Wow what an amazing day - the people you met, cuppa tea and the map she printed off for you; kindness is everywhere. Grief is a journey I’ve been helping my wife with other last few years as she’s now lost both of her parents. I treasure mine, but know I have that journey ahead of me. Good to hear of Paul as always and your reflection on identity. The Tree - well that has its own story as you say seen empires rise and fall. This was truly a great film, walk and discussion, thanks Mark for taking us along and sharing this with us. ATB Mark.

Hi Mark, just caught up with this one. Its a beautiful area, so green! Even in winter it was so green, cracking weather too. Seeing those dear at the end of that walk, lovely animals what a hi light and way to finish. The ancient abbey was interesting to see, I have never heard of it, amazing that it survived the reformation! How daft being challenged by those bikers when you're outside the boundary of a disused base! Jog on! lol ATB Adam

Hi there Adam. Yes, a fantastic green valley - the start of the Golden Valley. The deer were lovely - doing their thing and alert. Re-the abbey it is a survivor and how interesting is that? I wonder why. As for the bikers it's outside an active base - the SAS base at Pontrilas. They may have been regiment guys filling in time. Who knows? I was still outside the boundary. Well, thanks, my friend. Have a great 2025. Mark

I've done many 'tree pilgrimages' in my time Mark but the proximity of yews to churchyards make them the best trips for me. One memorable one was to the famous yew at Much Marcle in your neck of the woods. I do eat the berries from time to time, they are pleasantly sweet. A few years back, at a churchyard in North Wales, a big old yew had had some of its lower branches sawn up into logs. I thought I'd take one home for the fire but in the end couldn't bring myself to burn it. It still sits on the window bottom at home. Great stuff and a happy New Year, Chris.

I'm sure you have Chris. Yews and churches seem to go like cheese does with biscuits. Yes, I know Much Marcle but have never felt like going to its Yew like I did with this one. I think it's because this one was in the Upper Lugg valley. I shall have to try the berry one day. Nice to hear about the Log - these things do open doors. Many thanks, Chris. Have a great year yourself. Mark

I love a good tree Mark, but oh, that building! Wonderful! And such a beautiful church, what a setting for a fabulous, fabulous tree. When I was at primary school, our sports day was dominated by an amazing giant redwood. They're fascinating, aren't they? And so photogenic. 4 trunks.... wow. I'm surprised there aren't photographers clamouring for access. Such tiny birds in such a huge tree. Great video, beautifully presented! That aside, your comments about grief and identity crisis are so poignant. I think this is possibly your best video. Here's to departed brothers my friend. Sue

It is an incredible veteran this one - 4 trunks speaks of its endurance. Amazing - birds and all. Well, the Yew is about death and life. I only just touched on it Sue - Paul and I stayed together our whole life, had no marriage or children, and lived together. Yeah, it was hyper-grief - tough. Here's to those we love. All the best and depended on. Mark

I’ve yet to give yew berries a try. I don’t fancy killing myself by mistake. It’s always nice to realize you are missing your map before you head out. Clay got himself lost on Christmas Eve. He sent an sos beacon on his SPOT, but the highway was closed for avalanche control. Some ice climbers found him before search and rescue got there, so all was fine in the end. It was a nerve racking few hours though. Beautiful site. I can see why the folks in Harry Potter use them for wands. I don’t think ours get nearly so old here (nor do out buildings).

It would be interesting to know who it was came up with the idea that the yew is 5000 years old. Grossly exaggerated estimates of the ages of yew trees were made in the 1970's by one Allen Meredith who managed to convince David Bellamy of the 'Tree Register' that his calculations were accurate. Subsequently well over a hundred churches hold certificates signed by Bellamy stating that the age of the yew trees in their churchyards pre-date Christianity. But the vast majority of yews were planted at the time of the building of the churches and the creation of the churchyards. They are also linked to early monasticism in Ireland and Wales. And they also were as marker trees for the Anglo-Saxon Hundred courts. The larger tree at Discoed has been estimated at 37ft in circumference so based on a rule of thumb calculation (30 years of growth for each foot of girth) we have an age of 1110 years. But if we plus or minus 5 feet for variation in growth we arrive at an age of between 1260 and 960 years (764AD - 1064AD) Which given that Discoed is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 would link the yew to the known history of the area. Now yews being yews the tree may be older - but some 4000 years older? See Jeremy Harte's on-line article 'How old is that old yew tree'. Also the Ancient Yew Group's website.

Hey mate, you finish off on ‘also.’ I feel you're not so much the teacher - moreover, the discreditor. You take a lot of pride in your intellect and you approach me as if I am a criminal - an ancient tree criminal who does them a disservice. It must be said that the age of a Yew is not calculated by way of the girth alone because its growth rate slows over time. In fact, its growth stops at some point. I said the age may be debatable. Did you not listen? Reading your piece it appears you are a defender of the faith. I’m not speaking of ancient tree faith. I’m speaking of defending the Christian faith through your words. Well, I’m no baddy here and in many circles, the debate is still wide open because Yews are a tricky tree to get your head around. I'm open to the reality of things but more so if respected as a pupil. All the best.
@Wotsitorlabart
@Wotsitorlabart 6 күн бұрын
@WyeExplorer What a bizarre response. I simply queried the supposed age of the yew tree. What has defending Christianity got to do with this? In what way do I think you are an 'ancient tree criminal'? Why would I believe you to be a 'baddy'? In what way does my comment show disrespect towards you? The word 'also' simply linked the two references at the end of my comment - why would it upset you? I am genuinely baffled. I am aware yews are difficult to age but I did state that the method I used was a rule of thumb - hence the plus or minus 150 years. As I said the dates I came up with do marry quite nicely with the village being in the Domesday Book - but it is an educated guess. The supposed 4000 year age however............
@WyeExplorer
@WyeExplorer 6 күн бұрын
@@Wotsitorlabart It's not bizarre at all. Bizarre means strange and there's nothing odd about not resonating with someone's tone - that's life. re - Also - the whole thing was said as a long list (you know, also) - that's how it was delivered and crucially in a way that suggested I was doing it a disservice. Call me sensitive but it was one fact after another to really hit home the point. No mention of the video or any hint of kindness. It was a kind of rout - blew me away mate. As for Christianity, there is a defense there - there's talk of predating and the creation of church yards in relation to the Yew. It could be a fact or a defense of the religion. Who is to say the facts are right? Do you get me? In other words, everything can be questioned. You came at me bro blazing guns and I was going to defend myself because the source of your attack (which is what it was because it was just intellect without empathy) was my video. It's fine to speak our truths but it's good to marry that with an acknowledgment that we're actually speaking to another human. I hope you understand - I mean I didn't know you. Take care.
