I had black locust for firewood a couple years ago. It burns really hot. On the coldest days I had to crack open a window when I let it get too hot. Good video.

Yes, this species surprises people. The roll-off driver who delivers my 6 cord loads has a homemade wood stove at his shop and he related his story to me about throwing some locust in and the heat pumping out from it! Thanks again

Morning Anthony, good info in the video , nice to see a business owner who knows his product . If customers ask questions, you can provide answers instead of saying, “it’s wood, it all burns”. Yeah those grubs are great as bait. Have a good weekend, Tight Lines!

Good morning and thank you. The customers love the ID when I deliver. I've got 2 or 3 load of black locust, hopefully I get some grubs for Labou4 Day weekend!

Black locust is such a wonderful wood for tools handles, fence posts, or any outdoor structures. I like this series. I’m a new subscriber in NB 🇨🇦

Much appreciated! Yes, this type of wood has great uses and longevity in and out od the wood stove. I had hoped to do more tree species ID videos last year, I will definitely cover them this year

We have a bunch of Locust trees in our neighborhood (W. NY state), and I think they must be the hybrid species you mentioned as they have no thorns. LOVE when people trim limbs and branches off- that stuff is my favorite firewood! Very distinctive wood- the sapwood is a bright lime yellow, with a pretty honey brown heartwood. Hard as a rock, but splits fairly easily. Burns slow with relatively little flames or smoke, and leaves a gorgeous bed of hot long lasting coals behind. My guess is that it's some kind of Honey Locust, but nobody I talk to seems to know exactly what it is. That, and Silver Maple are my most common free "woodhound" scores, as those were planted all over the place when the neighborhood was first developed. Many are massive now. I just burn in a wood grill for cooking and recreational fires, so btu content isn't a major concern for me. So that soft maple is good stuff! Same for the odd poplar, basswood, cottonwood, or spruce score. I reserve all that latter for the "sittin around" fires, or for making kindling.

Every wood has a purpose. Even box elder branches are good for packing down easily in the truck when they arr cut and removed 🤣

Great information, Anthony. I didn't think Southern Ontario had much in the way of black locust trees. Same for hickory.
@OntarioFirewoodResource3 жыл бұрын
Not many overall, less there's a lot less hickory than locust. I always manage to get a big load in every now and then

@@OntarioFirewoodResource No, this is an important service. A lot of viewers like me are getting an education we otherwise wouldn't have. You have a way of explaining it easily. In fact, I'm saving this video for future reference. Knowing the species at a glance is needed for business.
@OntarioFirewoodResource3 жыл бұрын
Actually I'm making these ID videos to attract a wider range of viewers as it seems like there's only a small few relatively that are exclusively into firewood. I wish I was more suited for video work, but it is what it is

You're doing a disservice to the region of Ontario by not mentioning the fact black locust is invasive to Ontario. If you can convince people to use black locust as firewood while seeking out trees to remove from the environment, rather than cultivate it, it would go a long way in combating invasives.
@OntarioFirewoodResourceАй бұрын
Fair enough. This video is not about covering every base, there is a lot of technical knowledge of identifying trees that I do not know. This is just the basics.

I had a drone, but it fell in the Muskoka River after making contact with the best tree in my tree ID video. It wss free so no money lost, amazon said they didnt deliver it and sent me a refund 🤣 oh well, it ducked anyway. Have you seen my nature walk tree ID videos? I have drone footage on my 2021 video.
