From the sound of this, i wonder why this didnt take the Captain Marvel release spot. It would have added some more world building during the snap and perhaps give more development to prep for the eventual sacrifice in Endgame.

Written in a way to justify her existence but written so she has no real story importance (Thor/Rocket could have found Tony in space) I think she would have been better received if she was introduced post Endgame IMO.

I'm starting to think I'm one of the few who only expect this to be a footnote and am still excited. I only saw this as more Scarjo as BW and a chance to get some back story and not much more. If there was anything important about her that WOULD re-contextualize her character arc in the other MCU movies you run the risk of ruining the legacy of the character.

It's arguably a good thing that the movie feels removed from the flow of the MCU timeline. If you can watch it and not feel like it only works as a post Endgame film, then that means that it's potentially more accessible for new MCU viewers in the future and doesn't date itself or hinder itself.

I agree! I'd love for marvel to make space for more films and shows that aren't so directly tied to the Infinity Saga. Like, let's see what War Machine was up to in that story he kept telling at the Ultron party.

It's relative lack of ties to other MCU films should have made it a great starting point, if only it wasn't so.. mediocre. I had a new experience while watching it last night - for the first time ever during a Marvel film, I actually felt bored at times. If this was my first taste of the MCU it's great that nothing needs to be explained for it to make sense, but it wouldn't exactly leave me wanting more. Not a bad film, but so disappointing.

It would have been cool if this movie was a by the books Winter Soldier type with a twist reveal towards the end that this was actually set in a parallel universe. Maybe a mutant reveal on the news or tying in to the weapon x program that would sneakily lay the foundation for the multiverse crossover that's coming, and creating an air of ambiguity around Natasha's involvement in the future phases.

I thought the movie was worth seeing overall, for Florence Pugh's performance alone. I came out of this movie not caring much more about Natasha (I've never cared about her really at all), but super excited for more Yelena. They did a great job setting her up + she handles comedy and emotional beats effortlessly. I really want to see her on the next iteration of the Avengers team, and I hope they give her more of a spotlight than Natasha ever got.

Victory lap is a good term for this. However a better term may be Consolation Prize. Not being connected to current events in the MCU and releasing after the character has been killed off is head turning at the very least. Too bad for the great actress and character. I saw this yesterday and couldn't agree more with you more Dan. I wanted so much for such a highly anticipated movie for one of the MCU's more likeable characters. After seeing it I realized that what I wanted was for them to basically make a Bourne movie but with Black Widow being in the Bourne position - a super spy on on the run outwitting her chasers and ultimately getting the better of them. Oh well. Still enjoyed it though.

It is almost a "free standing" movie, with little Marvel knowledge required. However, I do think the COVID-19 delay did diminish the momentum that the character of Black Widow was experiencing. I did enjoy it and would recommend it. The closing credit scene (literally when the closing credits conclude) was intriguing.

Dan, love you, big fan. With that been said, why people still bother with "non-spoilers" review... If I really wanted to avoid spoilers, I just don't watch anything at all. Even trailers honestly. I kind of wish they'd leaned even more into the things that make it unique from the MCU: the spy movie stuff and the sister relationship between Natasha and Yelena. Those things worked really well for me, but there were also a lot of things in the movie that felt really forced and could have either been cut or written in a way that felt more natural.

A very subtle Disney plug in this movie. Near the beginning, you can see a very tiny snippet of the intro them for DuckTales 1987. You can see Webby. It's the part where she kisses a shark (though I don't think you can see the shark)

I saw this movie yesterday (7-11-21) and then I went to work. Afterwards I went to 7-11 and the cashier asked me what my day was like and I said I saw Black Widow. He asked how it was and I go, "well, it was pretty good" and he instantly was like "yeah right what do you really think of it? I saw that face you made." It was a great movie probably ranked right smack in the middle with a lot of great moments and new characters to explore. And the movie achieved what it was trying to and really wasn't about any villain and if they called that character some made up name instead of Task Master Marvel it would've avoided any criticisms cuz as Task Master that character was weak. For me it didn't take anything away from the movie but it is kinda of a waste of a great Marvel character in the future! But I hope we see more of all of her 'family' in the MCU and this was a great outro for Scarlett and a great intro for Florence!

My excitement for a black widow movie hit its peak after winter soldier. If it didn’t happen after avengers, it should have happened then. Out of the phase 4 line up, black widow feels the most out of place. I was hoping after endgame we would explore new ground, not re trend old ones.

Didn’t mind it, taskmaster was a little underwhelming but other than that I was just happy to get my marvel fix on the big screen and without having to watch it unfold over several weeks. You’re always going to struggle to really raise the stakes when you’re putting a movie midway through an established storyline…it’s not like she was going to die or have New York blow up again. Ultimately I take these movies at face value, some will build towards a big picture and others are filler…dropping little bits in for projects further down the line. 7/10

Out of all the reviews I've seen nobody loves it but no one hates it either. It's universally ok. I just don't feel the need to rush out to theaters for an ok film. It'll be on Disney Plus soon enough.

Hey Dan quick question. My girlfriend is not caught up with the MCU movies and has only seen up to Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I know BW is a prequel taking place in-between Civil War and Infinity War so would someone who is not caught up yet to Infinity War be able to watch it without having to catch up past Civil War?

Not Dan but yes. You don't need to watch past Civil War. It might actually be better, since your gf doesn't know what happens to Natasha.

Well, this review makes it seem like this film is exactly what I expected it to be. Now I’m just wondering if I’m disappointed by that or not. Maybe I’d be more disappointed if I didn’t already think that this film was coming out too little too late.

MCU movies fall into a classic Bell Curve and it seems this movie is where the bulk of Marvel movies end up which is not necessarily bad...just OK.
