Rollins start in Black Flag is interesting...he was a fan of the band. Started a relationship with the band, went to a lot of shows, one day they let him come on stage and sing a song...little did he know the current lead singer Dez Cardena wanted to focus on guitar and quit singing. The band liked Rollins stage presence and demeanor and the next day they asked him to audition and all of a sudden Henry is the lead singer of his favorite band.

You have to know the Background to the Story. This is the start of HARDCORE Punk. Kids who had no intetest in being in the highschool football team, who didnt want to listen to 70s rock music, who didnt want to follow the reagan kinda 50s feel agenda that was going on to that time... outsiders who met played music and had fun... no big record labels and rock star stuff... kids grabbing a guitar and starting something kids playing for kids... no stage, just the feeling of being understood... finding a space where no one tears em down... United and strong. And the scene grew... bands like the red hot chili Peppers or the beastie boys had their origins there... they started their own record labels and did all by themselves... thats what its about... rise above those society suckers who looked down on em... the birth of a self confident youth saying what they want. Black flag or minor threat and the bad brains are the most imoortant to mention... than there was mdc dead Kennedys or agnostic front from new York... long and very intetesting Story. If someone wants to get it... try the movie "American Hardcore " love and unity, to keep a long Story... not so long ;)

This cat gets it. *NYHC Chronicles* is also pretty good, as is The Godfathers of Hardcore. My neck of the woods has *Boston Beatdown* (or as one of my friends called it, "Snitching on Yourself: The Movie" 😂 *The Decline of Western Civilization* is a good one. That same lady directed *Suburbia* which is a great flick with baby Flea in it. I *know* there is a documentary about Classic Boston Hardcore, but I can't remember if it's named after the *This is Boston, Not LA* compilation. Repo Man (1984) is a good flick with a Classic Hardcore soundtrack, and Emilio Estaves nailing that alienated-eighties-Hardcore-Kid role. Check out the NYHC Chronicles KZbin stream on Wednesdays and Sundays. There's always someone interesting on.

Separation of church and skate is too meta to punk and the music scene. The idiots are taking over, the dig, Lori Meyers, linoleum, indifferent drum, don't call me white, she's gone, all outa angst, Rico, generation z, the man I killed, the California drought, franco Un-American, murder the government and of course The Decline are all better for political outlook. Also I'd argue dinosaurs will die is better for a general audience as it doesn't focus exclusively on punk but the entire corporate music industry.

Yeah I hate when he talks out his ass like that... "Break My Stride" by Matthew Wilder was a Top 40 radio hit back in 1984 and is not exclusive to his "culture" lol... Dude just loves to make shit up to sound knowledgeable to his Millennial followers...
@Well.Pharaoh
@Well.Pharaoh 3 жыл бұрын
Middle aged millennial reporting: I always liked that song too lol Yeah, that *was* a bit of a talking-out-of-ass moment. I was confused when he said "my culture". Culture of what, 80s babies? Is there something significant about the Rocksteady beat? I don't know shit about Matthew Wilder, but I heard that song every day; from Reagan to W. Lionel Richie Huey Louis Billy Ocean Aaron Neville Cindy Lauper Fine Young Cannibals WZID staples! They played some old Motown shit on that station until time happened. Things got weird when Fuel, Six Pence, Matchbox 20, Marcy Playground, and so on happened. It probably jumped the shark around Spin Doctors and Blues Travelers times. "Cool varieties of th 70s, 80s, and 90s, but why listen to Fastball on WZID when you could hear it on sellout era WBCN followed by Bush or something 😂? WBCN was like college radio tier obscurity up to 1996 because people are boring, and want to hear "Smells Like Teen Spirit" twice a day on the radio. FNX was the same in the early aughties, but worse just for the fact that they played Crazy Town, but there was also At The Drive In. They made a good move around 2003 when they started playing all those bands that sound like The Strokes. That's what "alternative rock" actually sounded like. People were sick of bands like Disturbed, and Afro Man's pre-9/11-summer innocence wasn't hacking it as we got bogged down in an illegal war we're still in. Obviously the most prolific thing on FNX during the winter of 2000/2001 was Outkast's "Bombs Over Baghdad", and even if someone could make a coherent argument otherwise, they still couldn't deny that it was at least prophetic a few years later. I don't know why I felt such a compulsion to say all this shit. Adderall is a hell of a drug.

I think you should try and get an interview with Rollins like it was suggested below. Maybe check out some of his songs.

It's about L.A. cops who were on a crusade to stop Black Flag from playing anywhere. A lot of Black Flag's songs are about cops.

I think it would be interesting to see what Vin would think about Kottonmouth Kings blend of punk and rap like Dying Daze.

Henry Rollins. Singer, writer, Author, actor, and spoken word artist. Owns a book company. Started as a lead singer of Black Flag and from then on he was like a fish to water and did exactly in his life what "Rise Above" was all about. Also has traveled most of the world and almost has never quit moving since he was born. Thank you for giving an open minded review of some of these legendary Punk bands. If you are interested check out The Desaparecidos song "The Happiest Place On Earth" it is a more recent Punk song, even if you don't review it I think you might like it lyrically.

@@jensbaumann6945 I try to mention them as much as possible, it amazes me how little known they are now. When I was growing up in the 90's they were the raddest band around. No one could could even come close to what these guys were doing at the time. Rip Jason, Bomer, and Derrick. BTW check out "The Other" with Bomer, Chris and Boz if you haven't already.

@@andytonetti2547 yes rkl are pure gold... but people today just dont appreciate their genius.. they dont even know. they hardly heard of the bad brains.. sad. And yes the other are also great. Different but i love that Album... There was so much great stuff out back than... articles of faith, mdc... today most Hardcore bands are just doing this noise thing... or sound like metalcore... i put some poison idea on right now ;)

Also, that domination convo reminds me... Check out Dominate by Morbid Angel. I think they're long overdue for a video. Also, Incendiary. They're a hardcore band. Still Burning & Fact Or Fiction fucking slap, my guys. A lot of political themes there as well, similar to this song.
