I first saw the massed band,pipes and drums in Kansas City in 1963. To this day the sound of the pipes lights a fire in my belly! I remember a passage in the program that stated " It's takes seven generations and seven years to make a piper". Ah for the good old days!

My grandfather everytime he heard the pipes he cried .....I asked my father why and he said .....son when the old man heard them it brought two things to him .....going over the top and funerals .....but you are right they do tug at the heart strings and to a jock ....they stir the emotions beyond belief and before and going into battle they steel the heart and they let the other guys know that .....We be coming and it the jocks so you are warned .......even on D Day Lord Lovat had his piper (against all the rules ) pipe his brigade on the beaches ......and as we all know it had the desired effect. Your country and mine will always stand together we are maybe small but we stand

My Granddad was a pipe major in ww1. He also served some time in ww2. He never complained nor spoke of the wars He served in. My Dad was a merchant seaman through ww2. My mother was an electrician in the R.A.F. ww2. None of My parents spoke of the war. My mother was from shotts,My father from Liverpool. The pipes mean everything to me for memories of the highland games. Tears roll down my eyes. Many thanks to all pipers and drummers.

'Devils in skirts'. I'm English, but I have great respect and admiration for the Scots Nation. They have contributed so much to the history and culture of these beautiful Isles of ours, and have been prominent for centuries in the arts and the sciences. And their martial prowess is legendary. That is why today I am overjoyed that the Scots have voted to remain within the United Kingdom. We are four Nations, and Glory to that; but our Union is greater than the sum of its four parts.

Aye maybe so ......maybe it should be noted here that the Watch really now are only a mere battalion of the RRS ......if you now look at the TOS they were a cap badge .....we never did.....we wore the red hackle alone ......and controversially here hopefully one day England will get home rule lol.....make of that as you will

From Constantinople to Scotland, the art of military drumming has made a journey throughout Europe, gaining in every country more and more sophistication to get the perfect accomplishment at the end of the trip, as we can see here. Bravo gentlemen: that's not just drum "beating" ("batterie" as we say in France), that's real great music! Great class! You are honouring your ancestors and mankind in many ways. I salute especially Tony Oxley, who was a member of the Black Watch Military Band and is one of the greatest modern jazz drummers of the world and all time. Long live the Auld Alliance! A French drum teacher and author.

The drum major you hear right at the beginning I first met back in 96 or 97 at Milton bridge. I then knew him from the Black Watch when I served up in Fort George. I honestly can not remember his name but I know this. Back then I would have trusted him with my life. Absolute salt of the earth proper decent guy. I made the mistake of giving up the pipes after 10 months training. See I was sick of practicing from morning til night and now I'm regretting it. After 18 years of not holding a chanter I have started learning again. I have to start from scratch again but I have an ex pipe major and old friend of the Black Watch in the pipe band I am currently in. What a lucky man I am. Lol. To aw you pipers and drummers of the Black Watch. You do all the Scots proud.

I believe it was 1963, I first heard the Black Watch playing similar medleys c/w a regimental brass accompaniment. Perhaps an overdub in this case, but otherwise, switching things up, with a little brass tossed in once and awhile, (not too much), is always a treat in my book. Certainly no worse than some contemporary bands adding their token bongo player to the mix. Good grief... Anyways, it was great to hear, a few old school sets, without all the modern day tweedledee/tweedledum overkill. It's not that I don't appreciate more demanding tunes and complex medleys. I think we all do. I'm just saying, it was great to once again hear and see the Black Watch Pipes & Drums - in full regimental dress - doing their thing, under 100 bpm :) BTW...ty for the post :)

@Crescent City Kid it happened on a regular basis until WWI. During the Great War pipers played the troops in action in many occasions, altough they were supposed to stay away from the firing line . Even in WWII we have examples of pipers playing under fire - Millin , Kirkpatrick. I'm not sure about the Korea . Last piper recorded to play in a fighting zone was PM Scott Taylor in Afghanistan , 2004. So, even if wer all agree that in modern combat it's pure folly to play the pipes in action, once in a while the Scots just go in their "och, what the f**k" mode and play nonetheless
@maconescotland8996
@maconescotland8996 2 жыл бұрын
@@marioguidotomasone1265 Due to the high casualty rate in WW1 pipers were forbidden to go into action playing in WW2. However, in some circumstances, commanders chose to ignore this instruction. Perhaps the most famous of these was Brigadier Simon "Shimi" Lovat, (aka 15th Lord Lovat) on D-Day. He told his personal piper, Bill Millin, that because it was an order from the English War Office it could be ignored..... as they were both Scots !!! A figure of lesser stature would not have gotten off with that !!!

Da habt Ihr Schotten doch ein sehr schönes Intrumet daraus gemacht und immer schöne stimmungsvolle Lieder damit gespielt. ob in Eure Kneipen, als Marschinsprument, oder für das Kriegshandwerk. Its not a regiment I am printing about here but a Canadian Scot, if ever a man deserved a Victoria Cross, this one should have had 2. He landed on D. Day at the British "Sword Beach", the only one wearing a kilt and his only weapon a set of bagpipes. He then proceeded to march up and down the beach, through a hail of metal, playing the pipes and inspiring the lads who had landed with him. Later he piped his battalion 4 miles to the Caen Canal to relieve units of 6 Airborne holding the bridge at Benouville (Pegasus Bridge) His name William (Bill) Millin, 4 commando, There is a fine statue of Bill Millin at Collville --Montgomery very close to were he landed at Sword (Ouistreham) Normandy. This was a man made of the stuff Kipling wrote about.
