Great job on the interpretation!! And no, it took a while to unpack the layers of meaning and what the character (Ned) represents. Don’t stress over the critics in the comments. Just enjoy the ride. Tyler had to go deep into the song writing process to cleanse his mind. Chlorine is cleansing, but too much can be toxic. And yes, Tyler has a love/hate relationship with the creative process. You picked up on the key meaning. The pool represents the song writing process, which can be painfully slow at first. Ned represents Tyler’s creativity but also his inner critic. He only jumps into the pool when it’s just right (when the song is good). And if you notice, Ned’s antlers grew (the music has the power to transform) … that will be important later. At the end, the pool is empty (when one song is complete, there’s another one to write) but Tyler is drained, mentally and physically. Ned comes alongside him to give him inspiration/support. I believe the cup represents a new song idea or beat or lyric. Tyler offers it to Ned, but he turns his nose up at it … that’s the struggle with the inner critic. I hope you continue the journey! It is a fun ride. Just don’t let people stress you out over it. The themes repeat and many aspects are cyclical, so it gets easier once you are familiar with the toolkit Tyler taps into. But you definitely got a W on this one!! 🎉

I think you get the win for this one. Nice breakdown. No I did not figure it out on my own. Took a lot of understanding the artist and being a fan. I believe the last part of the song to be about the pressure he felt trying to create his next album to live up to the success of the last one and explaining to his fans why this album took so long to come out. The creature in the video is a lore thing, lots of deep diving into the band to understand all that. ❤❤❤

One of the great things about Tyler's writing style is that he's cryptic enough to link his songs to the themes of the albums...but he's vague enough to let each listener decide what the songs mean to them. He very rarely will explain a song's meaning because he embraces the fact that we get what we need/want from what we hear in his lyrics.
@J3nJ3nl0llip0p Жыл бұрын
21 Pilots: So, I'm old enough to be these dudes' mom, and I can't get over the writing style! His poetry is incredible. The way they mix genres in each song, takes me on a journey every time; the stories told, in the lyrics AND videos are way too relatable. His style of poetry hits my soul in a special way. The freedom of flow, the metaphors, flipping words, how he can sing and rap, switching flawlessly...wait, can I trust that?? 😅😅 Notice how he almost, but never quite, sipped from his cup throughout this video?

I did not figure this out on my own. This is one of their more cryptic songs and videos. The creature symbolizes Tyler’s creativity. He has to feed it to keep it alive. You got most of it which is more than most reactors get. Keep going. TOP doesn’t make a bad song.

you were on the right track for sure about it being about Tyler's relationship with music - and no, people don't figure out his lyrics the very first listen (rarely at least) he compares it to Chlorine because in small doses, Tyler needs music to help get his thoughts out and cleanse himself, but it can become overwhelming and become toxic - just as too much chlorine can the other part here is this came in the Trench album, which was right after Blurryface when they became famous worldwide with Stressed Out, Ride, and then eventually Heathens was also released right after as a single with Suicide Squad - they took a year long hiatus where they just completely disappeared before the release of the Trench album - so "the moment is medical" and "when i leave don't save my seat, i'll be back when it's all complete" refer to this hiatus and basically saying they needed this time off to cleanse but don't worry, we're coming back when we're ready - this is also about the hiatus at the end where he talks about being sorry he forgot about us, let me catch you up to speed, etc. - he's talking about why he was gone for so long lastly, Ned is the little character - he does show up in later music videos as well - he represents their creativity - so they are aiming to please Ned - you can see he isn't willing to take the plunge until everything is perfect - then at the end when it's back to just the little cup, he isn't impressed anymore

