That is why, I believe everyone was ready to see this movie. To quote from T Challa's father, "Stand up you are a king now". There are built perceptions of the black culture that people say that's all we are. That is just the tip of the ice, there are more to people than what we think we see. People are like Killmonger, being in a world that doesn't accept you for who you are but have the blood of royalty. Killmonger is what Anakin Skywalker felt to become Darth Vader. Wanting get out of situation and making there world something better, regardless if it wasn't necessarily totally correct way to do it.

One of the most powerful moments for me was when Erik took the heart-shaped herb and was sent to his "ancestral past". T'Challa's was a beautiful otherworldly savannah full of kings embodied as panther spirits. Erik awoke to a project building. In stark reality. His dad wasn't there... until he was. And then it was still only pain and good intentions. I have to see this like two more times to get all of the symbolism and one-liner "messages" in.

Hey Jody im not Black im Puerto Rican but i got emotional so times in this movie! I absolutely loved this movie and the message it sent! Incredible film!
@kalielxp6 жыл бұрын
When you can relate to the characters and the emotions it brings, no shame if you not black. We all have family and we all have those things in the movie that is common. I never learned about the deep pains in every other culture, until I learned it on my own. Now that I understand the frustrations of PR, I feel just as emotional about that struggle. This movie is just good from being a marvel film. But Marvel has told stories from the lower parts of society. That is what sci-fi is for. To talk about real issues without being outright political and being taking down for that viewpoint.

I noticed the lack of blood when Killmonger cut the throat of the Dora Milaje warrior right away too, my guess is it was either the MPAA ratings board or Disney that didn’t allow blood to be shown. Exactly. Her mourning the death of her brother is not only thematically the lowest point of the film but, for myself, the lowest emotional point I reached in the film. Doesn't mean they have to give over the weapons-related technology; they're probably just going to go into medicine and providing various other kinds of aid and resources, while keeping the more dangerous stuff to themselves. (That was the whole point of the lesson learned from Killmonger; having to balance helping the world at large while also not letting everyone know what you're doing -- i.e., selling vibranuim weapons -- or giving them more of a reason to attack you.) Coogler and crew aren't naive enough to write these characters as just suddenly becoming wholesale buddy-buddy with the rest of the world.

There are so many levels and nuances to this film that it has to be seen multiple times to take it all in. For instance, the dynamic between T’Challa and Killmonger represents the dichotomy of the Black mentality: lost, fatalistic (Killmonger’s “People die every day” line), and misguided versus T’s optimism, righteousness, and the embodiment of duty/responsibility. AND, to even further the point, Black Panther gives the audience not one but TWO main perceptions of the Black male - the illusion of what others see or think we are versus how we see ourselves. Identity is a major theme that runs through the film and I fucking LOVED how both characters were running parallel, and at the same time, reflect each other: two different spectrums, but still Brothers, at the end of the day... Fuck, I gotta see this film again.

Does anyone thinks Black Panther is like the MCU version of Roots. Instead of a slavery story its a story of a nation and it's people and when it's people come back to it's root. Also, even in an advanced civilization, people are vulnerable to traditions and old ideas. It's the basic concept of Star Trek addressing these issues of thinking. Vulcan's couldn't help out Earth, until they get to that point in their advancement to be unified without bigotry. I can see why Wakanda never wanted to let primitive thinking get their power.

Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy could learn something from The Black Panther. 1 - How to make political/social statements that are deep and hit viewers hard. A couple lines at the end really made me reflect on American history... like the death/bondage line. Somehow I think this movie helped me understand how black Americans may feel. 2 - How to make strong bad ass female characters that are believable. Nakia and Okoye were great characters. I think I enjoyed Okoye better than the Black Panther. Her fight scene in Korea kicked ass. 3 - How to make a good villain with powerful motives. Killmonger is one of the best villains I’ve seen since....? At the end of the movie I actually had sympathy for him! I really wanted T’Challa to apologize to him for what happened. LOL! Great movie! I think that T'Challa being a little funnier and light-hearted as a character was intentional. Not saying it is comic accurate to have him cracking jokes (Black Panther has always been a very stoic, reserved character) I would argue that it was meant to show what T'Challa is like in sort of everyday situations. During the Civil War film, when audiences first meet Black Panther, he is grim and angry because he is totally griefstricken, in mourning and almost in shock from the death of his father. I think Coogler wanted to remind us that 1) T'Challa has other people/responsibilities to live for and 2) I believe that the jokes and light-hearted nature of T'Challa in BP highlights just how angry and revenge-driven he was in Civil War. We saw Black Panther on the warpath in Civil War, in BP we see him when has a clear head and is at peace with his father's death.

