I think it’s very interesting that Max is the one reading the Long John Silver letter. In season one, Max and Silver were nobodies trying to get away from Nassau, surviving by the skin of their teeth, and they worked with each other occasionally. But now they made something of themselves in Nassau and they’re at war with each other. Max became Nassau’s merchant queen and Silver is crowned the new king of the pirate revolution. Their relationship and the way they parallel each other was always fascinating to me.

This episode of TV is how a story should be told in this medium. It’s a perfect marriage of writing & directing, editing & music, drama & action. The framing of the action with one of the best conversations put on screen is a highlight, creating an atmosphere that we are watching a historical battle play out in front of our eyes. The last 5 mins of this ep telling the creation of Long John Silver with Billy writing the letter interweaved with Max reading it, while the pirate kings and queens gathered at the table might be my fav TV scene. People throw out perfect/masterpiece episodes a lot. In truth there’s only a handful and this is one of them.

What this show did with weaving historical pirates into the fictional story of Treasure Island is brilliant. The scene with Flint and Silver‘s conversation happening with the battle put over it is my favorite scene in the show. Once it was revealed that Dobbs led the English into a trap this episode turned from great into perfection. The ending scene with Max reading out the letter about Long John Silver gives me chills every single time I see it. This episode left me speechless and this was the first time I’ve cried (or at least shed a tear) watching an episode that wasn’t because it was emotional or anything but because of how in awe I was about what I had just witnessed. On the topic of Max, I always like to remind myself of the phrase „knowledge is power“. If you have certain information you can hold over anyone then you essentially cannot be ended. Silver already showed that in season 1 with him memorizing and burning the way to the urca gold, and this is why she’s my favorite female character in this show because she KNOWS the game she is playing and she’s moving every chess piece in a way that she will come out on top. She hears probably more than any other person on the island, or in this whole story for that matter, and she uses that to her advantage. I cannot for for her journey in season 4, you will undoubtedly see and understand why she is fricking amazing. Nice bonus that she’s pretty hot too though xD
@ljsilver16923 жыл бұрын
I agree. There are many great players of the 'game' in this show but for me Max is the best at playing. The fact that she started at the very bottom of life has taught her patience, resilience and humility, which are all key traits needed to succeed in that game. People like Eleanor, Jack and Flint all are good at it, but all have key flaws also.
@Drummer4President3 жыл бұрын
Max is the smartest because as both a poc and a woman she has to be subtle about how she goes about things. I definitely think she learnt from Eleanors mistakes.

My boy is becoming a legend, so proud haha. Seriously the arc of Long John Silver is one of the greatest I've seen. Aspiring writers should study his character progression in how to write an arc. Also like to think Jack & Anne learnt from their 'brother' and executed the classic seal team Vane maneuver when Anne led the vanguard through the water
@gemelwalters29423 жыл бұрын
mmm...I think Jack was capable of coming up with that himself. That's very different from what Vane did. Waiting offshore to strike vs boarding mid-battle to frustrate the line and cause confusion. That's more tactical and sounds like something Jack read up on to prepare after he asked Flint to Captain the ship
@ljsilver16923 жыл бұрын
@@gemelwalters2942 "Well actually...." really buddy lol. But in all seriousness, it's not inconceivable that Vane pulled off similar tactics when they were younger. @@ljsilver1692 sure, I just don't understand why you automatically credit that to Vane lol as though Jack has no merits of his own. @@gemelwalters2942 I think the point the OP was making was that it's a romantic notion of Jack & Anne just finding out Vane has died but his spirit lives on in them, exemplified in the immediate battle. Woods put Eleanor in charge guys. She didn't overstep or try to steal power. I know it's been emotional losing Vane but I think you are missing a bit. It was in fact shady moving up Vanes sentence but she said why she did it, to protect Rogers. Not some sneaky plot to take over. Rogers rescinded the pardons after his conversation with Flint and said anyone engaged in piracy would be hanged. Either way Eleanor has no way to legitimately replace Rogers, her power is only temporary and dependent on Rogers succeeding. If he fails or dies she hangs or becomes a wanted fugitive. She's also in no way happy about Vane's death, that much is obvious.

Welcome to the final season of the best and consistently outstanding told series ever. And that until the end. Because that's where the book begins. The cool thing is that Billy really creates a fictional character in the moment he turns John Silver into Long John Silver. Because this character, in addition to the real existing pirates (and Woods Rogers is also real), is really fictional. Like Flint. So you can already speak of a meta-level somewhere. Unfortunately, I think it's a pity that you both dehumanized Elenor and only accuses her of evil intentions. You thought she was great at the beginning, basically she hasn't changed much. 1. She has always loved sincerely. 2. Only Nassau was more important to her and 3. to impress her father. In the end, Nassau was only important to her for this reason. For Nassau, she betrayed her loved ones when there was no other option for her. Than Vane killed her father. She lost her city. So what is left for her? Only sincere love and sincere justified hatred against Vane whom she once loved. She has quenched the hatred, but also acted in the sincere interest and love for Rogers. She has linked both. But you don't see that. You only see the mean piece of crap. But this is simply not true.
@rachelespiritu42153 жыл бұрын
What really gets me is that when Flint tells Abigail about Billy's backstory in 2x08, the fact that his parents were political agitators seemed like a total throwaway line. But now, Billy has written a whole legend into existence, a whole tribute to the power of controlling the narrative. And of course, it's even funnier if you've read Treasure Island and you know where it's all leading.

