In my opinion, the reason why so many of our folks don't do certain things is because we've convinced ourselves that "Black folks don't." Why do we submit ourselves to such "group-think"; as if a black person can't make a decision for himself or herself? There's a whole world of things to be experienced and enjoyed. Why do we enslave ourselves, limit ourselves, label ourselves as people who can't, won't or don't? The truth is, there are many black folks who camp, fish, hunt, swim, do gymnastics, golf, play tennis and a whole lot of other things. They've (We've) learned that a mind that is free is a mind that can explore, accomplish and enjoy anything this world has to offer.

I camp. I love it. My husband never did until I asked him to go. And our 3 boys loved it till they grew up. One said he would do this with his own family when he is older. My dogs love to run and be adventurous. We love to camp around the lake in Utah. We live in LV so that is our backyard. I hate to hear people say WE don't do this or that. I try and like a lot of things. So we should categorize US.. Because WE are NOT the SAME!!

It’s just sad and heart breaking to watch these videos as a black person. I've gone camping all my life, I swim and I’m an atheist. Black people are human we do everything other humans do, good and bad. Maybe that’s the point of these videos and it reminds me of this quote. Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge. Isaac Asimov It’s not black people it’s just you.

This is a race-baiting video -- period. First of all, it totally intellectualizes camping as a way to define it as a novel, alien, purely nostalgic act. That offends anyone who goes camping regularly as a way to unplug and connect with nature. But by creating this great distance from the act of camping, it then allows them to stereotype white people --- and especially white southern people --- who camp. Sorry, I have 2 masters degrees, and I'm from the intellectual bedrock of the country (New England and New York), and I went to very good schools, and I go camping. And it isn't some novel, nostalgic act. That whole bit in which that woman stereotypes southern white people who camp..........how would she stereotype southern black people who camp? What negative images might she have to convey about them?

Well, I'm black and I enjoy camping, swimming, boating, riding horses, and bike riding (to name a few) .. and exposed my children to these things as well .. they were taught to embrace everything life has to offer and not be afraid to be different. My husband (who's also black) enjoys the same things I do .. we used to camp out in tents until we got an RV, and in all my years of outdoor adventure I saw very few, if any, black families .. you wouldn't believe how many times I've been asked why black people don't like to be outdoors. I don't understand it. You'll never know what you like until you try it.

I don't know how I came across this video, but it makes me want to do it even more now to show we also do the same things as other races. I've been camping and backpacking since a young girl. This Black woman went to the Yukon and traveled around Alaska. I agree with you. I did it in 2011 and plan to do another trip to Juneau in 2019. I spent 3 months in Alaska and Canada in 2011. I traveled solo from Georgia to British Columbia (the beginning of the Alaska Hwy) and that is where I met a caravan of other travelers to traverse the Yukon and to travel the Alaska Hwy and some other major highways in Alaska. I towed my travel trailer by myself. Yes, we do like doing stuff. The only reason I joined the caravan is that I promised my friends that I would do it. My trip in 2019 will be solo, however, I will not be traveling as much. I plan to find a campground and stay there for a couple of months and then travel back stateside.

@YaoMengLiew Weird. I see Asians out on the trails in the mid-Atlantic region all the time. Shenandoah, the AT, elsewhere. Agree with you though... it's about "hiking your own hike" being out on the trail isn't about being recognized for your social or cultural bravery. It's about getting closer to nature and finding yourself.

I have to shake my head at this as I'm watching it in 2021! In the past several years all I hear is so many Black folks complaining about what they don't have, what they are deprived of, what's being kept from them, yet the people in this video give the impression that they would/could never leave all of their "comforts" to go camping! It's like many of us are living better than we let on. I'm over 60 and I've known Black folks who go camping, fishing, and hunting all the time. I wish Black people would stop saying " WE don't ...."! We complain about being stereotyped yet we do it to ourselves.

And for black people who claim camping is too expensive, they don't have a clue and have never gone camping. That is completely false. Camping is the least expensive vacation you will ever take and I've gone on several camping trips. The average campgrounds are $4 to $23 dollars a nights for a rv/tent campsite with electrical hook ups, showers, and restrooms. Most campgrounds these days, have cable hook up, wifi, pools or beaches, and most have lakes for fishing. Not to mention the thousands of free campsites on public government land across the country. People have too many excuses for why they can't do something.

We did s'mores camp fire thing, cooking and grilling out doors, as well. Now, that the children are grown, and we have grandchildren too, we go camping with them in our huge RV. But we still camp, fish, grill, and do the campfire thing, but we no longer have to bathe, potty, nor sleep outside. It's far from "most", even. 'Black people' go camping in places where everyone goes camping. If you're in the Midwest, as many 'black people' are going to go camping as there are 'white people', etc. Most 'black people' in large urban cities aren't going to go camping... but most 'non-black people' in those areas aren't going to, either. It's just a pretty hard and dumb twist of logic at work here. I grew up in the Midwest and I really never met more than a couple people who didn't like camping. It's just about enjoying fresh air and spoiling yourself with great food. Skin color isn't going to change your opinion on barbeque, fresh caught fish, smores or getting muddy in the river.

