Why do people think that in order to be atheist you have to put forth effort. I didn't read the bible and became Atheist through extreme effort. As a African American woman being Christian or religious at all isn't for me. Especially Christianity, I am and the women in this video by some bible standards are not even suppose to be voicing their opinions they are to remain silent not only at church but ALL THE TIME. "Also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly seemingly apparel, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire but by good deeds, as benefits women who profess religion. Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent." So no thanks, I'll keep my atheism and the rights I deserve not just as a woman but as a fucking human being...

The question on whether a god exists or not is not something that comes up in daily interactions in our community. I'm an atheist, and I have a few cousins who are. They've never told me, but I get the gist since they don't attend church and are educated. Any person who doesn't attend church and never refers to a deity by saying "thank God" or "the devil is bad"are more than likely atheist. Atheists just don't have a reason to be candid. So if there's no magic man in the sky, we don't have enough common sense to still understand that we should value each other and promote unification? Does our overcoming our oppressive history have less meaning if there is no heavenly deity? To me, it would equate to an even greater testament of our resilience as a culture. In my opinion, religion is one of the things that continues to keep people of color from reaching their full intellectual and social potential. If one wishes to practice religion, it is surely one's right, but to imply that one cannot be genuinely black without a theistic world view is just plain repugnant.

Non-Black atheist here (Mex-Amer), and reading comments from so many Black atheists makes my heart swell with happiness for you all. I've read of the incredible role that the Black church has played in Black history, and I get it. It was a safe haven for Black people to rejoice, to find comfort, love, friendship, and to strategize (is that a word?) plans for the promulgation of equal civil rights. It was the safest possible haven for enslaved Black people who's camaraderie for one another was the lifeblood of every single person there. As a whole, it was the only "solid" thing they had. At least this is my understanding of it. I could very well be wrong. Anywho, seeing all of your comments makes me proud of each of you. You are so brave. ❤

A big reason for this is that the education system has failed the black community. Education in the sciences for one. Religion is tribal by nature, it takes a strong individual to think outside their peer pressured childhood indoctrinated environment.

Living in Ghana, it's exciting to watch the number of African atheist / freethought groups springing up across the continent. We are even starting to discuss the idea of an African atheist network! The woman on the video who spoke about disconnection from community put her finger on the problem. Fear of loosing family, friends & the possibility of a good job is very real. But in Ghana, our Humanist Association provides an alternative support network for Ghanaian atheists and a space to speak.

I have never been to Europe but I have friends that have told me the same thing. I'm a black atheist and I think one of the main reasons why atheism is so rare in American communities is that in Europe more people know evolution is a fact, that religion is not the solve all end all solution to problems, and quite honestly more progressive culturally. I mean right now in America Tennessee has passed a law requiring schools to teach bible studies in public schools its sad.

I agree with all of your points, as usual. We might have to start being a little more forthright with our beliefs if we're being made to be as rare as this video makes us out to be.

Black Agnostic here. Ever since I started going to College a long time ago, I've started to develop an open mind and thinking critically about a lot of things. Reading the Bible also got me to question God's existence as well as learning about other religions. Those things just got me to feel doubtful about my faith. I believe there are plenty of black people who are either agnostics, atheists, or spiritual but not religious; they just fear too much about making it obvious to their family and friends. Luckily, I live in WA, which is considered to be one of the least religious states in the country. Oh and Morgan Freeman is an Atheist, and Neil Degrasse Tyson is an Agnostic.

No the black spiritual but not religious people feel free and proud to say their beliefs out loud all the time lol. Just like the black Muslims. Believing in a different God is less worst than believing in no God to them. By their logic "at least Spiritual people and Muslims still believe in a God unlike you".

In the words of Greydon Square: "In lyrical debate, Imma throw everything plus the sink I’m a black atheist and there’s more of us then you think Whadja think? That I would just sit up and just let you cheat? Never as long as there’s a beat and a single breath in me. Imma keep attacking, every religious faction Every single section, If I didn’t mention yours Every missed rapture, every single infection If I fail to mention yours then you’ll get it next then."

Black folks beat "blackness" into each other even it's misguided or carrying negative traits. Now it's so bad that non blacks think it's ok to stereotype a black person based on things like food, speech patterns, religion etc because of the way the louder segments of black culture have pigeonholed black experience

I'm a proud Atheist living in the Caribbean, I was born and raised, and indoctrinated into Christianity from Childhood, And I believed for a long time, but after doing my own research and reading the Bible, I have gotten new information That showed me something different from just mere faith, if religion, not just Christianity, if any religion was true, if Religion was good, we Africans would not be allowed so much of it. Faith would not be necessary, if God's existence were a proven fact of reality, if the only way you can accept an assertion Is by faith, Then you're admitting that the assertion cannot be taken on it's own merits. if something is true, we don't summon or conjured up faith, Instead, we use reason and logic to prove it. with faith you don't have to use your cognitive Skills, you can just say I believe, Truth does not ask to be believed, it ask to be tested.

I never believed in this human fantasy of a God. Had two strokes and I didn’t once think of anything except getting to the hospital and I’m ok. She said we survived all that hardship, my question is why did your God put us in that hardship when so many blacks believe in God?
@splam11 жыл бұрын
"...a spiritual being has helped us since the beginning of time, from slavery... civil rights. We survived so much hardship, that we know on our own, we couldn't have done it on our own." So this god creates and advocates slavery and then helps them out of it, what a great guy.
