Eugene, OR is in the middle of nowhere. Logistically speaking, the airport is small and there aren't many hotels. They deliberately hold it there so that it is difficult for fans to get to and then they wonder why there's lack of interest.

Damn, you are ignorant. FloJo juice meet. Seriously? There's no lack of fans in Eugene. I was there for the Worlds two years ago and it was sold out. They do need more hotels and housing. Jesse Owens should be at the top of the list for a meet to be named after. With the exception of Gail Denvers, suspicions of drug usage did exist for some of the remaining athletes which may have contributed to track meets not being named after them. At least at UCLA Bush Stadium has a field name for the great late Black Decathlete, Rafer Johnson, who was a UCLA grad who won the Decathlon at the 1960 Olympics. And yes, a track meet should be named in his honor as well!

I have read narratives that were questionable at best and I kept coming back to so wtf did he do that is worthy all of this attention? So it all comes down to he was propped up. Hopefully in time we will move away from this and go on to more accomplished athletes whose achievements can be quantified and not manufactured.
