@@andysurvival346 Most likely he would have vocal problems when he reached his 40s, he sang high notes extremely brilliantly but in certain live shows that I analyzed, Ray used to sing high notes quite stridently at certain times and with a lot of glottal effort and you could tell by the degree of tension noticeable muscle in his facial expressions but he was always fantastic in his short time of life until he was 34 years old, this has also always been a constant in the performances of many metal and rock singers as a whole in this style of singing, with the exception of Ronnie who always sang with a very powerful voice in the high notes but with enormous muscular control, in a very natural way and without any tension throughout his career, even singing with a lot of harmonic distortion in the throat and using a lot of the chest voice register in the upper notes acute.

Interesting how Ray and Eric were with Sabbath and Jake was with Ozzy, and then all three came together to form the incredibly awesome but underappreciated Badlands. They should have been as big as GNR -- tragic. Interestingly Ray and I share the exact same birthdate (m/d/y) -- I feel some kind of kinship with his soul.

I was 18, living on a Thoroughbred Horse Farm in Saratoga Springs NY (The Rich Farm!) With our close, personal fambly friends. I had tickets to see Sabbath with Glenn Hughes at The Glenn Falls Civic Center. About 3 weeks before the Show, Glenn melted down and was off the tour..I was crushed as I am a huge fan of Glenn from Trapeze & Purple. I guess it took them a while to find the Great Unknown Ray Gillen, so they paused the tour and skipped us Never got to see Ray matty NYC

Ray Gillen, a real hero vocalist. Left us way too soon. I got to see him Black Sabbath. What a great surprise he was to me that night. I was expecting Glenn Hughes, not that I didn't like Glenn, I just had no idea who Ray was until I pestered just about everyone in the audience who he was because I knew that wasn't Glenn's vocals lol. Ray's soaring vocals, full of energy was unmistakably not Glenn's. Again, I love Glenn very much.

@@SJ-ty5rw Then he changed his mind, because in a last recent interview he was asked who was the best singer he had worked with before and he chose Ronnie, he even explains in detail some personal problems and disagreements he had with Dio and what made the same leaving the band in 1982. Even if that were the case, Iommi was a genius musician but he was not a vocalist and never had any training in vocal physiology at the level of a graduate singing teacher to critically analyze someone's vocal structure , his opinion was more a matter of personal taste than something related to the structure and technique of singers in general and that only really serious singing professionals understand.

@@SJ-ty5rw Just ask any professional vocalist which singers are the most complex and difficult to emulate in terms of the difficulty of their songs, the vast majority will say Ronnie James Dio and even excellent singing teachers like Zach Ansley and Ken Tamplin also claim the same thing, mostly the Ken who has done many covers of Glenn Hughes, Dio, Freddie, Ian Gillan and many others.

Wow, Ray is a great singer, I'm sorry I missed him for the last 38 years. I've been a sabbath fan since 1974, my friends dad bought every new album and we'd play em all on the suitcase record player. My first record club got me my first 3 sabbath albums, all Dio era and still fantastic. I find the original song, Black Sabbath, is a great standard for discernment. The Ian Gillan Born in Hell tour has the best challenge for Ozzy, at 55:00 Ian begins his cover, I think it's the best until Ozzy's come back on the Reunion double album, after Ozzy's singing lessons that secured the #1 in my book as best sabbath singer ever. I would however have paid to see Ray Gillian, very good and more range than anyone else. @@pizzaman6926 So what if Dio was in Sabbath? I think it's time to let go of the whole "best-of-all-time"-schtick and realize that there is no number one. There have been people who were technically just as good as Dio. Don't worry, there's no shame in that. It doesn't make his work any less amazing.
@luamoliveira3467
@luamoliveira3467 Жыл бұрын
@@hastobe303 There was no vocalist as technically good as Dio among rock and metal vocalists and you know it very well, try to inform yourself with the deep technical analyzes made by excellent vocal critics today and you will know within the parameters of vocal physiology Dio was the best vocalist rock/metal and the most vocally consistent, I say this because I have a degree in vocal pedagogy and for years I have been making technical observations of most vocalists in both rock and metal; He is a virtuoso vocalist compared to others, a master of compression and vocal resistance and his lower register is not only better among most rock/metal vocalists but also in comparison to Ray Gillen, where Ray clearly loses clarity and resonance in this register compared to Dio for example and anyone in their right mind can notice this; Ray Gillen has the greatest range in mixed voice among Sabbath vocalists but Dio has a much greater range in chest voice, where he sustained high notes in chest voice up to G5 with or without distortion with relative ease in his prime and most of metal vocalists can't sing anything above B4 on this record; But why did Dio get that unbelievable chest voice range for a male voice? Simple, as I said earlier, his level of muscle understanding, his vocal endurance and his fantastic breathing support, which he has even completely mastered over the years, clearly means that he can hit these notes with total mastery and resonant power without losing the musical dynamics; Dio was not only an extremely technically superior vocalist to Ray Gillen but also in relation to every rock/metal vocalist that has ever been analyzed.
@hastobe303
@hastobe303 Жыл бұрын
@@luamoliveira3467 First off, and no offense meant, don't go about telling people to educate themselves according to your perception. It is insulting to me and in the end makes you look bad. I know his vocals have been analyzed but so have many others. And you have a degree in this and I have a degree in that and yada-yada... On to the matter. I don't know very well that he was the best ever, otherwise I wouldn't have written what I did. I never stated that Dio wasn't a virtuoso vocalist. I only said that I believe that certain other rock and metal singers were as well, and to the same degree. Do you also hold to the notion that there is one best rock guitarist of all time? Is there a best ever rock drummer? Is there a single microphone that is superior to all others in recording instruments? Is there a single pickup for an electric guitar that is better than any other? The answer to all of those questions is no. I may be wrong in my assessment that Gillen was at the same level as Dio (although I believe I'm not) but I am very correct when I state that Dio was not the one and only best vocalist ever. I'm not talking about range either. I'm talking about general vocal technique. Range certainly has a part in it but also body support, breathing, tone, voice placement, vowel placement, ability to project emotion, the whole kit. How a singer chooses to utilize these aspects and keep it consistent and healthy. There's just about as much wrong with using mixed voice as there is to using chest voice. And for what it's worth, I think Gillen sounds more comfortable in the lower range than Dio does. There are probably more than several singers in rock music that I would put in the same pantheon as Dio based on those parameters, but that pantheon is nevertheless at the very top. So no, the more I educate myself the more I come to realize that Dio was not the greatest rock or metal vocalist ever. He was one of them.

Haha..not even close.There voices are totally different.Ray actually sounds a a bit like Glenn Hughes on a few songs and that is of course because Glenn sang them on the album.

Fine voice and impressive technique. It would have been nice to have an album or two with Ray Gillen. By no means inferior to Tony Martin - and far, far superior to that pathetic crooner Glenn Hughes.

Ray and Tony Martin were the best vocalist for BS. Ozzy sucked. Dio was good but lyrics sucked. Ian not a good fit. Glenn not a good fit. Tony and Ray awesome.