This was an interesting review from the comic book's fan perspective. Of course the movie had to change things to tell a coherent story that would fit in 2 hours. And I like how Shuri was done also for one reason: If T'Challa had all the smarts, skills, and titles, he would be too much. too perfect. To humanize him a bit, they gave his little sister some of his talents in the comics. I would love to see that he's still smart though, maybe chipping in once in a while and adding his own ideas to Shuri's inventions. Note: you meant they did a 180; they 180'd killmonger. 360 is a full circle, so he would've been the exact same if they 360'd him haha

I think your knowledge of the comics characters actually hinders your enjoyment of some of the characters. The mcu has very loosely been based on the comics From the very start. Iron man and right all through. So I think focusing on the difference would take away from what the MCU and the movies are trying to achieve. The movie should be reviewed on its own. Good work though.

Jody's Corner it definitely felt like it did. Not saying you hated on the movie but throughout your video your compare nearly every single piece of the movie to the comics. Its not an adaptation of the comics. The MCU has always just used the comics as a source but not a comic to screen adaptation so many things would be different. You compared pretty much every single character to their conic equivalent. Which I didn't think was necessary. Just watch the film itself and review as what it is. It felt like your review was to see how close to the comics the movie was. Still a fan of your work but this is all I got from this video. Keep up the great work.
@ryanmorrow53936 жыл бұрын
Writers and directors will deviate from the comics to create their own stories and express their own ideas while still maintaining comic book similarities. So with all things considered, I feel that it's okay for the movies to be somewhat different than the comics. They pretty much have been up to this point.

I really enjoyed it and loved Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger, but ultimately he didn't really do much bad. He racked up kills in the line of service, he killed Klaue, a bad guy, his civil was stopped pretty quickly, and his deportation of weapons never made it. The only things of relevance he did were destroying the plants (if there are no more) and killing Forest Whitaker's character.
@ProperCh6 жыл бұрын
Bruh this film was EPIC. I knew Coogler was gonna kill it but he absolutely smashed it with this one. The biggest positive of the film and why i think that yall are so proud of it is the way they showed African culture. That shit had Lion King all up in there bruh, EPIC. The scenes of the landscape with the score playing were freakin amazing. The heirarchy of the tribes, the sacred rituals. Coogler built a complex Wakanda from ground up man, props to him. Not only that but the story was truly a cut above the rest, i wouldnt say it was on Nolans level but it got into its shadow man. So many themes and issues were explored in this film man. The rite of passage for T'Challa to the throne, what it means to be king, the power and consequences of secrecy, political power plays, a heroes journey, doing the right thing, etc. etc. Coogler understood the magnitude of Wakanda and what it means for the MCU and dealt with it so freakin well. Vibranium and Wakandan tech changes the whole game bruh and Coogler knew that, i was very satisfied with the outcome of the film man. I know some die-hard fans will be like "T'Challa aint never share his technology" but in the context of the story and the MCU it makes the most sense man. Also hes not really sharing it, hes more saying "we have this power and we will distribute it to the world but im still the King around here" thats why the dude at the end of the post-cred questioned him like "what will you give us?". The most epic and impactful sht for me had to have been the trial by combat. I could watch that all day man, the one between Killmonger and T'Challa blew my freakin mind. Killmonger was an A++ Savage bruh, the most motivated and savage MCU villain to date. Thanos will have to be on point to match Killmongers savagery bruh. Dude was fading people left and right without a seconds hesitation, fuhhh. He came straight up in there, no time wasted and executed his plan to the best of his ability. This film hit hella emotional notes too man, seeing the son come into his own and realise that his dad was wrong and that he must find his own way now that hes king. "YOU WERE WRONG BABA, HOW COULD YOU LEAVE HIM" I teared up once and cried once in this film and that shit did it man. Seeing T'Challa realise that his daddy wasnt always right as king killed me man. As for the negatives, there are some but they don't ruin the movie. The CGI was noticably bad at times like T'Challas second time in the dream world and at the end fight. Ullysses Klaw was wasted imo, he was good for his role but got killed off too quickly. Also I would have loved to see Killmonger live as an anti-hero, he was just such an amazing character but what he said at the end was some real sht, respect to him for that. Finally i didn't like how the final fight between T'Challa and Killmonger went down, the choreo and CGI were sloppy to me and it was a bit anti-climactic. I would have loved for the fight to be out in the public battlefield and at the end T'Challa kills Killmonger and makes a speech about how they can't hide any longer and use Killmonger as an example of why they need to take responsibility. Oh and one more thing i would have loved another Lion King moment with T'Challa in his full suit and all his people bowing to him and truly accepting him as the new king, maybe that would come in Black Panther 2 or after Infinity War. Anyways like i said some of the negatives are nitpicks but for the most part, the movie was excellent. I give it an A-
@MarleyMarr20086 жыл бұрын
You have to treat the MCU as a separate Universe from the main Marvel comic book universe. Yes it is derivative from the comic books but it's impossible for everything to be exactly like the comic. What works in the comic books don't work on screen and for storytelling purposes they have to change things in order for it to be streamlined and make sense for audience that hasn't read 50 + years of comics. So I agree with a lot of what Jody is saying you can acknowledge the differences from the comic books but if it works in the film that's the most important thing.
@crossbones136 жыл бұрын
I saw the movie tonight at it was a great film. The weaknesses I see in it are the not quite on the par CGI part in certain sections, the blurry action scene at the beginning of the movie and the changing of M'Baku (the Man-Ape) from a adversary of the Black Panther to an ally. Other than those, this movie delivered on everything it was supposed to. I plan on seeing it again next weekend.