Yes, W for you! This song is about Tyler's cathartic relationship with writing music. And not to worry, TOP fans (known as the Clique) are very supportive with reactors, especially when they have genuine reactions like yours. We love it when we see them putting pieces together and you'll start to pick up more on the abstract lines and references the more familiar with their discography you become. You don't have to know the lore to enjoy or get the meaning. It does enhance the experience, but Tyler keeps his lyrics vague so we can find our own meanings. We'll lovingly fill you in on some background as you continue down the TOP rabbit hole. The yellow tape is a symbol for the Banditos. It's this album's logo ||-// in yellow, the color of hope and friendship. (Plays a big part in the lore storyline.) Knowing you like to keep it random rather than follow an order, and there's nothing wrong with that - this music stands solid on its own - might I suggest starting with their earlier work first so that you get a better feel for where they're coming from. The order stuff doesn't pick up 'til a little later in the discography. Would def suggest Migraine, Ode to Sleep, and Lane Boy as some good candidates. Bottom line, we Clikkies love watching TOP reactions and personally, I'm elated you're on to them now. Been watching you for a while now and you're great! You really put a lot into what you do. Love how you bring others into the mix! Keep on, fren! |-/ 💛

Dope reaction! You definitely get the W on this one… I think it probably takes another artist to really grasp the meaning behind this song, and you nailed it! The ending is much more obscure… I don’t know that there’s any consensus on what he really means with “can you build my house from pieces, I’m just a chemical.” But ignoring that, you nailed the meaning of the song. Now expand that to the video…. he’s drinking chlorine from a cup, and enticing this little creature (he’s named Ned) to jump into a swimming pool. It has been understood that Ned represents Tyler’s creativity, and how it is only satisfied once the work is complete, once the music is just right. I grasped the meaning of the song much as you did, but the video I had to read about to understand lol.

You’re doing a great job! First and foremost, it’s about enjoying the tune. The deeper you go, the better it gets! The videos are very colour oriented depending on the album. This is from Trench, it’s all about yellow (representing hope). Blurryface was red and black, Scaled and Icy is pastels..etc. I suggest Ode to Sleep, Heavy Dirty Soul (the prelude to the trilogy) Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners and Levitate. You might also like to do The Hype and then The Hype (Berlin Sessions) to give an idea of how they can switch up the tunes.

can you build my house with pieces has like 5 different meanings to me and i'm not sure if he meant any of them LMAO but loved this reaction and breakdown! i think ode to sleep is a must for their journey but if you like the breaking down codes, there's the heavydirtysoul, jumpsuit, nico and the niners, and levitate storyline!

I just got into twenty One pilots through the ren community and evidently there is a whole "lore" behind all their songs like an ARG. I was instructed to KZbin "dema for dummies" and "twenty One pilots lore" It helps understand the meaning behind the songs and the story he's trying to tell. Chlorine and car radio are probably my two favorite songs. I'm still learning the lore but I think you did pretty good here❤

Good job BP. Some context will help with a few things - at this time they had just had a rapid rise to success with the album Blurryface and at the height of their new found fame they went on 'hiatus' and basically dropped off the radar totally to write new music. Tyler especially I think needed a break mentally from the sudden change in his life and all the attention. Lines relating this are "when I leave, don't save my left, I'll be back when it's all complete. The moment is medical". We found out when they came back with the new album that Tyler had basically locked himself in his basement studio working non-stop for year to write, record and produce the new album and the story that goes with it (it's a concept album) and it was a really challenging time for him ..."I'm so sorry I forgot you. Let me catch you up to speed. I've been tested like the ends of a weathered flag that's by the sea".
@Jules-R Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry that some of the commenters have been assholes about it, that's disappointing. Yeah it takes a few listens to catch all the details of the symbolism in their songs. It does help to know their music though as you do get used to how Tyler's brain works! The fact that you have to work at understanding their music is something I think the fans love and they do literally have a whole Lore around some of their music, but I get that not everyone wants to work that hard and just wants to enjoy a vibe!

