Very odd indeed. I compare racers to cats with how much they hate water. They'll actively avoid water. I've had em run from me and there's water and they'll do everything BUT go in the water. I've even tried releasing some into the water after catching them and they DO NOT like the water.

No, he was hunting. Just because he is not a water snake does not mean that he doesn't know where edible critters are.

Racers around my house eat bullfrogs and crawdads so not that unusual

I lived by the Little Scioto River (more of a creek at that point) in Ohio when I was a kid and Blue Racers lived on the dam right next to my house. They were always by the water. Not sure if they were ever in it though. One day there was a scarlet king snake or milk snake in the water below the dam. It had to be because as a kid I thought it was a Coral snake except we don't have those so idk. Injust remember thinking, "whoa that's a venomous Coral snake I've seen on tv!"

Racers are smaller, more agile, and visually oriented. They seldom rely on constriction to kill their prey, typically overpowering or crushing smaller animals with their strong jaws. Ratsnakes are built to climb and constrict, they’re very muscular and not very fast comparatively. When approached, a Racer will almost always dart away quickly, while a Ratsnake is more likely to freeze and rely on camouflage.
