Table Legs and Water Lines (Mosaic Table Build Part 1)

Hey everyone,
In this video we start on getting Jessicas window greenhouse finished up and ready for spring seed starting. We begin on the mosaic table by getting the legs built and painted and we end with running some pex water lines and installing a water tap for inside. I'd say it's the perfect time for it to be completed. Its amazing how many of God's workings come together and years from when it started...and comes full circle! I recommend plain old glass over resin or plexiglass. I have sidelights on both sides of my front door on an older house. When my eldest son was about 12, he smacked a fly on the sidelight right by the door knob and deadbolt and broke the glass and miraculously didn’t cut himself. My distinctly unhandy father came and helped glaze in a new pane of glass, but the original had been trimmed in with wood molding. I had the house resided a few years later and asked for the poorly glazed pane to be fitted so it matched the rest of the sidelights. My very experienced contractor broke the pane of glass while installing it, so replaced it with plexiglass. Our dog at that time (a lab mix) came and went through the front door and scratched at that pane of plexiglass when he wanted in. In a few months, the plexiglass was irrevocably scratched. I replaced it with glass and it was fine. A coat of resin may be a good idea, but a protective glass top may be the best long term option, because it is recyclable if it gets broken or ruined and will be mostly clear even if it has scratches and a man on a galloping horse won’t notice even if it is broken. A layer of epoxy could be polished if it gets knickers, so it’s a serious hardworking surface.

Love that you spent time thinking about the best way to set up the table and considered the necessary precautions to prevent damage. What a great idea to use as a potting table with a cover so it can really be appreciated and enjoyed. Brings even more beauty to the greenhouse, a place full of life. Miah, I teach stained glass, glass jewelry, and mosaic classes. We no longer use resins. There is no resin that does not yellow over time in UV exposure (no matter what they say). It's just not worth it. Mosaics have lasted for thousands of years, even under foot. Your plexiglass will protect from scratching, inevitable with using soils or potting media. It will also scratch over time, but is easily replaced. Also, I highly recommend Impregnator 511 as your grout sealer. It is oil based and penetrates well, but it is a drying oil for lasting protection. We even use it on mosaic stones in gardens.

This is 100% true . I resined a table and it was perfectly fine for several years but overtime it has yellowed in the sunlight through a window.

I want to third this comment. I have done resin counters and inevitably something happens, it's so much easier to replace a sheet of plexiglass than to repair old resin.

Hello Miah. I've been a Root & Refuge viewer for years, which is where I picked up the idea that maybe you can help me be more organized, disciplined and focused with my projects. So here I am! Ready to learn. Like Jess, I'm a gardener, but I'm also a homeowner and am looking forward to several remodeling projects, some of them quite extensive, for my nearly 100 year old house. My main problem is becoming overwhelmed by the amount of stuff that needs to get done. I know you also have some huge goals for the development of your property. I'm hoping I can learn from your example of how to undertake and accomplish substantial goals in a sane way by being disciplined about process. How to proceed from conception to design and planning to build. How to define a manageably-sized project and stay focused on it until completion. This all sounds like pretty basic stuff now that I've just written it out, but that's what I need reinforced for me in order to keep from becoming overwhelmed, frantic, and ultimately paralyzed - game over, nothing accomplished. As I began watching this first video I worried I wasn't going to find what I was seeking when I listened to your very fast-paced introduction. I have to say, it did not help me feel calm. But I figured you might have just been nervous, so I kept watching. I loved seeing your fast-forward pre-job cleanup. It emphasized for me the importance of a tidy work space - for focus, safety, calm and room to work. After that, your speaking pace was slower and more relaxed, which I much appreciated. I liked hearing about the order in which you planned to work on the various things, and why. I liked the fast-forward of the leg assembly. I liked hearing you plan for the table top, and seeing you stop before beginning to build it. The latter emphasized for me that planning is a task in itself, something to be satisfied in accomplishing, without any need to rush into building. This helps me not have unrealistic time goals. Nice. All in all, this first video really delivered what I was after. For that I am very grateful (because I really do need help). Keep 'em coming!

