I love loquat trees. More people should know about them, the flowers have a wonderful perfume, the leaves are tropical looking and the fruits delicious. Here in Portugal I have a little collection of them in front of my house. I have Peluche, Golden Nugget, Champagne, Tanaka and Algerie. The trees are very young but the golden nugget and tanaka have little fruits forming. I have just today ordered an Early Red loquat tree. Thanks for encouraging UK growers to grow them.

ikr Loquats are wonderful. I agree, the aroma of the flowers are something special and the fruits so good. Of course, you have the perfect climate for them in Portugal. The UK can be a little more challenging for them but it's still possible to get them fruiting here. You have some wonderful varieties, I hope to pick up an Early Red myself when next in mainland Europe. Best of luck with your trees. 👍🏽

The fingerlimes and fingerlime hybrids are so fun to grow. There's a great deal of variation among the different Named varieties and hybrids.
@MoebiusUKАй бұрын
Thanks, Gary. I agree, they are fun to plants to keep and grow. The variation is interesting and they seem to produce good crops of fruit in relatively small containers. ..... I just remembered I left many rarities outside overnight and it's currently -1C. Hope they'll be OK.
@garycard1456Ай бұрын
@@MoebiusUK Fingers crossed they're OK! I would not risk unprotected citrus outside with prolonged overnight temperatures at or below 1 degrees Celcius. The frosts are not as severe where you are (a built-up area). But I find that, where I am, which is on the outskirts of a Surrey village settlement, the overnight temperatures are several degrees colder when there's no cloud in the sky. So, for example, if the overnight temp for my area is forecast to be minus 1 degrees Centigrade, my digital IR thermometer registers minus 3 or minus 4. If you could get two 6 metre by 10 metre plastic tarpaulins and enclose your plants under those two layers, weighing down the tarp edges with anything heavy like housebricks, sandbags, bin liners filled with sand./gravel/soil, or 5 litre plastic bottles filled with water, I guarantee that you'll not have ice forming on on your plants even during those Arctic winter freezes lasting a whole week or even a fortnight. The tarpaulin (or two tarpaulins, as two layers are better than 1) trap a relatively warm 'bubble' of air (radiated heat from the ground) around the plants. I say relatively warm, because the temperature under the tarpaulin could be 5 degrees C above freezing, which, although not exactly warm, is 'too warm' for ice formation, and that's what really counts with subtropicals (obviously, for anything ultratropical, one could see damage with temps under 10 degrees C. But, for subtropicals like citrus, 5 degrees C is fine).
@MoebiusUKАй бұрын
@@garycard1456 Great advice, Gary. Yes, subtropicals are easily do'able (with a little effort) in our climate. Tropicals tend to require a greenhouse with heating or bringing indoor. Ultra-tropicals are beyond what I would attempt in the UK. I'm currently doing hard-landscaping at my allotment. I plan to plant mostly exotics there. When I visited earlier today I noticed many of my neighbours plants had severe frost damage. I can tell already that I will need temporary covers to protect any in-ground exotics I plant there.

Hi, thanks for your comment, I didn't get the name wrong though. 'Nikitskaya Bordovaya' is a synonym for the 'Nikitas Gift' variety. Thanks, Brett. The fruit is small but I don't mind considering the poor location of the tree. I imagine the 'Mango' name comes more from the appearance. I remember my Wabash had a more Tutti-Fruitti, mixed tropical fruit flavour than the KSU-Atwood I've been eating this week, which tastes like a really good quality banana. Atwood also changed from sweet to very sweet after being in the fridge for a few days. Scale insects try to attack pawpaw trees but I think it doesn't agree with them. Mostly I've found the desiccated exo-skeletons of the insects which tells me the Pawpaw tree may have a natural defense to these sap-suckers

I've left them on because I still have 4 large Atwood in the fridge. ... I'll wait till they drop naturally which I expect will happen next week. Yes, all my garden experiences partial shade at some point in the day because the houses opposite block light. Your trees will have more than enough light for them to thrive. This Mango however gets almost no direct light because of the persimmon tree. ... Also, the raised bed dries out extremely quickly in summer which has also held back it's growth. It truly is, Logan. I love visiting this nursery in Italy and exploring their citrus plants. It's a long drive for me but worth it.

I love seeing all those flowerbuds. They are such a beautiful colour too. All of mine are just plain white.
