Thanks for this video. Used to use the Ilford HP5 with a green filter to photograph portraits, especially of people with darker than a paper bag skin tone; and use Tri-X alot when doing street photography, but what brought me to this video: I was bequeathed some Fomapan 400 (and some Bergger Pancro 400). Your video showed each film's strengths and weaknesses pretty well. Everyone has their favorite films. Really enjoyed the photos and was most surprised by how well the Retropan looked. Bravo!
@LANolan8 жыл бұрын
HP5 is so dull though. Tri-X has that pop to it!
@NegativeFeedback8 жыл бұрын
You think so? I like it being flatter, it's much easier to add some pop in with a curve later, whereas the tri-x is hard to take away the contrast. I prefer having the more blank canvas!
@LANolan8 жыл бұрын
+NegativeFeedback I hear ya. You might wanna try Tmax 400 then. Ultra-smooth!
@Lawful_Rebel8 жыл бұрын
Depending on your exposure, developer and development routine... Any film can POP.. As it were :) Tri-X in either Xtol or HC-110 is amazing. I tend to shoot TRI-X at 160, 320, 640, 1250 etc. I also over expose and cut development Time depending on the environment I'm shooting in.. I also like to use a yellow/Green filter in bright light with Tri-X while pushing 1or 2 stops.. Great contrast but gives more detail. I also love HP5 as it has better tonal separation than Tri-X when pushed for me. If I want less contrast from a shoot, I'll use Ilford. NOT used Retro chrome but have used all the Fomapan range. One thing to bear in mind is that they are not the ISO stated when standard developers are used ie 100 is more like 50/64 ISO, 200 is more like 125 ISO and 400 is more akin to 250 ISO. Use Foma's own developer or something like Ilford DDX and you'll get closer to full film speed. Any developer can be used of course but adjustments in exposure and development need to be made to get the best from these files. Use them though, they are fantastic.
@zguy951358 жыл бұрын
Tri-X in DDX is really great as well, especially if you're pushing. Base speed gets bumped to 640 asa so 1600 looks really nice since it's just over 1 stop pushed. Still has contrast and tri-x grit but not nearly as harsh as in Rodinal. The grain is finer too.

Definitely agree with your comments in the end. I can't find Retropan where I live so I stick with HP5 as my favourite and use Foma 400 as a cheap alternative, to use in a more daily photography or to experiment different things. Agree with what you say on Hp5 being more of a blank canvas, but I have found that the choice of developer makes a much bigger difference than the film stock. I use Kodak XTOL, which tends to produce quite flat negatives that retain a lot of detail. It's then up to you as the scanner to put the contrast back in.
@imagineandaspire75818 жыл бұрын
Foma 200 is an odd beast. I've used it in 35mm, 120 and 5X4 and found it a bit flat at box speed. It seems happier down rated to 100ISO. Foma 100 and 400 seems much better behaved and in 35mm responds well to stand development in Rodinal 1 + 100.

Great video, have you tried to pull Tri-X one stop, ID11, 1+1 for 7:45 mins, this might control the contrast and the grain. I am currently developing all my B&W films in Ilford Perceptol 1+1, just deved a roll of Rollei RPX 25 in it.

Wow, I can really see the difference in contrast between the HP5 and Tri-X! And I definitely agree about it being better to add more contrast later if you want, than having too much to begin with. One film you didn't test in this video, though, is Kentmere 400. Have you had any experience with it? I've been afraid to try Foma because of the reputation for scratching easily, and Kentmere is the next cheapest after Foma in my area so that's what I've been using the most over the past few months that I've gotten back into film.

I would love to see what you think of Kentmere 100. I have been shooting it for almost a year now and have been absolutely loving it so far. It's not quite as fine grain as ACROS(which is what I switched from) but it's a hell of a lot less expensive and tends to handle highlights and shadows decently as well as being pushed to 400.

George, do you recall what your setting were? And more importantly how did you meter. Looks like you have great shadow detail and not blown out highlights. I'm never sure how to meter in direct sun. And what aperture were you at? Looks light around f8.

Nicely done, and thanks for the comparison, It reaffirms my decision in shooting HP5+ film. I am also curious about trying Kentmere 400 as some have said it is similar to HP5 and slightly cheaper on B&H.
@bwc19766 жыл бұрын
HP5 and Kentmere both have lower contrast than Tri-X, but I haven't shot enough of them yet to make a fair comparison of the grain.
@davesumner8 жыл бұрын
I started shooting HP5 in the 1980s. HP5 Plus is different and doesn't push as well as the old emulsion. Compared to contemporary Tri-X I prefer HP5 Plus. I have shot a lot of Foma films and I agree RetroPan is quite grainy and I'm not a fan. But I do consider Fomapan 400 a good film. I do like Czech film and really like Fomapan 100. In the past year I have been shooting quite a lot of Kentmere 100 & 400 and Kentmere (made by Harman ie. Illford) has become my primary film.

This was a very interesting presentation. I am familiar with Ilford HP5+ and Kodak Tri-X Pan. I've shot Tri-X Pan since 1968. Film preference is a hard thing to nail because it is based on one person't opinion. I like and shoot Ilford HP5+ but still think Kodak Tri-X Pan is my favorite. I have recently started trying Ilford Delta 400, which you did not review. Good Job!
@berkeleygang18343 жыл бұрын
You've got me curious, because your opinion of HP5+ vs. Tri-X seems to be opposite others. That is, others claiming HP5+ not holding up in the shadows. Of the films you tested, I was most impressed by Retropan 320 soft. As you said, it's easier to add contrast in post processing (even in traditional printing - there are more higher contrast grade papers than low contrast papers) than it is to reduce contrast. Unfortunately, the photos are no longer available on your link, so I'm left with trying to evaluate what you've presented here in the video. It's great we have so many options in these days when film was supposed to be long gone. Even 5 years later, I think all these films are still available! "Used to be" two different Tri-X films, at least in medium format (120/220). Tri-X that you're used to at 400 speed, and Tri-X Professional at 320. AFAIK, the Professional / 320 speed version was not offered in 35mm. Reportedly a bit softer (lower contrast) than regular Tri-X. I wonder if the Tri-X Professional formulation is what lives on as Retropan 320 Soft. In any case, looked like a fun project, and I thank you for sharing.

I would like to know what you think about Ilford XP2 Super and have you ever shot with this film! Thanks!
@jmowreader95558 жыл бұрын
Ilford XP2 Super is a nice film. It's got two fun features. Most important: it's Process C-41. Any place that develops film, develops C-41; not so with "true" black & white film. Not AS important but nice nevertheless: the exposure latitude of this film is so wide you can change ISO (50 to 800 is the working range) in mid-roll, and the slower you shoot it at the finer the grain gets. It's also reasonably priced - in line with color neg film, which is what it is. Get three rolls and see what you think.

I ended up here looking for videos on the Foma---I wonder if it needs underexposing to rescue some of the shadow detail that was lost at box speed. I'm a fan of the HP5! I don't mind the grain texture. TriX looks too crisp to me, like digital.

I'm a sucker for high contrast, so my opinion is heavily biased towards Tri-X. It has a very clear, almost harsh look to it, and I absolutely love it. HP5 is also a great film, no doubt - and it is a very close second in my book.

love this! I'm also experimenting with b&w film I mainly use kentmere because that was given to me cheap by my uni but I've purchased a roll of tri-x and am currently shooting that since everyone seems to love it so much but honestly it's 14 bucks a roll in Ontario which is way to expensive so it's probably my last. I've heard of fomapan and HP a lot so I might try those out but my go to for now is Kentmere which is what I used for my photo that's my icon lol.
