That's classic. They did a funny mock interview. Chuck, Henry and Dez. Where they play like instead of a gig scene, they are in a scene of punks who just have TV parties every day lol kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHWXkJ56gZeMnLc

Guitarist Greg Ginn was the mastermind behind Black Flag and he started the labet SST. The bands they released (Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, the Meat Puppets, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Jr.) would play a major part in the development of alternative rock. You should check out The Process of Weeding Out off their Live '84 album.

Hey JP, Ned from Spain again to say YYYEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH Black Flag !!!! This was one of my life changing albums along with Bad Brains "Roir", Dead Kennedys " Fresh Fruit.." Minor Threat , D.O.A. " Bloodied.." Circle Jerks and many other of the US / Canada Hardcore bands. The vox are by Henry Rollins who was their 4th singer. Original member and 1st singer Keith Morris went on to form Circle Jerks and recent punk monster band Off ! All of Black Flag's albums with a few exceptions are essential. In the beginning they were inspired by the Ramones but as they evolved felt closer to Black Sabbath . More please and a whopping thanks for this.

I highly suggest checking out Hüsker Dü. They were labelmates with Black Flag and were just as influential. They're more melodic than their hardcore contemporaries and their sound shifted (or "evolved" depending on your feelings of punk) from hardcore to power pop, all while keeping their punk energy. Almost like a missing link between 80s hardcore and 90s alternative. They were also one of the few punk bands of the day who didn't shun classic rock and would perform covers of Donovan, Bob Dylan, The Byrds and The Beatles. Great songs to start with are "Something I Learned Today", "Pink Turns to Blue", "The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill", "Celebrated Summer" and "Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely". Can't go wrong with any of those. Zen Arcade and New Day Rising are considered their stand-out albums, though Zen Arcade may be more imposing with its 70-minute runtime and noisier aesthetic. But their discography is fairly small with little-to-no dips and is well worth a listen!

Don't think it's that surprising. He says he never got into punk and, judging by his age, I'm guessing the punk he would've been exposed to would've probably been the pop punk that was popular in the 2000s.

Working at my first computer company, I ended up in the DJ cubicle (the only cubicle that had access to a free outlet that we plugged in a CD Boom Box). Black Flag was in heavy rotation (along with some other bands you should definitely react to - Cake (Fashion Nugget), Beck (ODELAY), Black Lab (Your Body Above Me), Insane Clown Posse (The Great Malenko))

I worked at a restaurant, and I was the dishwasher. I was also the only guy who could reliably get the Sonos system working, so I had Pink Martini playing in the dining area (look them up, they're quite good), and in the back we played Tupac, Biggie, The Stooges, Beastie Boys, all kinds of stuff.

I recommend the Minutemen! They were close friends with Black Flag but used clean guitar tone and sang about workers, refugees, militarism. They were a jazzy funky punk Woody Guthrie. You might enjoy them more than Black Flag. I also love Dead Kennedys despite their morbid name

Hey JP, I've discovered yourt channel few months ago and I quite enjoy watching it. Since my favorite genre of music is hardcore punk, I love your reactions to punk and post punk bands. I enjoyed a lot your reactions/reviews of Magazine and Wire. I recomend you to listen Sacondhand Daylight album by Magazine which is their second and my favorite Magazine album. Also, as for hardcore punk, definitely check out Adolescents and their first Self Titled album from 1981. Specially the track Kids Of The Black Hole. Also, Black Flag is one of the most important hardcore punk bands, they are still very respectful and life changing band.

Thanks for the shout out Justin! Btw the g is silent so its pronounced like "Hudson". There's an cover of "Boys of Summer" by Ataris that changes the line "I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac" to "I saw a Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac". They were a very big band in punk and there are many more you haven't heard of yet. Lots of underground stuff too. Hope you continue exploring.

I have probably neglected US hardcore punk as its zenith came a few years after UK punk. I think that Husker Du's 'Zen Arcade' (listen to the double album in one go for the full experience) is the pinnacle of that sound as it sounds way more mature than this track or the Bad Brains you were listening to recently. but, as I say, I'm not an expert on this particular genre. This is probably great live but a little flat on record.

While there were certainly 'better' (IMO) punk bands around at the time, and since, there are few that are as iconic as Black Flag... though I suspect that has more to do with the ubiquity of the logo on stickers, patches and t-shirts EVERYWHERE in the early-to-mid 80s.

I'm usually torn between wincing and smiling nowadays when i hear this stuff. Nostalgically, remembering the times, the atmos, and excitement, yes fair enough. Hearing it now... basically there's very little substance here. A short, fast song, almost melodyless, and with only the barest of solo's. Does it bring a rosy glow of the old days? For a second, yes. Will I be listening to any more of this, not on your nelly.

@@pentagrammaton6793 Musically inferior to whom and what? I mean, punk is not supposed to be ultra technical like progressive rock or jazz-rock. Yes it's still basic, but on the other hand for me I need a little melodic element or a musical hook. When it starts to become Oi! or hardcore punk, that doesn't interest me anymore.
