This movie sacrificed some spectacle for some heart. The "stand up moment " from the action scenes was the emotion that invests you in a fight not soulless choreography. This movie isn't perfect but it sure is refreshing for this universe

Brandon Ennis I think the issue a lot of people have with Cap Iron and Panther is that they just punch people really hard and generally the villains do the same thing in the MCU. Batman punches a lot sure but his villains make him more interesting, the MCU just doesn’t have that.

I feel like they should have done their regular react to the movie now and then later when it came it's turn in the timeline, do the MCU in review for this movie. I don't like that they are adding this movie to the list out of order, especially cuz that decision might be influenced by the hype surrounding the movie's release. It would have been better to just come back it in a few months and see how they felt about the movie then

@bipolarcow
@bipolarcow 6 жыл бұрын
Ray James it was that first challenge fight where things started to fall apart, for me. Instead of framing shots in a way where the viewer can follow the movements/fight choreography (ala Creed/winter soldier/civil war) the camera was pushed in too close on the fighters. So when black panther escapes defeat in a flurry of blows, the audience can't see the movements of how that happened. It may be a small critique but if I'm watching a fight, id like to be able to see the movements, like watching a dance.

Gotta disagree with Nick on the Black Panther and Captain America feeling limited stuff. I actually think that provides a more relatable and grounded feel to those movies and makes for a nice breakaway from the Gods and Aliens part of the universe. Some of the best MCU movies have been in this vein (Cap 2, Guardians (No real superpowers in that movie) ) Wholeheartedly agree with Tim on the "No moment where I went Holy Shit this is awesome". But really like the movie as a whole. Great performances, great political concepts and ideas, cool world, characters and action. P.S. Really hated the Martin Freeman stuff. Elongated the movie unnecessarily and didn't really add anything to the plot.
@Hardwood13
@Hardwood13 6 жыл бұрын
ritwik kumar I agreed on your first paragraph but after that, not so much. Martin Freeman’s stuff had me neutral, was overall not that much but there for plot device There were stand out moments for me, but the biggest one that they even mentioned was when Killmonger introduces himself as a prince and the music shifts so hard along with all the reactions. It was so good

ritwik kumar Might be set up for the sequel. Remember how he questions whether or not there is more Vibranium in Wakanda? I got the impression that that would be the purpose of the character, but he loses interest pretty quick without having much of a change-of-heart moment before becoming something different - makes it hard to discern an arc for the character and leaves a mild impression. Maybe shit gets REKT in Infinity War and surrounding countries learn of Wakandas resources from him and attempt to seize them so as to have further preventative measures in case something like the Thanos invasion happens again.

The way Nick talks about the 3rd act doesn’t make sense. If it was extended to the taking over of the cities then it would be criticized for being rushed due to the resolution. Also, with all the outrageous suits and abilities, now my favorite MCU characters are the basic humans and Cap/Bucky/BP. They can only do so much but are keeping up with the others because of brains Edit: also, I guess I’m just one of those people that who doesn’t really notice bad CGI unless it’s SyFy level because it never shook me

Herman Falck How i think it is mainly how Nick literally forgot how they said that they will entice the others into an uprising, iron man won’t be shooting down wakandan ships so that point is null and instantly creates what he wants. Dane Byrd Yup, as much they all love kissing Feiges ring, rushing this out because god forbid they move infinity war back a bit ultimately hurt what is easily the best film of the franchise. The movies still awesome, but it's sad that the cinematic universe model held back the one movie that was truly trying to do something different. That being said I totally disagree with Nick that the action was uninspired. I mean, one takes in a Marvel movie! Also the challenge fight between T'challa and Erik was by far the most brutal, emotionally charged, and memorable fight in the whole franchise.

