Black sapote are really beautiful trees. Good to see that the runt is pushing new growth.

Fantastic to see flower buds forming on your healthy Black Sapote tree…especially being outside all winter. I’m sure you’ll nurse your other one back to good health 🙌🏾🌱

Thanks, Joe. I'm really pleased to see buds forming on this Black Sapote. Yes, it's suprising they can tolerate our winters better than I would have thought, although now it has flower buds I may bring it inside at some point. The other one is already back to good health, just needs time to regrow it's foliage.

The large one looks incredible Dom, I'm very jealous lol. Wonderful to see flower bud forming, great news

Cheers, Brett. I'm really excited because I thought they would never flower because they're not grafted plants. Now I think there's a slight possibity of one-day getting this to fruit here in the UK.

@@MoebiusUK they fruit on very small plants so you might get a small fruit straight away. It's quite possible that it's an air-layer which would explain why its flowering already 😁

@@lyonheart84. Apparently D.nigra is dioecious, so I sure hope it's an airlayer from a fruiting tree. _"Black sapote is usually dioecious, meaning that some trees produce only male flowers and no fruit and other trees produce female or bisexual flowers and fruit. Some trees may produce both male and female (or bisexual) flowers on the same tree"_ I guess i'll just have to wait and see, EDIT: I'll probably send the nursery in Italy an email and ask.

Wow, the second one is looking really healthy! Incredible to see it flowering! Hopefully, you can get some fruit to set someday 🤞

Thanks, Peter. I'm really pleased about the smaller one as it's new growth was unexpected and I think it'll catch up with the other specimen, I'm so happy it's showing flowerbuds and hope oneday I'll be able to do a UK grown Black Sapote video. 🙏🏽

Very interesting specimens! Black sapote are even rarer than white sapote, especially in the UK. I have a couple of small plants which are doing alright this year, but couldn't imagine that they can at least flower here. Amazing! Keep it up!

Thank you so much for the encouragement 👍🏽 I didn't expect them to be able to flower here either but I'm hopeful these buds will develop. .... I'd love to grow a "chocolate pudding fruit" here. 😂

Wonderful to see your Black Sapote flower Dominic. I read that Black sapote is not related to white sapote, although they share similar names, they are distinct fruits. Black sapote is a unique species of persimmon. Surprisingly, I read that the white sapote (Casimiroa edulis) is actually a member of the citrus family.

Mike, I was shocked to see flower buds on this plant. Gives me hope of one day growing my own 'Chocolate pudding fruit' here in Britain. The Citrus genus and Casimora genus are in the Rutaceae family of plants. So White Sapote can be thought of as a cousin of citrus fruits. You're right, Black Sapote are a form of Persimmon (Diospyros). One might think, because of its common name, they were in the 'Sapotaceae' family (Like Mamey Sapote etc) but they're not. The 'Diospyros' genus actually belongs to the 'Ebenaceae' family of plants and are related to the Ebony tree.

Do you know if anyone managed to have black sapote to fruit in northern europe? I have 2 sapote malay (yet another sapote that have nothing in common with others) seedlings that are doing well. But they have not passed winter yet :)

I don't know anyone to have successfully fruited a Black Sapote in Northern Europe but I suspect it's possible. Mine proved just cold-hardy as my White Sapote (although they're unrelated) and survived all-winter outdoors last year. The difficulty with this species is finding a plant with male and female flowers. I've not heard of the common name, 'Sapote Malay' ... Is this a Sapodilla or maybe a Mamey Sapote?

@@MoebiusUK My mistake I mixed some names. It is "Sapote Lucuma"