I don't know if y'all know but the reason Forest is in this film is because he's the one who put Ryan Koogler in the game, Forests production company produced fruit ville station Ryan has a lot of respect and love for Forest so that's why he's in this movie.

Yes, this is what I been waiting for! Like I said, I don't know jack shit about the comics and it seems there's been a lot of minor and major changes to characters. But I'm glad you guys could still appreciate the movie even with the differences. Great review.

Amazing review. I subscribed to this channel off of this review alone. Thanks for the comparison of the comics and film. I don't read the comics. Always watched the cartoons growing up. I hope this film will motivate marvel to give BP a solo animated show. So we can follow all of these characters.

In the comics, Killmonger is enhanced by the heart shaped herb. It's just not the complete fruit, they made a synthetic version. And he's enhanced by the same synthetic herb as White Wolf and White Tiger (Who I hope, at least one of them, is in the sequel)..

I knew a lot about the history in this movie, as well, like the IsiXhosa language. And, the dress and accessories of the different tribes. I love that you loved the movie but, can also see their flaws. I love the fact that this movie bought us together as a people But I knew some of the context felt wrong and now i know why. Awesome review.

i just got back and i can't get it out of my mind! it was so fantastic! i'm so glad that i'm not the only one who saw the parallels with the lion king (i feel like that had to have been a little intentional since it is a disney movie and all, but i absolutely loved it). i also really appreciate how you can distinguish between the best character and your personal favorite. i always do that too like i can separate my favorite vs. what was objectively the best from a critical standpoint. shuri was my absolute favorite. this is the first marvel film that i'm gonna go back and see again.

I think the ending implied that T'Challa was going to lend assistance to those in need in the world, not the vibranium itself. Just services, not goods

Great review, I give the movie 10/10.. You guys really taught me alot about what happened in the comics and how it relates to the movie.. Shuri did need to be more cut throat though... You guys expressed how the movie was definitely black excellence at its finest.

The final fight could've been longer. It was epic they way everyone was showing their strengths and skills, but that was supposed to be the BIG conflict. The fights between the two in the comics are bloody and intense. Yeah they had Vibranium suits, but if the destabilizes on the track were deactivating their suits, they both could've gotten in some scratches on each other. Still a pretty damn good fight and film. A+ from me.

2 things Jody Joe. 1. Ryan Coogler said they didn't pull from just 1, but all versions of Panther so different fans will get different feels like you got Reggie but others got someone else. That's cool how they did it nicely though to where no one was really disappointed they couldn't pin him down as 1 iteration. 2. I think Disney most certainly put all the $ behind this it was a $200M budget that's on par with Avengers, IM2. Only other 1st film with a budget bigger was Guardians the budget usually doesn't get that big for solo films at all only reason Civil War got that high is because it was Avengers 2.5. It just won't always be perfect look at Last Jedi you know it had the $ behind it and EVERYONE noticed the terrible parts of CGI. I honestly only noticed it with the Rhinos in Panther. In any case I hope Ryan is coming back for 2 and maybe his CGI skills improve.