I’ve stood with Nick for years, today is the day I must disagree with him. He’s coming off the heels of Ragnarok where I think that movie falls apart and becomes boring in the 3rd act. What’s confusing to me is that Nick is a fan of the Rocky movies and you can see BP is heavily influenced by Rocky 3. A king who was thrown off his throne who must fight back for it. BP currently sits at no.2 behind winter soldier in my eyes. But hey that’s just my opinion

The first challenge scene had me engaged i thought it was great cool moves and the first killmonger fight was predictable but yo i have developed that emotional connection with t'challa where he felt bad for killmonger deep down he isnt a murder where killmonger is fighting to murder. The cultural aspect in Black Panther is what really makes this movie so better. It was great to see the country of Wakanda and how advance it was while still maintaining its ancient cultures. I am with Nick that I was really interested in the political scene of Wakanda, but it did not hinder the movie experience. It enhanced it. Ryan Coogler was going for a message with this film and he hit with Chadwick Boseman and freaking nailed it with Michael B. Jordan. His character was a political statement. It was political, it was social and he was basically the embodiment of black rage that we have all felt at a point in our lives. His motivation was understandable and it really felt like it was a different spin off of Magneto's character. And it didn't just end with Black Panther rejecting him. He saw, to a point, what he was feeling and wanted to make a change, because he knew the past was wrong and they needed to make a better future. And seriously, Killmonger's line of "Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, 'cause they knew death was better than bondage" nailed it! It brought it home. I loved this movie. Perhaps the best MCU movie out today. Even over Winter Soldier.

I disagree completely on the “fighting an evil version of themselves.” Killmonger and T’challa are so dynamically different characters and Killmonger wanted to be King and become the black panther (one of his many motivations). So it makes since that he would have the same technology and suit because he won the challenge and became king through the actual process they set out. The two characters are so completely different BECAUSE what it means to be BLACK PANTHER and KING are entirely different things. Also I’m happy the weapons didn’t get to the streets. I’m tired of stupid scenes in every marvel movie of bystanders in New York or whatever metropolis running from explosions and some sort of soldiers/militia/aliens (you take your pick). The fights, conflict, and dialogue that took place in Wakanda in the third act felt like a great conclusion and resolution of a very nuanced and complicated situation to traverse. This movie was so great because unlike other boring super hero movies (I’ve skipped a lot of the MCU) this movie did a great job of portraying nuanced motivations and different sides butting heads that just doesn’t happen in the average Marvel movie conflict. I agree that there were moments where CG definitely was not as good as it should have been but watching at the Alamo I also kind of chalked that up to just the slight motion blur you always get in theaters. ESSENTIALLY I really think that the criticism of the pacing and that this movie did not provide experiences that other Marvel movies is completely wrong. I strongly prefer the character focused dynamics with amazing choreography, cinematography, and (most) visual effects. The way Black Panther fights and the entire part of the movie in South Korea was fantastic and completely different from you average Marvel fight that tends to be way too gun-shooty-shoot explodey slightly Michael Bay reminiscent scenes. The fighting styles, style of cinematography, and different styles of politics of each tribe consistently throughout the movie defined each character so well.

That's their complaint. Not that the villains aren't well written lol. Think about it. Iron man: iron monger just a bigger iron man. Doctor strange: some evil spellcaster. Basicly the same. Hulk. Abomination. Basically the same. They mean that from a design stand point they are always so similar.

Dane Byrd What on earth are you even talking about? Make all the excuses you want but black panther was fighting basically another version of himself. Quite a few of these marvel comic movies are doing that.
@levischorpioen
@levischorpioen 6 жыл бұрын
This film was possibly the strongest example of "the hero fighting an evil version of themselves". I mean, they were basically fighting the same battle only with a slightly different philosophy. Kilmonger was a more violent version of T'Challa, but ultimately even T'Challa did exactly what Kilmonger was going to do in the long run: Protecting the world from further imbalances and intolerance. The only difference is that Kilmonger wanted to do achieve this with more violence, whereas T'Challa does it with providing care, shelter and education.

