Join me as I contour the Black Mountains at the base of the Hatterall Ridge in search of a photograph. The Contour is amazing and the photograph inspiring as Longtown later snakes off into the distance with the Black Mountains, Olchon Valley and Cats Back (Black Hill) in the background. Hike and photo mission complete the adventure makes for a good bivvy as golden hour sees me in through to the night.

It’s been a very long time now that I know how much walking frees our mind, opens our memory, our emotions. And these hiking trails, these routes that we walk , are pieces of our lives. They are the guardians of our friendships, our sorrows, our loyalties, our questions and our resignation. There is of course the richness of the landscapes, all the treasures of nature, but also echoes of what is in ourselves. And in your video I find all these links. 🥾🧡 Merci Mark.😊

Salut Gaddielle, Je suis content d'avoir de tes nouvelles. I agree walking is an internal channel too without doubt. You've put it so beautifully - they are guardians of our spirit. When I visit paths - like this one they invoke all the treasures. Thank you my friend. See you out there. Mark

Well done! My back yard, living in the city of Hereford. (Evacuee from London during the 1940s Blitz!) I've toured that area many times on my various motorcycles since the 1950s, The Black Mountains and Offa's Dyke are always never far from me, I see them from my bedroom window, and I still take those motorcycle trips, when the Welsh weather permits! At almost 90 years of age, a leisurely motorcycle ride takes the place of countryside walks nowadays! Take care, Mark...😀...😀...!

Thank you for sharing this very timely video Mark! We heard this morning that a close family member has passed due to drugs. My cousin who was my best buddy growing up will likely pass within a few days, also due to drugs. Neither of them were able to overcome their demons. The peace and serenity of this video is quite healing. I was saddened by the neglected dog in the beginning tho. The landscape looks beautifully ethereal in the mist! I do hope that the relationship with your family can someday be repaired. Peace my friend!

Brilliant dogs. Best ever - my best friends too The “Cathedral” on the contour was just so beautiful. A special looking place mate. And the book looks cool - sometimes books like that are priceless!! What a cool Church. Love it how you meet everyone Wonderful little dingle waterfall!! What a pain that you couldn’t immediately get to the photo spot as the light faded. What a splendid landscape Mark, such variety and interest. My dear old ma would describe my walks in the uplands as 'barren' and back then I'd disagree, but as I get older, I increasingly think she had a point. I do like the hills and mountains but certainly where I tend to go, often they are pretty damaged by various means of landscape mismanagement down the years. Where you walked here was far removed from that, with lovely old woods and trees and of course the delightful church at Clodock. The Pilgrim Way....that sounds right up my street. I've followed the British Pilgrimage Trust for quite a bit and have their book, called 'Britain's Pilgrim Places'. I'd dearly love to walk that route sometime. Nice kip spot too, beneath what looked like a hazel. Best wishes, Chris

@@WyeExplorer He said I love you or I like you.. I know a bit of dog and for whatever reason he sensed you .. perhaps from your hand. I was going to ask if you had a dog. But with regard to your leg, can i suggest you look into a thing called a femoral bicep stretch. there are a number of them. but there is some chines guy on youtube who if i recall wore an orange or red shirt during his demonstration of an easy way to do this particular stretch. and if you do not have a dog. Both myself and Fluffy Blue are suggesting that you indeed invest some thought into the idea of having one.. and as fluffy blue said, whatever excuses you have for not having one should be offset against the following list. 1) when you go out and come home a dog thinks you have been gone for their entire lifetime. 2) you don't need to dress a dog. 3) a dog is the most loyal companion that ever there was 4) Dogs have unconditional love, they will love you regardless of a good mood or a bad one 5) dogs are idiots, they make you smile three times a day. 6) Dogs are from an alien planet, they have individual missions to complete on this earth and need humans to assist them. 7) MY friend Gillian had a better list than this, but gillian was right. 8) a female west highland dog is perhaps one of the most clever dogs in the world. 9) You may actually need to buy a new vacume cleaner some day 10) Fluffy Blue said so.

Nice little trek and bivvy Mark. I know the Cat's Back, but not that side of Hatterall Hill really. Terrain you walked in is very similar to the contouring paths over the hill in the Llanthony valley in fact. Yes, contouring the base of a hill often throws up more interesting things than marching over the top. We've got to go both ways of course ! How did you meet Mike Parker, maybe he was researching the book about the Marches you mentioned ? I will look out for that. I've read his book about the public footpath network, so we exchanged a couple of emails about that - he's a nice bloke. Hey, thanks there bro. Glad you liked this one. No no smoked sausage this time. They can be moreish but this was a nice accompaniment. I trust you're well out there - I'll visit soon. I gave some catching up to do. All the best. Mark

Hi there Sarah, yeah it was a awesome little trip. I've put the link to mikes website in the description below the video. Links don't work well on replies. Google doesn't like them for some reason. In the link it links you to purchase options. All the very best - good reading. Mark

Long time subscriber and always good content Mark. Bit worried about the dog mate, you were there so would have a better idea about it's condition, but wouldn't hurt to contact the local RSPCA if you felt it wasn't being looked after.

Hey there Alex, glad you liked this outing mate. Yeah, I'm in two on this one. I can't decide whether it's neglected or not. I mean there was water there etc - it's just a bit dank and dirty. A decent point though. All the best. Mark

Hi Mark. Sorry but I managed to erase the lovely comment you just made on my Alpine video. I was trying echo yours and pin it. Sometimes I feel I'm not safe to be left in charge of a laptop, mate!
