I hate when people call me African American. I'm just American. Who is this African person. I'm American primarily with island heritage but I just so happen to be black. What if we all just started calling all white people Euro-American? What do the white people from Africa who become American citizens call themselves, "white-African American"? The term is lame.

But you ARE African American. You've literally got African blood running through your veins and there's nothing you can do about it. And yes, white Americans are called European American. There's nothing wrong with being called African American or European American, it's just used to be a bit more specific.

In England, black people don't go around calling themselves African British/English or Black British. It's so extra in my opinion and theres no need for such a distinction to be made between white and black people. Also, considering that the only people in America that are truly American are the Native Americans, if there is going to be this distinction, all the white americans should refer to themselves as Scottish-american, Polish-American etc. This is why I do not get why there is a specific distinction of black people being singled out as the non-native Americans. It just seems unneccessarily imbalanced IN MY OPINION. You don't have to care about my opinion or agree. That's okay. I didn't even expect to get so many likes or for my comment to get so much attention.

Africa is a continent, so if you call yourself African American it implies that you're from Africa, which just isn't true for people born elsewhere. I was born in the US and I'm an American citizen, so I just think of myself as black. Sure, my ancestors were African, but I didn't come from there, so calling myself an African American would be inaccurate.

Bullsh** as far as i know my family is Haitian. So i call myself Haitan-American but as far as saying I was dragged into West Africa from this place in Africa is bs. I'm lying. Lying to my African friends their children my island counterparts & my Black American community. Stick to what you know about yourself & continue to acknowledge the factual past. That's what's important not logical explanations for where your history lies.

Geographic birthplace confers no status of citizenship. Your blood determines this. If all non blacks magically died off, would the USA still be the USA? No. If all non-whites died of magically tomorrow and it was just white people, would USA still be USA? Yes. Therefore, you being on the land mass known as USA, makes you no more American than I being born on Mars making me a Martian.
@limeyfigdet7460
@limeyfigdet7460 8 жыл бұрын
Pierre Degare' That logic might be true in other countries, but it's not the case in America. The USA has always been a melting pot of different types of people, all calling themselves Americans. The US is a country of immigrants, even the white people who founded America were immigrants.

So of they are happy being called black, you can do that. If they are happy being called African American, you can do that. It doesn't matter what skin tone you are, as long as the other person is happy with any terms you use to describe them.

The problem is that there is no equivalent to "Caucasian" for black people. If such a term existed, I would use that. Because I hate all the color words. They're about as accurate as redskins. That being said, given these are the terms we have to work with, I would say that black is more proper. I used to insist on saying African American, thinking that "black" is offensive. Until I saw an episode of Community where the black lady got pregnant, and at the baby shower, Annie made an authentic Mali dish, and the black lady was like, I have no idea what that is ew. And I recently saw an episode of SNL making fun of Kwanza and how no black people actually celebrate that. My point being, African American is offensive because most people who we refer to as "African American," are, quite frankly, not African anymore. They are simply "American." And to continue to distinguish them as African American actually makes them seem more foreign than they are. It perpetuates that the US is a white people country and black people are intruding others. Recent additions. White immigrants become American within a generation or two. Nobody says Scandinavian American when they randomly see a white person. And anyone who is not white is a permanent foreigner, no matter how many generations pass.

@davidelliott1594 7 жыл бұрын
+Appeasing Poet I use both terms interchangeably. I am an American whose ancestors were predominantly African and a "black" Americans. I have no issue with either term. To me, to say African American has no inaccuracy. I think African American only sounds foreign to foreigners. No multi-generational Americans of any race think African American means your from Africa. For the people who say white people don't hyphenate themselves or as you put it "Scandinavian American," remember there are still millions of multi-generational white Americans who still refer to themselves as Irish-American, Italian-American, etc despite having never been to Italy or Ireland. If people remember, the hyphenation of Americans began with European immigrants. To me, people who indicate African Americans not being from Africa seem to neglect that Caucasians in America are not from the Caucasus Mountains either, so that term is not correct either. African Americans have cultural inheritances that were a blend of African and European traditions, and thus, is something different from both.

***** If you're born in the US and have Mexican ancestors you're Mexican American. Your parents are also Mexican American since they live in the US now. At the same time anyone who is a citizen is a plain old "American" if they don't want to include their past lineage, being singularly "American" isn't solely for white people, but many people consider being African/Mexican/European-American as a proud representation of their ancestry which is why even if someone's great grandparents and down had all lived in the US they can still be Mexican-Americans. I'm European-American, but I have no special attachment to Europe, I've never been there, so I only ever Identify as "American." You can identify yourself however you like, even if some people try to force you into a specific label they don't get to choose for you, only you get to choose.

+David Elliott I didn't say white people don't hyphenate themselves (nor am I saying that identifying in such a way is a bad thing). I meant that Americans don't hyphenate other white people. No one here EVER assumes, when they randomly see a white person, that they might have just arrived in America yesterday and are a tourist or immigrant or illegal alien or whatever. No one says, my cashier was so cute, she was European American blah blah. But anytime they see a PoC, it's always, where are you from? where were you born? where is your family from? You see what I mean?

African American is equivalent to the term "Afro-Caribbean" which is used in the UK to identify black people born to Black Caribbean parents. Reason why black identity is a lot less complicated in the UK compared to America is because there aren't many black people here that don't have linage in either the Caribbean or Africa. So you're either Black British African or Black British Afro-Caribbean but when you ask a black person where they're from they'll be more specific i.e "My dad is Nigerian, my Mum is St Lucian." Unfortunately, due to the history of America, black people who are descendants of africans enslaved in the USA do not have the privilege of being specific about which country their ancestors are from. So I would say yes, they are African american, HOWEVER, in saying that, white people should be called European-American as they too aren't direct descendants of North America. Most of their ancestors would have been from western europe.