Or maybe they have their own view which doesn't equate to other people's? Their Last Jedi review was dumb as shit to me as someone who has seen ALL the star wars stuff recently, and it would have taken 20 minutes explaining their issues and simple things you'd know if you weren't a casual Star Wars fan who knows more about the universe. But being a fan of the actual lore and story and knowing more than what is shown to me, their issues were just cause they didn't get it except for a few parts which were preference. You're just a fake fan in general. Attacking someone saying they saw something they liked that you didn't. I don't know if you know this, but movies aren't made to be seen one specific way by everyone, unless at the end it tells you what you should think. If you think almost 8 billion people all think like you do and so your opinion is right, you don't know what an opinion is. You also don't know that everyone alive has a slightly different view, and you need to grow up and stop talking till you do.

I think the problem of the review is the challenge of separating the review from the reaction where other films require another viewing this is trying to keep fresh from the first viewing in the theater. I know the experience could be skewed from liking it more or less depending on the crowd in the theater (I think of Greg's Avengers experience) where as Nick says he typically enjoys these movies in the comfort of his home where he knows he can rewind or pause. I'm not saying any opinions are invalid I'm just recognizing the challenge that this movie proposes off of just one viewing. Great Show in any case guys!!!!

Turns out you can not think PB is a 10 out of 10 and still not be racist. Weird how that works. Half the people that love the movie wouldn't even be all up in arms about it if the initial reviews before most of the public got to actually see the movie, weren't so inflated. Great movie, I thought it was a bit long and parts did drag. I would have loved to spend some more time with the urban elements and a bit more grit. I'm glad it branched out a bit, but for this movie to deserve the hype they needed to take just another step in my opinion. Great chat about the film guys. I'm glad everyone's not on the same page. The cultural line was more obvious in this review than i really ever noticed at KF. It felt like Andy and Kevin trying to tell Nick why somethings worked. One of big moments where I look at KF and wonder why we differ so much (last i can think of was panther being a cool moment in Civil war) . This movie was top 3 of all Mcu not just the list so far to me. Nicks placement was awkard cuz the room rejected it quickly. This is gonna be a line going forward probably cuz Nick and greg are gonna put alot of movies over this quickly. Im kinda disappointed, thats a weird emotion to have.

I just saw it and I thought it was a great movie. I didn't read a single review because I already knew I was gonna see it. You guys certainly have more of a critical eye than me because at the end of the night, I couldn't find anything I objectively did not like about the movie except that the final fight wasn't a bit more epic. It was *different* but not epic enough for me. And I'm a young Black male, and for this movie that matters more than any other Marvel movie. I saw this movie (in 3D) with my sister, mom, and grandma who have never even watched a MCU and they all loved it as well. It doesn't surpass Civil War and Avengers for me, which are entirely different types of movies compared to Black Panther, but it's undoubtedly my 3rd favorite MCU movie. I really enjoyed this reacts/MCU in Review. Keep up the awesome work Kinda Funny!!! Also, Greg where did you get that Spider-Man shirt? I really want to get one :D Here is my new ranking so far: 1. Avengers 2. Ironman 3. ‎Black Panther 4. Ironman 2 5. Captain America: The First Avenger 6. ‎Ironman 3 7. Thor 8. Hulk I really liked this movie. Both the villains were awesome and the style was very good. The soundtrack was very unique and fit so well throughout. The tech was very creative and different even within the Universe. I also felt that the idea of him using just claws and not powerful weapons fit him trying to stay on the down low. I did feel that a lot of the action was not on par with the rest of the marvel movies and I wished we saw more on him being stealthy. Overall very solid but not my favorite of the later MCU movies. -Zanfare

I just watched it. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I usually have lower expectations for new MCU movies as they are over hyped for me personally. Black Panther felt different and it's better than middle MCU movies like antman and doctor strange but not on the level of civil war or homecoming

I felt like what made this movie so great is that it has more than just great action and dialogue. It has an incredibly compelling storyline in Michael B. Jordan being abandoned and T'Challa being a new king and having to deal with this. Most Marvel movies don't have such a compelling story.

I love this series, but I think the rankings should have been done mathematically, rather than a simple majority. The list would offer a more well-rounded view of their opinions that way. I still love the show, and what they’re doing is a lot of fun. It’s enjoyable watching all of these movies again.

