I knew this was happening, but didn’t know it was so widespread. Explains why some of the prestigious public schools in metro cities rapidly fell into disrepair and closed. Money diverted to other schools leaving students to suffer.

In my area, the effort to keep schools segregated was extreme enough that new municipalities were split off from the main city right around the time that desegregation busing within municipalities became the law of the land.

For us in the modern day it’s classism. When we moved to our first house in the suburbs they separated our district by housing type and neighborhood. The homes further from the school but across the street from the boarding prep school fed into our district and only 2 apartment complexes where rent was more than most mortgages.

Yeah! No school that’s allowed to discriminate based on special needs, income, race, etc should get a single penny from taxpayers, especially since that $ is desperately needed in actual public schools! If they won’t treat kids equally, districts should pull their funding.

There is some unfairness. I've known Christians who wanted to send their kids to private, religious schools that in accord with their moral values. Fair enough, right? But, they felt like they shouldn't be paying taxes to fund the public schools they weren't using and disapproved of. (Which I can sympathize with -- I hate it that my taxes support unjust wars.)

In Mississippi, almost every county had a segregation academy in the 90s. And many are still operating today. However the education in the MS academies were worse than public school ed (hey we're talking MS here).

Germantown Municipal Schools in TN was formed this way. They were under the Shelby County Schools system alongside Memphis City Schools. 90% white district.

That just happened where I live. The school split into two zones. Folks that lived in nice houses went to the newly built school. Both are public schools. We literally live half a mile away but our daughter has to go to the other school.

I'm from that town in SC, (Summerton, S). Claredon County District One is still very much segregated. We don't have any white kids in our schools. They all go to school in the next town over or Claredon Hall, which is a private school created in response to Brown v, Board ed.

So true, I've lived this. When my husband taught special education in Greene County Georgia, he learned that Lake Oconee Academy, also a public school in Greene County, had seceded from the county system and did not have a special Ed department. Wasn't difficult to realize why. Most of the kids being referred to special services were non-white.