Eleanor and Max both tend to betray people to gain advantage, yet fans seem to like Max more. I think the main reason why (aside from Vane), is that Max does it so that she won't end up in the awful place she was before. She never wants to feel that powerless again, though she also wants what's best for Nassau, so that the circumstances of its people will improve so that no one else will ever have to experience what she did. Meanwhile, Eleanor has nearly always been in a position of strength by virtue of being the Governor's daughter. Yes, she managed to carve out a place among hard bastards and that's admirable. Yet, her actions have, it seems to me, more often been motivated by ego and revenge than from a sense of duty to Nassau or from fear borne of past mistreatment. And that, I think, is why people prefer Max over Eleanor.
@gemelwalters29423 жыл бұрын
it's not that complicated, they dislike her because she was at odds with Vane lol Anyone who doesn't blindly put Vane on a pedestal usually appreciates Eleanor's position even if they don't agree with her. You mention Max wanting what's best for Nassau, ignoring Max was ready to leave Nassau behind. She cares about Nassau only in so far as it provides a safe haven as you have already admitted. When Eleanor and Flint wanted to save Nassau, no one, including Max cared. And while Eleanor was the daughter of the governor, she is still a woman in the 1700's. Like Max, this is the only place where she wields any power and that power wasn't handed to her by her father. If you did listen carefully then you know she was abandoned there by her father as a teenager because she wasn't the son he wanted and she made the place prosperous.
@fly38113 жыл бұрын
I agree with that assessment, although the Vane aspect also plays a crucial role in people's opinions on Eleanor. I think it's also natural for people who has seen someone suffer the way Max did in S1 to root for her. IMO Max does care about the people of Nassau more than Eleanor. Eleanor always ruled over them whereas Max was one of them, arguably the lowest of them. So there's a deeper connection there for Max as opposed to Eleanor who sees Nassau more as her life/business goal.

The first time I watched it, as it was getting released, I initially disappointed and was wondering about the monster/villain behind the mask that Woods Rogers wears. Because flint in season 2 talking about everyone is a monster/villain to someone else and in season 3 wood Rogers mentioned talks about his book and how you don’t put everything in your book that does is frowned by acceptable society. And please be careful on what you wish for or want in this series because sometimes you will get what you wish/want, maybe not in the way or how you want, but you get what you wish for. I can guarantee you that in season 4 you will be saying “I wish/wanted this, but not this way. All the choice/decisions and sacrifices that lead up to season 3 finale and to this point of season 4 I wished for/wanted this but not in this way.” The reason I can pretty much guarantee it is because anyone is a massive fan of this show pretty much felt that way

@Einomar3 жыл бұрын
Nikki, Long John Silver and Captain Flint are characters from the book Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, published 1883. This show I guess can be seen as kind of a prequel to the book :).

John Silver is a funny, charismatic schemer. Long John Silver - who is finally truly here - is all that, but also TERRIFYING. He is so calm and collected about having convinced a man who should by any logic hate him to go on a suicide mission for him instead. He is so brilliant at emotional manipulation that he is certain that Dobbs will die for his approval. The most telling thing to me is that NO ONE questions Silver's place at the round table during the ending. Silver is the quartermaster of the walrus! Each of Teach's six ships has a captain and a quartermaster, and they don't have a place at the table. And Silver has recently betrayed more than one person at that table. That is not a plot hole, it is what Long John Silver is. His ability to convince almost anyone to do almost anything is where he truly does stand alone, and in some ways it makes him more dangerous than both Flint and Teach.

"In a world that's built on thievery and destruction"...so our world, lol! No better description of literally the American continent. Explorers, aka pirates! Actuality worse than pirates because a lot of wholesale killing preceded any "treasures" found. It's amazing we have any desire to be kind to one another given our human history.

I've held all my comments to this point. If you two haven't already watched it, please don't go into episode XXXI without a graphic content warning. I straight up almost chucked my phone outside when it happened. I don't ever want to rewatch that episode, so I'll be skipping your reaction to it, respectfully, but even for Starz, that was too brutal. I hope you both get a chance to leave the screen and take care of yourselves. It's not worth entertaining us if it leaves you as impacted as it did me. I found y'all through the Chernobyl reactions and every time Nikki cries, I do.

In the way Billy built Long John Silver, I was a little baffled at the time because you already have the threat of Flint coming in. Everybody on that island know that Flint is coming in for revenge with all the wrath and fire of Hell. So you didn't have to build another guy.

Because it was Billy. We all know how he feels about Flint. It was to prop Silver up, but also a little "fuck you" to Flint imo

@@johnnyskinwalker4095 Oh yeh by this point of the show my feel was Billy was done with Flint. I think it was during his duel with Teach, when Ben Gunn was questioning who Billy wanted to win and Billy said something along the line of "I wanted to be there when the world catches up to him" - that's when I knew

@@jays4402 I guess yea it was a sign of hostility but never thought he would purposely go out of his way to work against him from that point on

@@johnnyskinwalker4095 I always viewed it as more of a two birds one stone situation. Billy wants to cause unrest in Nassau so needs to create a villain to be feared, at the same time why not try to diminish Flint's power, even just a bit. For me the straws have been piling on Billy's back from S1 so to speak and spoilers: that final straw lands in 4x2

Does Nikki realize that Edward Teach is famed pirate Captain Blackbeard? Granted production didn't embolden his beard with burning incense as tradition dictates, but they did a great job casting the role. When I imagine Blackbeard, I just think 'Hades' and find the imagery appropriate. A large dark figure roaming the decks armed with a saber in one hand, flintlock in the other, engulfed in an amorphic black cloud of doom. That would've been appropriate.
