Back in the early 1980's I used to see Greg Boyington hanging out at air shows selling his books and other memorabilia. He was as colorful in person as was the portrayal of him in Black Sheep Squadron. It was definitely fun to watch him do cameo's on Black Sheep Squadron.

I encountered Robert Conrad about ten years ago, when I had a BG job at Warner Brothers. He was visiting Stephen J. Cannel at a soundstage nearby. He walked by me,dragging his foot along.I was shocked at his appearance.I nodded at him,he nodded back.

Robert Conrad was driving drunk in California in 2003 when he crossed the centerline and was involved in a head on collision. He was partially paralyzed on his right side, He was never the same again, and that incident took a lot out of him on several levels. I remember his classic race against Gabe Kaplan in "Battle of the Network Stars".

I wouldn't say Robert Conrad "died too soon." He lived 42 years after "Blacksheep" ended and passed on at age 84. I was unaware that Robert Ginty and Jeff MacKay had passed. Now, those two died relatively young and "too soon." Probably my favorite episode was from the first season, "Anyone for Suicide?" where a few of them go on a secret mission to sink a ship in a narrow strait. It involved landing on an out-of-service airstrip on a Japanese-held island to wait for word on when the ship would be near the strait. Robert Ginty had a prominent role in that one, as did Robert Conrad, Dirk Blocker, and James Whitmore, Jr. There may have been another pilot on the mission (John Larroquette?) but I am not sure enough to say and I couldn't find the information beyond the cast for the entire episode.

When I was 13, the whole cast in costume came to San Diego for a fundraiser towards a young boy paralyzed playing football. I followed Robert Conrad into the airport bar at Montgomery Field and used my Kodak instamatic to get pictures with him all the while trying not to get thrown out. To this day I regret not getting photos of John Larroquette...

I remember when Robert Conrad appeared on a TV talk show to promote the show around the time it first went on the air (I don't remember which talk show it was). He was dressed in a Marine Corps flight suit that he wore in the show. He said he hoped the series was successful, one reason being he needed the money. The late Frank Walton, who served as the intelligence officer of the real Black Sheep, wrote a book on the squadron around forty years ago, called "Once They Were Eagles." He mentions the TV show and took a rather dim view of it, calling it, "the usual Hollywood hokum, featuring drunken brawls and jiggly nurses," while the pilots were portrayed inaccurately as "fugitives from courts-martial." Apparently, some of the Black Sheep veterans were not happy with the real Boyington being involved with the show, and they let him know about it. He responded, "I only did it for the money." I've been to Boyington's grave at Arlington National Cemetery, he is buried in section 7A, which is also where Marine Corps ace Joe Foss is buried. Other well known men buried in that section include film star Lee Marvin, legendary boxer Joe Louis, General Jimmy Doolittle, ABC newsman (and US Army veteran) Frank Reynolds, and former Marine Corps commandant General David Shoup.

Recall how an Me109 pilot escorted a badly crippled B17 safely to the channel: "The Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler incident" And I am friends with 2 sisters in Tx who's father, a B17G pilot, was also escorted back to the channel and safety. For the most part both sides knew they were doing a job. They were professionals. It was good show the first season. They made a major mistake bringing Red West who was a fine actor but it took away a lot of believability having his sargeant character beating up officers every weak. That wouldn’t fly too long. They also had pilots just disappear with no explanation. It became more of a soap opera.

You didn't mention that Anne Francis was in Forbidden Planet or her own TV show Honey West. Pretty poor tribute video.

Jeff Mckay played only one role on JAG, Master chief Roberts father of Lt. Bud Roberts Jr. And he played 3 different characters on Magnum PI. You need to do better and more accurate research.

This the role Conrad really was looking to sink his teeth into. Although he is know as the James West character, he said after 4 years of that kind of action, it was enough. The vast majority of fans see him as West; he like playing Boyington. Go figure.