That Nigerian girl that said she was African American technically is wrong. African American is an ethnicity, black is a race. She is bajan and Nigerian specifically her ethnic group (Yoruba Igbo or Hausa). She's from a completely diff background. African Americans are black people with a shared history and culture who were brought to the US via slavery. I Blame the US census tho they use African American as a politically correct term for black because it makes whites feel uncomfortable to say black.

Blackness was a thing that originated from Americans, our entire culture is black. *Black* History, Historically *Black* Universities, etc. Saying Black isn't a bad word. So thats why we are given the term A.A and remember we didnt give ourselves that term so your made or irritated at the wrong people sweety take that up with white supremacy and racism.

Mariah Santiago I wasn't irritated at the A.A thing per say ...I was irritated because I've lived in South Africa my whole life and there are lot of lies and misconceptions when people refer to Africa as a continent (The A.A things is very racist if you think about it because white people in America aren't referred to as European American but every other race has to identify as something before American)

@@mariahsantiago2327 With a last name Santiago sounds like you have Spanish blood in you as well. The world population can be divided into 4 major races, namely white/Caucasian, Mongoloid/Asian, Negroid/Black, and Australoid. What if your Ancestors came here 400 years ago are you African-American or just American. People often don't realize this but the Irish were brought to the New World as slaves as well. Are they white Americans, European-Americans, Irish-Americans or just American. Too many labels in America.

Ilhem Hamdi you are white and completely African. Correct, but when you think of Africa you think of black. That's make sinse, Africa is the home of the black race. I am black and completely American. I am a person of African decent, meaning I have pride in being black. You are African because your people invaded and made a home there. It can be equally said that you are a European who lives or was born in Africa. That doesn't take away the right of the original people of Africa to consider you European who lives in Africa. African is not a race, but it is synonymous of the black race.

For me being black and Canadian its interesting to watch this video. Number one because my family is from the beautiful islands of Trinidad and Tobago and I refer to my ethnicity as afro-trinidadian/afro-west Indian (i have issues with why its called the west indies, but that's another topic in itself) and my race as black. To me the afro prefix describes where my distant ancestors originated, granted I do also find it investing that the whites down there don't commonly identify as european-trini. Number two, I saw african american as more of a broad ethic group. To me, because my family is from the west-indies the afro in my ethnicity tells the story of my appearance; meaning that I got my looks from distant ancestors that at some point (umpteen generations ago) were probably from somewhere in West Africa and the west-indian part tells the story of where they were sent after being stolen. So from my perspective African American meant that people of this ethnic group had distant ancestors who originated from a similar place as me but were sent to the U.S therefore making them American, but since we both are apart of distant african decent and are black its difficult to tell who is from where (i.e. US, Trinidad, Canada) and black was a blanket team that united us all based on the colour of our skin. Number three because in Toronto I'm pretty sure the team African Canadian is not as common, at least where I lived, because most of the blacks were of West-Indian decent with a few of direct African decent. My experience was that African Canadians were another ethnic group who's ancestors came to Canada through the underground railroad or sometime after from the States or people who were brought to Canada via the slave trade. Number four, I see national identity and culture as Trinidadian-Canadian; I can apply for both passports and both cultures make me who I am socially. Nobody will take my curry goat buss up shot (or any curry lol), soca, aversion to the cold or love of growing up in Toronto away from me. Lastly, I was once called African American, in Toronto, by someone while they were trying to describe me. Though I explained why I was not, I found it interesting that this person assumed my ethnic group based on the colour of my skin and their perspectives (not all brown people originated from Indian and not all white people originated from England).

Angelica Romero any term describing power directly connected to a racial group, should have a negative connotation. Why does the power have to be tied to a race? Why can't you just be a powerful human who happens to be a minotiry? History shows that when any group isolates themselves in connection to amount of power, things simply cannot end well.

When I was growing up I actually encountered a couple of people that thought being called black was offensive. I always assumed that it was because black is referencing the colour of their skin rather than them as a person; kinda like how 'the n word' was originally a reference to their skin tone and then gained a negative connotation through correlation. So, since my experience with that person I have tried to avoid mentioning race/skin colour when interacting with a black individual and if I need to refer to someone who is black (but not talking to them) or the black community I would often say Aftrican-American or occasionally black-American.

If you think about it, a white person who was born in Africa, and moves to America is African American, therefore, African American does't really refer to skin color, it refers to a continental heritage. If you ask a white person," What is your race?" they aren't going to say "I'm European", they will say "I'm white." Black is the only valid way to describe the race, as it actually refers to the race, not the continent you were born on.

Just curious, why are white people the only ones who gets to be called "Americans"? Everyone else has to be specified and categorized, like yes they're "American", but with conditions. Yes, you're technically American, but you're not really actually one of us. Native American, Asian American, African American, Indian American, Mexican American etc. Also, why are all black people FORCED to claim Africa? Like, no I'm not African sorry. By that logic, seeing as Africa was the birthplace of all humanity and Africans were the First Peoples, aren't we then all African Americans? Similarly, why are Asian Americans forced to identify what "kind of Asian" they are? White Americans aren't forced to claim any European heritage or country. What's up with the double standard?