You guys are criticizing Black Panther but praised Doctor Strange and that movie was nowhere near the level of this movie. Most of the Marvel movies have villains that are clones of the hero's so why is it more bothersome in this movie especially given the fact Killmonger has a more understandable motivation over most of the clone-hero villains ? Really don't get the emphasis towards bad CGI especially from Tim for this movie when some of the MARVEL movies you guys reviewed and loved had worse cgi like Age of Ultron, Civil War, Spiderman: Homecoming , etc and all of those movies SUCKED compared to Black Panther. Greg wouldve loved this movie if it were DC. "Iron Man can fly so he's automatically a more interesting character than Black Panther and Captain America." - Nick I bet you guys loved that cheesy Yellowjacket vs Antman scene.

Man Black Panther is great but some of the cgi is really really bad. The scene where T'challa was being crowned king and the people were on the rocks, the rocks and cliff stood out SO much. You could tell it was all green screened and layered on top of each other. It looked way below the usual quality we get. I wonder why.

I usually don’t like posting comments when I am in disagreements but I would have to disagree with Nick 100% I couldn’t disagree more with his comments are saying that this movie did nothing new and unique or that the action sequences weren’t stand out where that black panther as character isn’t unique. Respect the opinion but definitely have to disagree.

Fun fact: There is no such thing as a black panther. 1) Panthers are all big cats. There is no panther species. 2) Black big cats are actually jaguars and leopards with rare coloration disorder, somewhat similar to albinos. If you look closely at "black panthers" you can still see the leopard spots.

Having watched this movie in a packed crowd that was 95% black people, l enjoyed the film, but l ended up feeling like l was watching the crowd around me more than the movie. The reactions and feeling in the air was unlike any other Marvel movie l've ever seen. Between Michael B Jordan's motivation, and the excitement of seeing super hero moments where a black man or woman gets the "this is our hero" shots, and moments like "WHAT ARE THOOOSE" about his shoes or when Martin Freeman disrespects them by touching Tchalla inappropriately or overstepping his bounds in their home, or when she tells her husband she'll kill him without question because of her loyalty, all of that stuff just meant so, so, much more to people who had been waiting for years for a hero that looked like them and a movie that's inspired by struggles that hits closer to home.

It's ridiculous to say that Black Panther is fighting an evil version of himself when truly Killmonger has more in common with Nakia. She and Erik both want Wakanda to come out from the shadows and help oppressed people. They just have vastly different ways of achieving that goal. It seems like some of KF (read: Nick) came into this review just to shit on it so they can be contrary to the overwhelmingly positive reviews. The fact that they never even mention the significance of this film for Black people is glaring. How many films have you seen with so many fleshed out and interesting Black characters, especially well-written female characters. There are really no MCU films with well-written women. Black Panther is top five for me out of all MCU films. KF has such a glaring blind spot with this film.

For me, most of the action was bad, because of the CGI. The Waterfall scenes looked like they were on a cheap set, in front of a cheap green screen. The rocks, the background..hell, next time you watch it, look at the people on the rocks of the waterfall. They look like cardboard cutouts. And then the last fight with BP and Killmonger looked like something out of the early 2000s. When they were falling and fighting, it looked really bad. And then the last fight in Wakanda with the rhinos and everything. I dunno, the CGI looked terrible. Which is strange, cause most MCU movies have solid CGI, but this was some of the worst.

The action, compared to MCU movies, sucked. The waterfall combat was good, but the best action sequence was a car chase, The worst action sequence in Civil War, Winter Soldier, The Avengers was a car chase. I get that this movie wasnt all about the action and was more about the story but that final fight was boring. Compared to most MCU third act fights it has got to be one of the worst.

It’s really good but I had some issues. The first act was pretty slow for me, pretty understandable considering this is primarily an origin story but still it dragged a bit before Killmonger came in full effect. Some of the jokes were REALLY cringeworthy mostly coming from Shuri, and the CG on both T’challa and Killmongers suits were just downright terrible especially in the final fight they should have used more practical suits. Those things aside it was great, not my favorite of the solo movies but definitely a great starting point for the character. Okoye and Erik Killmonger stoke the show for me
