies that satisfy his knowledge of other movies, other art experiences, and events in his life, as others do. His movie experiences seem both technical, historical, and well-studied, so aspects of film craft that seem confusing or obtuse may be a big part of what is appealing to him. I think the amazing thing about artworks is that they can often connect with people inspite of big differences in knowledge and experience, which is why so many great artworks continue to resonate with people across the gulf of accessibility. But we still often need to build little bridges to start, and if you don't have a starting point you pretty much have to look elsewhere to have a good experience.

@@watsonwrote ye that's a good way of putting it. It's like if someone who doesn't play mons watched an SPL finals game and didn't understand why people enjoyed mons. watsonwrote already expressed the general idea wonderfully, but for me personally, I don't think any of the great movies, no matter how obscure they are to the average person, require an obsession with movies or knowledge of film history or anything like that to appreciate - just an open mind and an appreciation for art. I think with these you can appreciate even something like, say, last year at marienbad. in broad terms, this means taking the movie on its own terms - it might not give you all the answers, or might move at a pace you're not used to, but should be recognized that it's not a fault of the movie's and is by design, so you gotta get on its wavelength, even if it's not really your thing. as for mulholland itself, once you realize that, for all its strangeness and goofy moments, it is about a mind trying to reconcile itself with lost love more than anything else, I think you'll find it resonating even more strongly! think of the last 30 minutes as setting the context for the first 2, especially with one of the earliest shots being what it is (iirc it's the first one after the jitterbug opening?), and how Strange the acting is in contrast to what comes later. note the juxtapositions in general, and the elements that repeat themselves later on. it sounds like a lot of work but it really is unbelievably rewarding when it hits

I agree with the majority of your criticisms of Nosferatu besides the visuals and sound design (masterful). The jumpscares I'm torn on since they provide a visceral fear with the Count as a true force of unknowable evil. There was one or two definitely unnecessary ones. The score was serviceable and at times like you said emotionally manipulative rather than organic but it wasn't distracting. Seems like you're ignoring some of the amazing performances in it, the flow and picture of when he first goes to the castle, the design of Nosferatu and his great delivery....Willem Dafoe's character has a subtle humor a couple times. I think any more humor than that in this movie would've ruined its vibe. Felt like complete despair before they gather to defeat him. I think you're right about it not saying much new, being a little too tied to tropes, and there was some lacking feeling of great passion in it. I think Lily Rose Depp performed in a really out there unsettling way but didn't sell totally the humanity of her character, and the other characters are all a bit too flat. Those are mostly problems in both of the other prominent versions of Nosferatu. He made Thomas a bit more competent in this version but not enough to actually connect with him, to make the ending feel really tragic. Idk how you thought The Witch is just okay, it's nearly a masterpiece. The Lighthouse was original but The Witch has a depth to the folklore and history it pulls from + its family drama that gives it much greater catharsis. This Nosferatu has some of that spark in the Count as a veritable face of evil which maybe you don't connect with now since you didn't feel it in The Witch.