It was funny when you said it was too cold at 40 degrees. The ice storm to Springfield Oregon where I live and my power (and heat) was out for 8 days. My house read a consistant 40 degrees. And I agree with you, 40 degrees is SO COLD. Especially when your in it 24/7 for 8 days. My bones hurt thouroughly. When The power company rolled up on the 9th day. I didnt know whether to cry or dance. Praise the Lord for His sustaining strength.

Reach out to Stone Coat resin and they will point you in the right direction with the resin. it’s really easy to work with and have used it myself for art projects. Also if you mess up you sand it wipe it with alcohol and it’s like glass. If you mess up big you sand it and do a recoat. Love the product hope this helps. Everything looks beautiful 💚

Without knowing the significance of the mosaic table top, it and the stained glass windows have always been my favorite parts of the greenhouse. I know you will both be very happy for the top to become a table that is a beautiful reminder of loved family members. 💕💕💕💕 I have seen some videos lately of a home inspector in Texas, That ain’t Right (I think it’s the name since that’s what he says) and he uses a gadget that shows where heat loss is happening. I don’t have any idea what it’s called but if the things you are planning to do still don’t solve the problem, that thing might help. It’s about the size of a cellphone but hopefully not as expensive!

WARNING Miah I’d always stay with the plexiglass - Resin will yellow over time and crack With the environment changes in a greenhouse all the dirt & water 😜 it does scratch fairly easily & can be reheated to remeld but it it’s a pain. Plexi can just be replaced when needs a refresh. 👍🏼

Beautiful work! One idea for the heat loss would be to put a second layer of glazing on the ceiling. You have exposed rafters, which means attaching another clear layer to the undersides of them would be pretty easy. Maybe start with cheap dropcloth plastic to see the effect, then a nicer-looking poly or acrylic if it works as you want. But it should give you a nice air gap between the layers which should insulate better than the single-layer roof (even if it's a single layer of multi-layer poly).

We got some wet look sealant for our mosaic, just seals the grout and natural stone to look wet.

There are foam inserts that should match the ribs on those roof panels. They fit snug in there to insulate and are the shape for easy install. They make them for the eve and the ridge.

Could some of the heat loss be from the door insert? They are typically double paned with argon gas to make them insulated. I love the table. It's one of a kind. Just like Jess

Woohoo Maih! Jess is going to be so happy🥰. Suggestion for you, I know what purple plumbers glue is, but how many ppl don't? I know the difference between PVC ( poly-vinyl-chloride) and PEX pipe is, how many don't? It may be helpful for you to explain what you're doing and why. A lot of folks just don't know. It is your workshop after all. 🤗 PS. I am a woman that's married to a very handy man ( much like you) which is how I've gained the knowledge I have.

Hey, this might be a bit of overkill, but if you want to figure out all where heat would be escaping you could use use some kind of fogger machine and let it fill the greenhouse up and then just watch from the outside all the places the fog would be escaping. No idea how effective that would be but an idea lol.

Good video Miah! I can't help but wonder if ceiling fan to force the heat down would not help quite a lot...it's a big space. I do like the double layered roofing material with air space idea - what about cutting strips of roofing material or clear plexiglass to fit between the rafters and hold them up with strips of boards painted black? It will ensure the visual affect inside that way and avoid having to modify outside. Kinda like putting up insulation but with air. Either way I am thinking you may not need as much cloth for the roof in summer.

Did you run all this waterline for the 'garden/farm stuff' from the well dug for the house? Or did you have 2 separate wells dug, 2 pumps and 2 pressure tanks, etc? Just curious how that initial set up is for you guys and how pressure holds with it all. Thanks!! I love the handy videos J!! FYI - I was actually wondering how you ran that line in the greenhouse when I watched Jess's vlog yesterday!! Perfect timing! (like, literally, I was pausing and rewinding to see if I could see the line/connection under that shelf leg).
