If you get caught in the bush without protective gear and see a swarm of mosquitoes or black flies heading for you, immediately get into a large bush and pull the branches and leaves around you. The bush helps absorb your CO2, it changes your heat signature, and the leaves act as some kind of deflection for the swarm. After 10-15 minutes at most, they will be gone and you can emerge. As for the net and diesel fuel, I have seen clothing soaked in DEET, then dried, and worn by military personnel. How good it is, I do not know. Thanks, Lars.

This diesel trick is often used in the US with a slight twist, you douse a cloth-wrapped rope in diesel and hang it where cattle can walk underneath to rub their backs.

Thank you for the great video, Lars! Here in Ohio, we have black flies, regular nasty mosquitoes, and biting midge flies. Some of the mosquitoes are worse than black flies because we have a species that has a short, blunt, beak and no numbing agent in the saliva. So when you get bit, it hurts immediately, and leaves spots of blood at the wound. Sort of like getting stabbed with a blunt needle.

Better to use not a fishing net, but a *string grocery bags* or avoska in Russian. Im 99% sure that's what that old timer was actually using. You can easily find one on eBay/amazon, in a reusable bags section. They're quite cheap if you buy a pack, and you can use them as reusable bags for the rest of your life. Many grandfathers in Russia still carry groceries in them, using ones from the soviet times, they're that indestructible.

Thanks for the tip Lars. I live in the north of Sweden, and yes, "knott" (or black flies) are definitely worse then mosquitos! They get you in all the worst places, the places mosquitos don't reach. And they sometimes come in unbelievable numbers... Especially if you dig a hole in the ground and/or sweat a lot! The two times that I got attacked so bad I almost lost my mind, was one, when I dug a cable trench. And two, (a few years later) when I was refurbishing a shallow water well. Funny fail: when I was fixing the well I had special Swedish mosquito repellent (called "MYGGA") on my face and hands, so they were kind of ok. But as I worked stooped over for hours, my pants and my shirt had slid apart in the back without me noticing it. Well , in an effort not get too grafik here Lars, let's just say that a day later I had at least a couple hundred itchy bites on my lower back (and just below that...) Jeeez!!!

I use a long pole with a metal mesh cup and any combustion engine. What I do is capture the most aggressive black fly and place it in the mesh cup. Then with the engine running I place the mesh cup in front of the engine exhaust. It takes about 10 seconds for the fly to perish. Once done the flies may select a new leader, so you may have to repeat this process several hundred thousand times, but it WORKS! However, I do suspect that your method is possibly a bit more efficient.

Black flies reproduce in streams (running water). You can see the larvae on twigs and stuff. They absolutely need running water, unlike mosquitoes that require stagnant water. Deer flies lay their eggs in mud.

If you thoroughly saturate an old shirt with DEET, or similar insect repellent, and store it in a plastic bag, it can be worn whenever you're out in the swamps, or muskegs to prevent being swarmed by mosquitoes or black flies.''' it works well...Cheers.

What are the broad leaf plants growing in the background? You should do a video on survival farming of essential vegetables and other items used by the old timers in the region.

That's how DEET was invented. People working up north, using it as an industrial solvent noticed it kept them away. At least that's the story. Here in Canada, when people go on canoe trips, a lot of us wear "the Original Bug Shirt". It's made in Ontario, and is a light cotton hoodie that is too tightly woven for mosquitos to sting through, and over the face is a mesh. With a hat on underneath, it keeps it off your face. Also, for ventilation is has a baggy mesh under the arms. It's well known here for people who spend a lot of time in the woods. But they also sell mesh suits sort of like what you're talking about that is treated with a chemical, that I suspect is more dangerous than diesel. Your idea is definitely worth a try!

calvin mientke Well we call them moose here and you are correct in that they do find it miserable at that time of the year (mid-May until early July typically..)

Thanks Lars! I didn't even let it dry! They can drive you nuts and that's a short drive for me! And once you've been there, do you ever make it all the way back? Are there a bunch of stinging critters there?👍🐝

I wonder how well this would work with a KZS camo net suit. My contact who I will buy one from told me it works really well on its own against mosquitoes at least.

For once I'm glad I'm in the American Midwest. I thought gnats and mosquitoes were annoying. We have black flies too but not nearly like the guy with the fish. Maybe you could make a mosquito proof Austin Powers costume by soaking the frilly parts in diesel? Any old timer tips would be cool. Or even

This August I went to the Northern part of the Komi Republic. Clouds of gnat - mosquitos, black flies, biting midges. I would gladly share some personal experience on how to ward off the little buggers. 1. Clothes. Jackets with built-in mosquito nets or protective clothes made of fine mesh. 2. DEET. Sprays and ointments alike, 3M Ultrathon deserves a special mentioning. 3. Locals also recommend vanilla extract (mix it with water or baby cream and apply). 4.Also read about Pavlovsky's net (some kind of fishing net soaked with repellents that can be worn under your hat.) Hopefully this might prove useful. Stay safe everyone.
