Not really from Chinese mythology. It’s from a Chinese author and the whole series surrounding Journey to the West. The actual myth was a bit different and they’re most scattered among ppl and their beliefs. No real myth except the monk

And Dragon Ball was meant to be a funny cartoonish version of this mythology. Even the name "Goku" was a Japanese pronounciation of the name "Wukong". There were many characters in the first Dragon Ball that shared the same names with it. When it got successful the author decided to go separate ways.

Oh wow so many reasons for that. For a long time. Chinese entertainment and games industry have been dominated by a desire for quick bucks amidst China ccp censorship. It is hard to practice artistry in an environment where there is this double force of greed and censorship whammy that potentially kills off any exploration into interesting themes. Even the original TV series for Sun Wu Kong journey to the west was only made because there was a slight relaxation of policies. To risk making a AAA game with the odds stacked against you. In the legend of Wu Kong, there was an Ox Beast who married to a woman who carries a huge fan. The fan is known the blow heavy heat. So in the legend, Wu Kong and the Ox are suppose to be friends (in some legend) and he needed to borrow his wife’s fan to blow these volcanic heat... anyways it’s one of his many adventures...

The Ox King's Wife is known as the Iron Fan Princess. Her well known weapon of choice is the Banana Leaf Fan which the Monkey King (Wukong) borrowed to blow away the flames and heat of a Mountainous Range who's flames were caused when Wukong plunged Taishang Laojun's (Laozi) Cosmic Cauldron down to earth.

I got into chinese dramas and there're definitely alot of chinese myth/looks/history/fashion that are underrated. I absolutely love the way traditional and modern music are combined in chinese music (like Grain in Ear). Hanfu fashion is beautiful too. When people think of "eastern culture" it is usually Japanese aesthetic or pop culture. It would be great if other countries and cultures get to show more of themselves on the world stage
