For us in the modern day it’s classism. When we moved to our first house in the suburbs they separated our district by housing type and neighborhood. The homes further from the school but across the street from the boarding prep school fed into our district and only 2 apartment complexes where rent was more than most mortgages.

There is some unfairness. I've known Christians who wanted to send their kids to private, religious schools that in accord with their moral values. Fair enough, right? But, they felt like they shouldn't be paying taxes to fund the public schools they weren't using and disapproved of. (Which I can sympathize with -- I hate it that my taxes support unjust wars.)

When I hear my parents and grandparents talk about having to hike to school... I believe them now. Both my parents went to segregated schools.

I was told that in GA if your student had an IEP you could enroll them in a private school and the state would pay for it. Go figure.

In California, public funds pay for charter schools, which are essentially free private schools.

That just happened where I live. The school split into two zones. Folks that lived in nice houses went to the newly built school. Both are public schools. We literally live half a mile away but our daughter has to go to the other school.

Wait! So all kids aren’t privileged enough to be able to pay for a private school that still receives public money through state programs and tax dollars? Imagine that.

They do the same now with the Lottery. The money from the lottery is disproportionately distributed to majority white schools.

I'm from that town in SC, (Summerton, S). Claredon County District One is still very much segregated. We don't have any white kids in our schools. They all go to school in the next town over or Claredon Hall, which is a private school created in response to Brown v, Board ed.

So true, I've lived this. When my husband taught special education in Greene County Georgia, he learned that Lake Oconee Academy, also a public school in Greene County, had seceded from the county system and did not have a special Ed department. Wasn't difficult to realize why. Most of the kids being referred to special services were non-white.
