My childhood game was Half-Life 2, it might be the earliest and first pc game I ever played... I still use the 19 year old steam account my dad created just to play it when steam was new and to this day it is my favorite game of all time! When Half Life Alyx was announced in 2020 it literally was a religious experience for me with tears and shock, so I'm excited to see you play the series. Also it warmed my heart to hear you have a similar story with your dad and half life, it really is an amazing and revolutionary series for generations

I was quite similar when I was a kid. Half Life I believe was my dad's game on PS2 but I watched my brother and sister playing it. Used to love it as a kid, so I look forward to reliving memories watching this playthrough!

I wish my dad still liked gaming when games like DOOM and Half Life were out. He's 77 and had a couple Ataris, a pong console, and several real early PC games but seemed to get too caught up in work right around the time I started gaming as a kid, so we never overlapped in that interest.

Gordon wore an HEV suit to protect himself from radiation, but there is a limit to the dose of radiation that any protective suit can withstand and the accident in the anti-mass spectrometer chamber opened a dimensional rift and as a result, exposed Freeman at a level of radiation that would kill him instantly. Yet, Gordon is still alive. Hence the title of the game of which Black Mesa is a remake, Half-Life, a reference both to the decay time of a radioactive element and to Schrödinger's cat paradox. Basically, Gordon is both alive and dead.

So glad to see and watch someone playing this gem for the first time 😄Half Life is very nostalgic and important game for me too, it wasnt among the very first games I played, but it was one of those games that blew my mind in 1998. It instantly made FPS games that had became before it seem very simple and archaic. Though these for those that didnt ever play the original, I definitely recommend playing Black Mesa instead because it had so much more detail and dialogue in it. The original HL had scarier atmosphere though.

Once you've finished Black Mesa, you should give Black Mesa Blue Shift a try. It's the DLC addon made by the same developers where you play as a security guard. It's about half way finished but the currently released 5 chapters are mindblowing.

13:46 This game was a remake from the ground up, I followed its development for years back in the day it was always a bugbear and a pet peeve that people kept calling it a “remaster” or an “overhaul” or “Half Life in HD graphics” when it wasn’t any of those things. In fact the reason the remake was made was Valve releasing a direct copy paste port of Half Life into the Source engine called Half Life Source, it was the most disappointing port of a game ever, just the textures from GoldSource imported into Source, and it was buggy and looked awful. So given that by its name it was touted as being a Half Life upgrade of sorts, two separate mod teams started working separately on a complete remake project of Half Life in the Source engine. It was first announced in 2004 and first released as a Half Life 2 mod containing the Earth bound chapters in 2012, yep the game was in development for 8 years! The dev team weren’t doing it as a profession, just wholly in their spare time. And everyone was stunned it looked as good as it did for a Half Life 2 mod. It was then given a Steam release in 2015 and that finally added the Xen chapters to the game. But to your point. The game is exactly the same story as the original Half Life, same dialogue with a bit more on top. Almost nothing else is just a “port” or something. Everything you see was built in Source from scratch. New voice actors were hired, Kevin Sisk for the security guards (hired because he LITERALLY no joke has a natural Barney Calhoun voice) and Mike Hillard for scientists (who was hired because he did a dead on impression of Dr Kleiner!) Music’s new. Puzzles have been either added or kept and just made a tad more challenging for a modern gaming perspective. Things that didn’t make too much logical sense in terms of environment were removed or change to look more realistic I guess. And I know Half Life like the back of my hand, not even a massive gamer, only play on my PC once a week or so, but I’ve always come back to Half Life and played it once in a while. I spent hours and hours and hours on my Dad’s PS2 playing the console port back in the day I know every line, practically all of the lore, most of the history. On another note, so cool that you too say it was watching your Dad play it that got you into gaming. Literally same deal for me. My Dad isn’t a big gamer though, hasn’t been for years.

Hello. A great ending, to a great game. Fun facts. Black Mesa mentioned in the ending Credits, is the Company you work for in Half-Life, the bigger more popular game from Valve, and was a confirmation that the two games take place in the same universe. Second, I believe this was the first game to ever made the End Credits fun. Most other games before this had the usual, black boring normal credits like movies. This was the game, I believe, that started the trend of making Credits actually fun. All good things come to an end, that ending is something else! That Black Mesa reference from Half-Life though!! That is the timeline of game releases. Blue shift takes place before opposing force, half-life source is a terrible remake of the original HL that you should never play and so takes place at the same time as original HL, and black mesa isn't canon since it wasn't directed by Valve. Also Half-life Alyx takes place before HL2. You will hear about Aperture in Episode 2, and maybe Alyx Half-Life 1 Half-Life: Opposing Force Half-Life: Blue Shift Half-Life 2 Half-Life 2: Episode 1 & 2 Portal 1 & 2 Black Mesa Half-Life: Alyx.

Barney is the guard you see banging on a door at 3:17 in this video. If you want more of his adventures in Black Mesa, you'll either need to play Half Life: Blue Shift, one of the expansions for Half Life, or play Black Mesa: Blue Shift, a free mod for Black Mesa that you can get on the Steam Workshop. It's only about half done though, it doesn't have the final chapters yet. (Also, in the original Half Life, all the security guards had the same face and voice, and were all nicknamed 'Barney'. Half Life 2 turned the generic Barney into an actual character with the same voice actor, which the Black Mesa voice actor is imitating. That's why the guards all sound like Barney. There were 4 different scientist models but they all had the same voice which was Kleiner's voice, which is why the Black Mesa scientists all sound like him.) 9:45 On your ride to work, look over to your left just as you get to the room with the leaking nuclear waste. G-Man will be in a opposite train. 16:01 Before getting the HEV suit, keep going left. Eventually you’ll find G-Man arguing with a scientist in a adjoining room. 1:09:24 Missed seen the G-Man, In the room with some houndeyes, look up as you enter and he’ll be watching Gordon. 2:27:50 A businessman’s natural environment. Near the end of this chapter, before you go into the room where you make the jump to the ladder in the elevator shaft, look to your right through a door’s window. G-Man will walk into shot and then leave. Had you stand there in front of the Exit door longer you WOULD had seen the G-Man walking by. 2:45:08 Missed see G-Man, After you save (or don’t) the scientists from the turrets in the water, look up before you deal with the trip-mine. He will be standing on a catwalk.
