Hey Y'all
In this video I'm putting together a black iron pipe plant hanging rail for Jessicas window greenhouse. However the tips and information Ive included will help you with any and all black iron pipe projects. Ive used this material for shelves, curtain rods, and hand rails. I hope by the end you are feeling inspired and equipped to make your own iron pipe creations.

The Home Depot will cut your pipes to size and thread the ends for you for free, Miah. If they say that they don’t do that, find the store manager. When my husband built me my hanging rack for my cast iron pans, he asked our Home Depot (Texas) to cut and re-thread some iron gas pipe for us and he was told that they don’t do that; but he knows better. He told the guy “Yes, you do!” Of course he argued back that he would know if they did that but my husband insisted. The little worker guy got in a huff and went and brought his supervisor over to tell my husband that they don’t do that at Home Depot; but to his chagrin, when my husband asked the supervisor to cut and re-thread his pipe, the guy said “SURE! Come on back here!” Home Depot is a national chain and as such, they should have the same services at each store. You just have to talk to the right person in the store.

Yeah, but going somewhere small, you’re more likely to have a better level of quality to the job done. Even if you have to pay a little.

I have noticed the shelves in the house and I was wondering where you got those. They look great. I should have known that they were custom Jeremiah shelves. Now that I have seen how it’s done, I can think of all kinds of projects I could do with that kind of piping. Thank you so much for showing us how to use it. I can’t wait to see what you do with the mosaic table top. Miah, you are a natural teacher. You think things out so clearly and logically and present the steps in such a way that each project is doable even for an old lady like me. Thank you so much. I am going to use this to make a hand rail for the stairs going up to my attic. The studs are too far apart for any pre made railing system all of the custom railing ideas stick out too far and would make it impossible to move things up the narrow staircase. I confess that I started watching your videos because I liked you as a person and I wanted to be supportive. I really wasn’t expecting you to cover any projects that I would have a use for, let alone be capable of doing. Boy did you surprise me!!! I have learned so much from you all ready and even if I don’t have a need for exactly the project you are doing. I am able to think of several projects that I do need to do that use the skills that I just learned from you. I love you!!! Also, you are an awesome dad! The kayaks for the boys to go on the pond was a fabulous idea. I wish I was one of your kids. Could you find a use for a 63 year old grandmother who likes to fish?

Man they should make a non threaded tee so you could buy a bigger size and just pass the pipe thru it. Do they make anything like that? Like a hanger for pipe. Just my female brain at work. At our house, a job's difficulty is measured by the number of trips to the hardware store required. Minimum on any job is two. It's not really a hard job until more than five trips are required. Hubby will say, "I don't know babe, that looks like a six trip job to me."

Amazing detail and step by step process.! I have NEVER heard and seen a project explained so clearly. I really understood the value of prep work when I had to return a 1988 GMC tailgate this week to Amazon. The paperwork alone was daunting, but local suppliers are the best (salvage yards don't carry my truck parts any more). Thanks for the instruction like a boss! ❤️🌹🙏🥰👀

When you started your channel I wasn’t sure if it would be content that would be of interest to me but I wanted to support you since I’ve been a longtime follower of Roots and Refuge. I have to say that not only is the content interesting, I’m learning a lot. You explain things in a way that someone like me can understand. My husband has always done these types of things and I have very little knowledge or experience with any of it. You do it in a way that doesn’t make me feel intimidated. I really appreciate that so much. You and Jess are awesome people and are very talented at what you are doing.

Miah, you do a great job explaining every project. Showing what you use, where you may find the items.. mentioning that there might be different names for the same item needed- all in all great tutorials each week. I don't have the means to do these projects but still enjoy the videos and creativeness. And it gets my wheels turning for possible future projects (for my husband to do of course LOL) So glad you took that leap and started a workshop channel. It compliments Roots and Refuge so well :D . I've loved your black iron pipe work since the first time you guys showed it! It exudes beauty and strength! Those shelving units are "to die for"! I doubt I can do it myself, but I'd like to try. I'll do as you advise: plan and source parts and labor ahead of build. The detail and care you showed in making this video is so very appreciated. Showing the pieces on HD website is really awesome! I love the draw-over-photo tool you used. Discussion of material and labor sourcing are certainly words to the wise (and me)! I'd love for you to do a video this detailed on a shelf project, like the shelves in your home. I was surprised (and grateful) at how difficult the hanging rack is; the finished project appears deceptively simple, as I've never worked with iron pipe. I'm hoping that the shelves would be something a careful beginner could manage. Thank you, Miah, for sharing your hard work, tips, and advice! Good health and happiness to you and your family, always!

Great video explaining the different connections and how they go together. I am a retired industrial maintenance electrician and have done many projects, more with galvanized pipe instead of black pipe, but with plenty of cutting and threading and bending. For what you probably do with the black pipe projects, you could get a hand threader for around $50 which harbor freight carries and a pipe cutter for around $15 and although not as fast as a pipe cutting/threading machine which costs several thousands of dollars, and save you on gas going back to the hardware store to make a correction. Enjoy your videos.

HI MIAH, something that I have seen over and over and over again in "build" videos is the speaker thinking we know stuff we don't. The biggest thing missing is the viewer's simple knowledge and understanding of basics. That way can work out how to build relevant and empowering things in our own, personal, not being watched lives. WE DON'T ALL UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE POWER TOOLS AND HARDWARE EQUIPMENT, EVEN THE BASICS. It would be VERY helpful to people like me if you took advantage of your unique ability to communicate and taught try-hards like me simple understanding of them. 2-3 MIN SHORT 1 SUBJECT VIDEOS, WE NEED DOZENS AND DOZENS OF THEM. OR SHORT ADD ONS TO ANY VIDEOS. You know "What Drill Bits Do What...For the Dummies", "Idiots Guide to Hammering a Nail" (I'm not kidding), "Why some Hammers have Balls and Others Don't" Ooops too far! Sorry I'm Aussie... HOW AND WHAT WOULD BE EFFECTIVE? Well just chat to us as if your teaching Jess or the kids how to do stuff. FOR EXAMPLE: I'm 62 and I have never learned: WHAT THE NUMBERS ON A DRILL ARE FOR HOW TO HOLD A HAMMER TO GET NAILS IN PROPERLY HOW TO USE A CHAIN SAW (too scary, 5 years still in the box) HOW TO USE A ROUTER (Ditto) HOW TO USE A CIRCULAR SAW, ANGLE GRINDER, HANDSAW, DROP SAW WITHOUT MAIMING YOURSELF WHAT DRILL BITS, HOLE BITS, MASONRY BITS, WOOD BITS, BASICALLY ANYTHING YOU CAN STICK IN A DRILL, ARE FOR HOW TO BUILD SQUARE, STRAIGHT OR LEVEL GARDEN BEDS, BOXES, OR STRUCTURE, ANYTHING, WHEN YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN ETC - You know the drill... Bless you and yours heaps.
