I really didn't expect so many people to misunderstand this: It was spoiled for me that Portal and Half-Life were connected WAY before HL2: Episode 2. Not by mentioning "Aperture Labs", just a constant stream of "HL and Portal are connected!!/HL and Portal are in the same universe!" over and over again. So yes, I remember clearly the moment in HL2: Episode 2 where Kleiner name dropped Aperture as I bring it up in this video. At that time though, I did not know what Aperture related to. Getting a lot of people trying to correct me on what I consider a spoiler...which is odd. Because if I think something is a spoiler, then it's a spoiler...for me. Maybe not for you, but considering I'm playing these games blind, my definition of a spoiler is probably more strict than yours. Please do enjoy the playthrough, it's a lot of fun and I can see why Portal is so dearly loved, it's an absolute joy. Please do not spoil things, or I'll throw you in the incinerator and unleash the neurotoxin.

A fun little fact: The robot dragging you back in the final cutscene wasn't there originally. Initially, it just showed you laying there among the wreckage. They edited it in a patch in the lead-up to releasing Portal 2, basically retconning the ending to be what they needed for the sequel
@JeffarryLounder2 жыл бұрын

Other fun fact... In the developer commentary (or was it on IGN's devs react to speedruns video or somewhere else, I can't remember anymore) the developers say that the idea of that party escort robot dragging you back to the facility was floating around even during the development, but it was scrapped because it left sour taste to the ending, especially because they were not sure at point if there's even going to be a sequel.

The story of how this game came to be is quite interesting, the idea of it started it's life as an indie game called Narbacular Drop developed by students at the DigiPen institute of Technology in Washington (state). Valve is based in Seattle and like to go to events where students from around the area go to show off their projects, one such event is held by DigiPen each year and in 2005 one group of students there was showing off Narbacular Drop which was a puzzle game set in a hellscape world where you had to make it through a dungeon by placing an orange and blue portal. When Robin Walker who was a developer at valve came by he immediately got interested in the game and later asked the students to come by valve's offices to give a presentation on it mainly so that they could give some advice for the students. That presentation was given for among others Gabe Newell (co-founder and president of valve) who was so impressed with the project that he hired them on the spot essentially. Portal was then made by a relatively small team who started by only working on the gameplay of it before bringing on Marc Laidlaw (main writer for half life until he left the company in 2016) to write the story, creating the game you have now played. It was first released as part of the orange box which was a collection of Half life 2 (+the episodes), Team Fortress 2 and Portal for the Xbox 360, Windows and later the PlayStation 3 in 2007. Portal and the orange box as a whole proved to be a huge success and development for a sequel started quite quickly (but you'll have to see for yourself how that sequel turned out to be in Portal 2).
@leplubodeslapin2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your message. I think it's important to know the context to understand why it's totally ok that this game is quite short. The orange box was a normal-prized game that included 5 games, which is insane. There were also plans for a "Black Box" initially, including only the 3 new releases (HL2:EP2, TF2 and Portal) but Valve ended up releasing only the orange box, which already was 300% worth it for anyone. Looking forward to watch Mapo's discovery of Portal 2 :)

He did exactly what the developers wanted in that playground, he played around on the seesaw. Because of this he solved the later puzzle much faster. He was not better at shooting, puzzles, parkour, or playing in general, because as you said there is no better way to play a game. What he did do well was he learnt how to play much faster because he allowed himself to play around and become immersed in the game. He didn't aim for a best playthrough, instead he did what felt natural to him. Which just happened to be what the developers had intended in the first place.

I don't think the player character's name and hometown are classified. That would imply that the player character is special in some way. I think those [insert name/hometown here] voice lines are supposed to indicate that they couldn't be bothered, because you are NOT special. You are just a random test subject (among: many? hundreds? thousands?), and they don't care about any of you enough to even fill in the personal details. I think the [insert hometown here] bit has an extra layer to it because I think the joke and implication is that no matter what your hometown is, the portal gun is still worth more than all of the combined incomes of that town. Love this game's humor! Love your content too, keep it up!

From Half-Life Wiki: The Long Fall Boot is a boot used by Aperture Science to prevent Test Subjects from inadvertently damaging the Portal Device while falling to their death. It does this by lessening the impact of falls, thus also preventing injury to test subjects.

"my mind is an enigma" Seriously some of the things you think up I just shake my head and wonder how you ever thought that was going to work. But honestly that sort of thing is probably why you're fun to watch. I think a lot of video games either hold our hand the whole time or just reward trying random things that don't necessarily make sense. It isn't often that you get a game that legitimately just involves observation, physics and just thinking things through like this game does.

The bit where you try to jam the cube through the hole instead of shooting a portal onto the other side of the hole and just walking through with the cube is quite possibly the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Especially when you then shoot a portal through the hole while trying to shoot a portal close to the hole to nudge the cube through. I do hope you'll follow up with Portal 2 soon!

Btw, behind the scenes info: Portal was made by Digipen students. While at Digipen, they made a game called Narbacular Drop (you can get that one for free) which did the idea of portal mechanics. Gabe Newell saw it, thought it was neat, hired the students that made it, and told them "make whatever you want". And so they made Portal, which was originally released as an extra thing in Orange Box. After most people bought Orange Box just to get Portal, it got its own separate release.

Fun fact; The ending of the game was retconned before the announcement of Portal 2 as it was orignally just a self-contained story. Originally the party escort associate didn´t drag you away at the end and it just transitioned over into the cake sequence. Also the login credentials that you found earlier in the playthrough were added in an update around this time and could be used to access a website related to an ARG which eventually teased the announcement of the sequel.

I knew it couldn't be the "right" way to do it but I didn't think much of it and just carried on.

@@himikebye While it takes more intuition than many other parts of the game, I think that's too big of a cop-out for a game so famous for its subtle way of guiding the player. Maybe have the tube cracked a little bit with gas effects coming out of it to suggest that it can be cracked further.

While there may be other games with a higher production quality, the first Portal is one of the only games I would call a perfect game. It is such a tight experience, a game that by playing you can feel how much the developers put their soul into it, it feels that there is not a single pixel wasted anywhere, like each one was lovingly placed down.
@enotsnavdier68672 жыл бұрын
I'd say the fight against GlaDos holds it back from being g perfect. The fight is kinda lame as is, but from what is there, there was a ton of potential for a better fight imo.

I wouldn't call Portal 1 perfect, given I'd say it's worse than Portal 2. Portal 1's biggest problem is that the whole game feels like 1 big tutorial. By the time the game stops teaching you its mechanics, you're almost done. When I beat Glados, my reaction was "Wait, is that it?". Portal 1 feels like a demo for Portal 2.

After hearing about it for so many years, It's great finally having seen it for myself, and I couldn't have asked for a better guide than you. Thank you. That first turret accident was particularly hilarious. :D That big room puzzle you began at 2:13:45 is a perfect example of the mistakes I too would be doing, if given a tool as powerful as the portal gun, and no instructions on the nature of the puzzle. I would overthink the hell out of it, so I would likely have been stuck on quite a few of the puzzles in this game, which makes your blind experience all the more impressive.