As a Black Panther Fan I have to say this movie exceeded my expectations. I just read "A Nation Under Our Feet" for the 6th time and "Killmongers Rage" again so I was primed and ready. Keep it 100... it used to be tough to have a deep comic book knowledge and see the differences of the movie adaptations but if the movie can make sense out of the changes, I'm with it. Especially since film directors have far more barriers to hurdle to tell the story. This movie from a production standpoint was based on two constant ingredients. Pride & Respect ....now I'll just wait for T'Challa, Dr. Strange, and Tony Stark to share a room so the MCU version of the Illuminati can develop.

SPOILERS WARRING one of the major themes i love about this film was the father and the son theme. you really see it with the scenes with black panther and killmonger when they were in the spirit world.

Kilmonger was Kennedy his father was Malcolm x and Forest Whitaker was Martin Luther king. Lupita is every leader that didn't get killed and black panther is Lynden Johnson getting some version of their vision in the civil rights act.

Black Panther will be the 1st movie to be shown in Saudia Arabia in 35 yrs on April 18th. Apparently a ban was lifted in December 2017 that will allow the public of Saudi Arabia to watch movies. AMC will be the 1st movie theater chain to open there also. Why do you think they chose Black Panther to be their 1st movie in decades??

Truly a great film and a must watch IMHO. Fight scene-wise it's not as crisp as The Winter Soldier and the CGI kinda take you off at times. But on the narrative side it is a superb film and on par with the original Guardians Of The Galaxy story-wise. Easily within the top 5 best MCU movies ever and a great example on how superhero films can be more narrative and deliver a meaningful message. I loved Shuri and want to see more of her. Okoye is another badass that I would love to see more in the future. Killmonger is one of the best Marvel movie/tv villains joining the ranks of Loki, Kilgrave, and Kingpin. I would love Ryan C to return for part 2, but if he doesn't, Marvel should hire a director that can bring more flare to the action side. T'Challa is one of the best hand to hand combatants and tactician in the Marvel Universe and would love a better one-on-one fight scenes in the future. Disappointed too that Killmonger's martial art skills weren't that pronounced in this movie.

Question re: sharing technology Is it possible he meant medical, farming only?... Since they think farming is all they have, he could throw medical at them. I can't see him exposing Wakanda at all... But if he had to give something, I think it would be farming and a tad of medical to see how they acted with that. BUT ONLY if they were still shielded.
@poppyraima53426 жыл бұрын
Exactly how I read that; no version of T'Challa (at least that I'm aware of) is naive enough to just wholesale start trusting other countries, especially other world superpowers. There's plenty of benign, genuinely beneficial technology and other scientific advancements that could come about by Wakanda expanding its role in the world in those fields. What you're ultimately looking at is an African country that actually benefits off of the resources it exports as opposed to just being exploited, and seeing that sort of autonomy is probably one of the most understated and empowering images in the whole thing.

Also is T'Chaka technically a "murderer"? He didn't kill him in cold blood he was going to bring him back, but he pulled a gun. I don't see it as "murder". I think they wanted to build lupita towards the Dora remember the end shuri gave her the fit and she's like "I'm not dora" it's Origin you don't want them to be 100% what they're gonna be then there's no where for them to go in the next.

A lot of ppl like Killmonger because he's the only main villain the MCU had who was "hood". I liked him because he not only stood a chance of beating BP, but actually did so--in a fair fight. Plus he had a legtimate point, & challenged BP physically, mentally & philospohically. I'm sure the comics will retcon T'Challa & Killmonger being related to suit the MCU (hopefully they'll make Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch the twins of Magneto again). I agree the Queen Mother should've done a little more in the movie. She should've been the one who not only made the elixir but also stole the heart-shaped herb. And should've had at least a quick fight scene (maybe briefly beating up Agent Ross, before Nakia stopped her). Shuri was made to be kind of like RiRi Williams, who's potentially smarter than Stark (considering she's a kid). And the movie clearly stated that she improved upon the suit BP made. I actually like her being smarter, because it gives her an advantage over BP. BP's still smart, but Shuri's smarter & can be used in situtations where BP was busy. Klaw was a waste, since Avengers 2. I didn't like his zaniness, which was turned up to rediciouslness in BP. The best thing is that Storm could be in a BP sequel, since Disney/Marvel got the X-movie rights back.
