I just got some black raspberries this year as nature's gift to me, not that I planted any. Despite not being in the best location I decided to keep them and see what they do. My only fear is controlling them but I'm pretty active in my (very large) lawn and I think I can keep them penned to one or two areas. Despite this being their first year, the vines are actually bearing a little bit of fruit. Most of it is underdeveloped and shriveling before maturity. But there are a handful of berry clusters that are looking good.

These grow wild in my yard with birds planting them. I found they like partial shade. If planted in the sun, I found the berries are smaller and the leaves are also smaller and tired looking. I don't need to add any nutrients. I'm mid-Atlantic, zone 7A with clay soil with mica and lots of worms. These plants aren't vines, but canes. The first year's growth doesn't produce fruit the first year, but the following year those same canes produce fruit. After that, you cut down those same canes in the 3rd year because they're done. Good luck!

Wild black raspberries...by me. 50 years ago in central illinois you could find berries and also wild asparagus growing on roadsides, railroad right of ways, and drainage ditches. Much effort went into eliminating these natural and free food sources. The University of Illinois has published that it is impossible to cultivate wild black raspberries? We do. We have patches that are 50 yrs old. As an experiment we crushed a few gallons of berries like we always do for jelly but I kept the seeds and dumped them by the back fence. Guess what? They grew and now birds are spreading the seeds for me. So please sacrifice a few berries and put them at the base of a fence as if a bird sat on the fence then pooped seeds when it flew off. THAT is exactly how it works. Now do it!

Hey, what do you have so far? I found a heaping ton of black raspberries in my back yard this year along with 2 mulberry trees (which pushed my flowering snowball bush out of their way lol, but are still no match for honeysuckle if left to grow) and 2 mulberry saplings. Elderberries galore and some other berry I think is edible but haven't identified yet. Small, pale purple white and blue berries that sort of grow on a vine. I spotted them growing on my elm tree last year. It fell over in the late fall, now those berries have completely taken over the fallen remains of it! Not to mention a year or two before it fell my mom stopped by and we just happened to walk in the back looking for morel mushrooms. Found one next to the tree, and as I looked around I spotted them growing all over that area! Think it was 11 or 13 that I found. Haven't seen any there since, but it sure was a cool moment. I'm hoping to work the acre and a smidge here into useable garden space this year. Maybe start a few summer and fall crops, and start planting big time next year. Really want to do persimmons and goji berries if the climate's right here in MO.

Sitting at my kitchen table in Northern Illinois right now eating a plateful of black raspberries from my yard. I never do anything to prune or care for them, but every year I get a healthy bumper crop to pick right off the vine. Maybe I will begin taking extra care to expand even further. Thank you. 🍃

Awesome video 😊 we love our black raspberries over here at the Forging Freedom Channel. One problem I have had year over year is no matter how much I water them they turn out quite small. I think they should be bigger. They face west though and so get a lot of heat in our Utah sun. Any recommendations?
@jamesprigioni
@jamesprigioni 7 жыл бұрын
If the plants are to dense you can thin them out which could help, then add a good thick mulch down to help retain the moisture when you water. Also, if you haven't kept up on pruning your canes your plants may be trying to just produce more then they can because they are stressed and are trying to produce as much seed as possible. I hope this helps, thanks for watching :)

you might want to thin them out. If you have alot of canes, you can cut out 2/3 of them and top off the remaining canes at eye height. The canes will eventually fatten up and the fruit gets bigger. At least this helped me out!
