Fantastic curry 😋. I just tried it and the taste was really different from the curry i usually make with the common chickpeas. I am impressed by the way you can make so many different curries with more or less the same spices and aromatics. But the methods make all the difference. Thank you for sharing your creative talent with us. 🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤

I did it, Bumbi--I did it!!! I made the recipe and it came out very tasty. Of course, I am a complete klutz and could never do it with the calm and grace which you show us. When I was done, every large spoon, slotted and plain, was dirty, every chopping knife, every little spice bowl. There was curry everywhere, and I don’t mean from the cooker. It was all ME. I am that clumsy. I was filthy, my kitchen was filthy-- Bumbi, I had cilantro in my HAIR!! This is the sort of thing that happens when I try out new recipes. I believe I am the only person who could cut herself with a spoon. I used the 3L Hawkins, which, by the way, is every bit as noisy as the 5L one. Every stove is different, and I tend to overcook, so I set the timer a bit early, and can proudly report that on MY stove, at 25 minutes under pressure, the beans were perfect. I think that during that time, I got four “whistles” (The New Delhi Police Department should have such whistles) and wasn’t about to hang around for the fifth. I was as nervous as a cat in the dog pound. I was able to put aside a small portion of cooked beans for a treat on another day, and the main batch can be eaten tonight, with perhaps a small portion for later. Thank you again for the recipe!!

Hahaha 🤣 your description made me laugh aloud , “cat in the dog pound” , hahaha, that is hilarious. Though you have a lot of dishes to do, now that everything has curry imprints on them, but you did it !! I am so very happy that you put in all that effort and all credit goes to you. Now when you will have it you will realize how rewarding it is and all that effort is really worth it. The cooking time does vary from stove to stove and the heat level . The noise levels of all those pressure cookers are same irrespective of size or volume. So very happy to get your lovely feedback. Thanks a lot. Enjoy having it and happy cooking.

Loved it! This is nutrition without compromising on taste. You know the other day while doing your chk butter masala, the pan got very brown while cooking the chicken (it didn't turn bitter though, and more than a few ended up in my mouth just to check😃), so I changed to a kadai while making the gravy.

I LOVE those Kala Chana. When I do them right, the skin stays a bit firm but the inside is soft, so every time I bite into one, it's like biting into a tiny baked potato. They are my favorte bean, with the lighter chickpeas as second.

We always use a pressure cooker in India for our dals and beans and each and every household has one, and you’ve bought the right one. The only thing I don’t do is counting the whistles. I always rely on timing my cooking as sometimes the whistles go too early or I lose track of them. At first on high heat allow it to come to full pressure then reduce your heat to medium low and immediately start your timer. In this way you will never go wrong. Please let me know if you have any questions.

@@CurriesWithBumbi There is a learning curve for me. I bought some cookbooks geared toward the stove top pressure cooker, but they can never agree with each other about the times for things like beans, which is basically what I bought the cooker for. My first batch of beans for an Italian style soup came out a little soft, but not too bad. My first batch of dal was a bit overdone. After all, when you open the cooker and you can't FIND the beans, you know you've overcooked. My cooker is a Contura 5L, bought larger than I had planned, because it was from a reputable source, but I had heard and read that for smaller batches, cooking for one, etc., it's better to use a small cooker (keeping in mind amount restrictions) to save fuel. This is a problem with my stove as the grids which hold the pots are kind of high. So, I have now a Hawkins 3L Classic on the way, just to use for my smaller batches of dal and other beans. People on Amazon complained about the Hawkins' whistle being too loud and scary with the steam, but other reviewers scoffed at them as Pressure Cooker Greenhorns, so I paid no mind to it, but you should have been there when it went off!! I nearly jumped out of my skin!! It looked and sounded as if an old-fashioned locomotive had just pulled into my pantry. Still, I love it. That black cooker looks really nice, a far cry from the old versions. More practice is what I need.

@@chagoot1024 haha 😆 your description about the whistle is so funny!! Yes it will be definitely be scary for people who haven’t used such type of pressure cookers. My son used to be very scared of that noise when he was a baby. If you are cooking an Indian style dal, then we like our dals to be all smooth and mushy except a few like chana dal but when it comes to beans, they need to stay intact. For mung, masoor I usually set a timer to 8 minutes. For chana dal , 12 to 15 minutes. You will soon get the hang of it with more trial and errors but all my beans & dal recipes call for time as I never rely on those whistles.

Bumbiji, I just thought of something--what size pressure cooker did you use, or what size stove-top cooker would you recommend for this recipe? I have heard that the Instant Pot style you used often operate at 12 PSI and many stove top styles operate at 15 PSI. Have you cooked this in a regular stove top model, and did you notice a difference in timing for the recipe? Thank you for any advice you can give us on this, as some of us have stove top and some have Instant Pot cookers.
@CurriesWithBumbi
@CurriesWithBumbi 3 жыл бұрын
I cooked this on Instant Pot but I would say it takes the same time as my stovetop pressure cooker when it comes to cooking beans and dal, not much of a difference with the timing. Only thing Instant Pot takes some time to start cooking. When it comes to potatoes, I have seen IP takes 15 minutes while stovetop pressure cookers take 12 minutes. But overall not much of a difference.
