This mission is actually a great example of an Achilles heel for the empire during WW2. Although Japan was able to produce sufficient oil with their invasion of British malaya their Navy didn't have the numbers to protect their oil tankers and as a result they became easily vulnerable to American airstrikes. The oil shortage got so bad as a result of this that the imperial navy resorted to producing ships that ran on coal