Jennifer Evans From some comments I see that some blacks camped in the North. Down south, blacks camping would not be wise. We are beening gunned down the streets in the daylight. Why would we voluntarilly become a target. It does seems to be an awesome experience when we see others enjoy it. They don't fear for their very lives. As a child in the south, I remember night riders. White men in trucks riding through our neighborhood shooting guns at our homes, shooting out windows. We all had to lie on the floor and be very still until they rode through. Now, that's the reason my family couldn't enjoy an awesome camping trip. We wanted to remain alive! Things have not changed. Blacks are still being gunned down. I still, in 2015, would not go camping.

As an outdoor enthusiast this video made me feel "some kind of way." Being outdoors is incredible and one of my favorite activities i share with my children. I have lived in Florida for 30 years...Orlando, Florida and traveled extensively. I have done it all but nothing compares to my outdoor time. I was a residential director for a camp whose majority population was Black children from affluent families (yea you heard me right) and even with that population, it was always incredible to watch them embrace the varied outdoor activities that were available to them. I just wish we as a people would be more open to just trying different things...those things we don't "typically" do. Not for the satisfaction of others but for our own enjoyment.

I hate, hate, hate, camping with a passion. My girlfriend demanded we go camping for my birthday, never mind the fact that it was MY birthday. She said it was cheap, it was going to be romantic and fun. The camping equipment alone ran up to like 1000 dollars. Then my little inflatable bed deflated in the middle of the night. The ground was like cold cement. I got really sick. My dog scratched his eye on the bushes while going out for a "romantic" hike. The vet bill cost me 600 bucks. F@$k camping. I'll never go again. I should have broke up with my girlfriend over this sh*t.

The trick is to start off easy. Do not take any newbie of any race on a difficult camping trip. You'll only turn them off from it. Start with a one night camp out in summer with good food, drink and comfortable bedding. Then, if they had a good time you can move on to longer or more difficult campouts.

The old school black revolutionaries DID know and teach their communities survival skills, rural/primitive living skills, marksmanship/weapons maintenance, bush craft, basic nutrition, etc...(Universal Zulu Nation, Black Panthers, Nation of Islam, 5%ers, M.O.V.E.) They understood that the government was not a reliable source of protection. Today's children learn that potato chips come from the store and movie stars are really cool! This is unacceptable for ALL races, because when the system fails (Katrina, Sandy, etc...) you better know how to at LEAST purify water, build a shelter, and make a fire. PROTECT YOURSELVES AND YOUR FAMILIES, or wait for the government and see how that works out...

Although stared at, no problems, except once someone stole our (outside) water filter (we have a 5th wheel) at a campsite I won't name,, and recently we found one of the pins to the Hitch was missing. Don't think it became dislodged on its' own, because it's hell to pull out. Since we stayed at 2 campsites, impossible to determine where it occurred. From now on anytime we dislodge the truck from the 5th wheel, those pins are coming out. Be safe, alert, and on your guard.

Interesting. It is worth noting that the "black people" phrase in this video is loosely used because it doesn't necessarily include all black people. Having said that, indigenous people never had a need to camp because they lived out in the woods. The got along with nature and enjoyed it. Camping was started by Europeans.

I think a lot of black people from the city don't camp because they're too busy working. When I was a kid we didn't have much time or money for vacations. I agree with the woman who said black people would rather be in comfort. A lot of black people struggle daily so I don't think they want to go sleep in the woods when they don't have to. I do plan to go camping eventually though. It looks fun.

Ok, I just decided to become "outdoorsy", on a whim, when I was told that my Vitamin D levels were tragically low. Come to find out, this is something that afflicts a lot (dare I say most?) blacks. As a rule we don't like to be outside. I think slavery scarred us for many generations to come, honestly. We went through hell for the luxury of being INSIDE. Still I am trying to take this to the spirit - that our rightful place is with this beautiful Earth that God made. I like to believe that something more primal than the mental/muscle memory of being oppressed and victimized for our skin color will win the day. I like to assert that we didn't fight the slave owning societies to obtain hard won homes just to become prisoners in those homes and that we have as much right to the land around us as do others. And frankly black skin was custom made to withstand being outside - though I often say that I would have lasted all of five minutes as a slave because, well, the sun is hot and I'd either drop dead from sheer force of will or be beaten to death as I collapse to the ground refusing to move because I'm too hot - kind of like I do now, except with no beating, just a lot of people shaking their damn heads. I hope I can overcome all of this and that I can somehow work through my intense arachnaphobia and redneckaphobia and relax enough to enjoy myself. Wish me luck!

