In real life, he did cut off his cast with a pair of shears. All the cooks and support staff piled onto vehicles too and went out. If you read the book there were many of the young rangers questioning why they even joined during this. At least they saddled up. Some like Macejunas, a delta operator, and others were fucking warriors though. MAD respect to all.

@@Potnoodle1978 That surprises me. I joined the Army about 8 months before Somolia and any condition that necessitated an inhaler was a bar to enlistment. If you developed a condition that required one you would be chaptered out as far as I remember.

The recruiters played a little game of "Do you want to join the army son?" Well then, sign here. They did it with me. I'm not mad. I got what I asked for and I'm glad I did it. But, yeah. Inhalers were a thing. Again. Waiverland precludes all things. Just going off what I saw in that era.

I actually served with "Thomas" from this scene, his real name is not Thomas, it was changed. In speaking with him & others, he said that he didn't want to go back out there, no one did, but they all went back out. It wasn't that dramatic. All of those guys performed incredible & served our country exceptionally well.....

One delta operator, Matt Rierson, went back out 4-5 times. He would grab ammo, get reinforcements, load up on vics and get back into the fight. He survived the day, but he was hit by a mortar round on base two-three days later. He was the only one they could hold a funeral for because the rest were buried back in the states. He went back into that hell over and over again for his boys.

Having read Captain Struecker' book, Thomas was in reality much older and just had a child. He still went to Jeff for comfort and told him his reservations but went in again anyway.

Although it’s a movie people need to realize little moments whether it’s to this magnitude or not happen everyday. I get why some have a negative outlook on the military whether US or any military around the world. But think of these men as everyday people. They become your friends, brothers, sisters, family. Just like childhood friends, classmates, teammates, etc. Wouldn’t you fight for them when things went bad?

This guy afraid to go back out is more common than you realize. It would of been more realistic to have this guy NOT go back out. Not everyone is cut out for combat despite the best training in the world. Not everyone can handle the randomness of mortars being dropped in your position. Or having to violate the ROE in a zone.

I developed asthma in the Marines almost died two times trying to hide it. Finally my buddy told me he wasn’t gunna have me die on him in his barracks room. I owe everything to him. I eventually got out with a 1 Alpha for re-enlistment. I didn’t re-enlist for obvious reasons. But I’m glad I never quit and would have died before I ever did. Semper fi do or die. Rangers get in the way!

This is what made it so scary for me to one day realize to go war when I joined the army . Thank Jesus Christ I didn’t have to get traumatized that way. But these guys didn’t have that luxury that I did being in the national guard . These guys had to finish it and see it till the end . What’s so frightening to me is thinking of my family broken apart from my death . Can’t imagine what would happen to them without me

"Max out on ammo and grenades" that line has always confused me. Was he telling them to grab the max number they'd usually be assigned for standard issue purposes, like 6 magazines and however many grenades? Or did he mean that they should drop *every* piece of non-essential equipment they might otherwise be carrying in their load out and load up with as many grenades and magazines as they could physically carry, even if it was 10x the normal amount?