The only L you took from my stand point, is missing one of my favorite lines from Tyler, and you literally did what he says in the line. “Now different lives I lead, my body lives on lead The last two lines may read incorrect until said” you literally read it wrong, then corrected yourself after hearing it, but didn’t realize it 😂

Edit: It did take me a while to figure this out, and I was really impressed by how much you got right. Keep up the great work! The walls and the rebel red carnation are references to a city they created called dema. Essentially, the city and it's symbolistic color, red, represents mental illness and the suppression of creativity. He's trying to escape dema, or his depression and anxiety, and the walls that confine are the struggles he has to break through to do that. the longer he stays in dema, the harder it is to get out and the harder it is to create and stay hopeful. the red carnation, his mental illness, is growing as he's decaying.

I think you nailed it for a first listen. And don't listen to the idiots. Tyler rarely gives his own interpretations of lyrics. He will occasionally give what inspired certain songs, but I think he prefers individuals to figure out their own meaning. But don't do the Trench trilogy without getting some of the lore. You'll never figure it out on your own, but it is worth it to understand what that album is about before listening to it.

Keep going man, you're killing it! Loving the reactions. I am sure if you were to ask Tyler himself he would not tell you whether you were right or wrong. He would only take the time to understand your interpretation and appreciate that that's how his music affected you. There are interviews where people have asked Tyler what their logo means and he won't tell them, because then that implies that it is the only and "correct" way to interpret it. If someone interprets it a different way, it has just as much meaning to that person as the original meaning to Tyler. No such thing as "taking an L" when reacting to TOP, only new ideas and interpretations, all of which are welcome!

Anyway, u did really well with this one. I just want to say this to help you in future. Any song from Trench or scaled and Icy albums will have a storyline involved most likely. I would love to see reactions of Lane boy (I think this would be your favorite song for sure) Guns for hands, Holding onto you, or Heavydirtysoul. Each one is easier to understand, lyrics are insane, musically so different. Chlorine is so awesome even though the song is rough to interpret. But you did a great job. Songwriting and creating music thoughts were spot on. The creature (Ned) represents Tyler’s creative side. Pool starts empty, he wants no part of it. Lyrics (when I leave don’t save my seat I’ll be back when it’s all complete) we’re from the long break they took after Blurryface album and into finally completing Trench album. Always looking ahead to your next TØP reaction. Much love

Good work P, as far as I understand it... I think the pool represents the singers mind and imagination, filling it with chlorine is a cleansing act of creativity and song writing. The creature is I think representative of his creativity that thrives and evolves (note the antlers growing when it was swimming in the pool)... I think it also represents his inner critic and acts like nothing is good enough until his brain over flows with creativity... once a song Is born the pool empties... the scene at the end I think acts as a metaphor for imagination being tapped dry, but the process starts again with a single cup (read spark) of creativity... offering it to the creature who rejects it as it demand more chlorine (creativity)... thats my thoughts and they kind of reflect yours so I'm going to give you a W and sympathise with you as we are of a similar generation that must navigate the new generations insights and creativity... born of social media and technology!... I think old thing, that you and I come from a bygone era of simplicity within music!

Nah, man, you actually disected this great and 100× better than 99% of reactors! Definitely about his relationship with music and his mind. When you said you didn't care to do things in order and just like to be able to listen, I'll say, this one doesn't fall into that category and most of their songs don't, thankfully, but some of them like Heavy dirty soul, Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners and Levitate all go together, if those songs are recommended. And they're confusing as hell if you dont know the lore of blurry face and trench, their 2 albums, which I hate and love at the same time because they're incredibly creative, but confusing lol. Reading up on it before hand helps if you want. A recommendation of one of their songs I love is The Hype. If you watch the original and then the Berlin Sessions version of the song, where Tyler reimagines it, it's very cool. He's definitely a gifted writer and composer. I think you'd really vibe with both versions. Again, great job. You definitely take the win on this breakdown. I think you take the win on all reactions, though, because you give an honest effort and appreciation toward the music, no matter what it is. It's much appreciated!

Sometimes you get bad vibes that need to be sterilized, and a little sip could do that, (I do not recommend it) but taking yourself out of a situation that is toxic could be like dropping some iodine tabs in your canteen.