Suggestion: join a Hiking Club, start with Beginner Level/Easy, flat hiking (if there's such a classification). You could be the only Black person, but so what? Enjoy the Experience. Or, try buddying up with a friend and find a local flat trail. Don't hike alone, especially in this negative climate. The idea is to get outdoors and really breathe in that pure air. It's believed that Forest Bathing (walking on a trail closely surrounded by trees) brings one's stress level down. I lived in the city, and found that when I hit the trail, I was so more relaxed. Doing so was one reason I moved from the city. Good luck!

Check out a KOA (Kampgrounds of America) Campground, don't camp out by yourself. They have cabins and tent sites for those who don't have RVs; however, I'd suggest a cabin at first, plus you're not isolated. They're also supplied with fire rings, so you can start, and build your own fire safely.

If you are new to bushcraft, campin, hiking or survival don't make the mistake that newbies make which is, buying way too much gear and buying gear that is way too big and heavy. The general rule is that the more bushcraft skills you know, the less you will need to carry in your backpack. Asside from the obvious skills you would expect, one of the most important and useful skills you should master is learning all the essential bushcraft and survival guick release knots. Knot tying is what is known as a "quick skill, " because you can learn them quickl and you can even teach yourself. Download 3D knots to your phone or tablet for free. You will use this skill in many areas of your life for the rest of your life.

Today on Yahoo there was an article about black people not going to our National Parks. I left a comment and referenced this vid. Then I watched it again. I love the woman telling the story of her white boyfriend, sees a snake and goes after it, while she has "lost her whole mind". I have to admit, I've done that, gone after snakes in the woods and in the water. When I was a kid I was quick enough to catch them. But the truth is, lots of people are freaked out by snakes, even when they know they are harmless. I was once taking a bike ride on Mackinaw Island, with a bunch of other people. We come around a turn and there are about 10 garder snakes crossing the road in front of us. One woman starts shrieking. I try to calm her down, informing her that garder snakes are harmless. She says "But it's a snake!"

It can be scary camping alone. I have done it for weeks at a time in the wilds of both Florida and Colorado. I had a pack of red wolves get flooded out of the lower acres hang out with me for weeks in the dry section, but they were cool, not shy at all but still respectful. The giant opossum was aggressive and scary tho. A black panther lived in the neighborhood, but I only heard it, sounded like a woman screaming. Colorado though, that is scary. I had a growling mountain lion a couple of feet outside my tent. He did turn and leave as soon as I told him to. But it was the 450 lb plus bear a couple of feet outside my house window sizing me up that was the scariest. Note to campers, buy bear spray and be careful not to spray yourself with it.

From some comments I see that some blacks camped in the North. Down south, blacks camping would not be wise. We are being gunned down the streets in the daylight.

I think people are taking this a bit too seriously. Thing is, a LOT of black people don't camp. A lot more than those who actually do (and, yes, there are those who do, of course). And it's also a comparison that, compared to white people, black people are definitely a lot less likely to camp. Of course people are all different and you can never generalize completely, but this is a video just talking about "in general" you're not going to meet a ton of black people who even think about going camping. It's just not something in the culture much.

surprisingly everyone neglected to mention that up to maybe 40-50 years ago (and probably even today, though to a [hopefully] greatly diminished degree), camping is NOT safe for non-whites. there is just a whole host of negative assumptions about a black person out of his/her 'place', and a few decades ago, violent confrontations frequently followed those assumptions.

I am a 50ish year young black male and I love the outdoors! My lifelong passion and hobbies evolve around doing outdoor adventures . I grew up in the city but my mother came from the deep south where she grew up" deep in the woods' (as she called it). She would take us there on summer vacations and it was so much fun.. like stepping back 100 yrs in time on a rural southern far. I would tag along with my uncles who took me on wagon rides, fishing, hunting, and around the big farm.. It was fun for me of course but I also understood black people of past times lived and worked without the conveniences we have today. I understand past generations of black people didn't have the leisure time that their white counterparts had to camp, hike, backpack in the outdoors.. My love for the outdoors continued after returning from my grandparents farm to the city as I (and hundreds of other San Francisco kids) would spend summers at a fabulous Boy's Club Summer Camp in Northern California. every year until I was old enough to work there through high school as a counselor. Believe it or not, hundreds of inner city boys and girls still go there every summer and love it as much as I did in my youth. Thorough out my life I have camped, hiked, backpacked, riden horses, fish, kayak and canoe, swim, rifle and bow hunt. I raised my 2 black sons to do the same and they are at home in the woods as they are in the city. When I moved my family to Georgia, we did many outdoor trips every year throughout the southeast. I hope that other black people don't turn their kids off from exploring new experiences by biasing against camping or other outdoor experiences. .
