Black Widow speedpainting using the Zorn color palette! Anders Zorn (1860-1920) has used blue in some paintings before, but when someone refers to the 'Zorn color palette' they generally mean a palette that consists of just 4 colors: yellow ochre, ivory black, vermilion and titanium white. Cadmium red light is commonly used in place of vermilion by modern day artists. Watch as Bobby tackles this speedpainting study using a limited color palette as he talks about the thought process behind each choice he makes along the way.
Bobby will be doing a live Q&A in the LightBox Expo Discord on Tuesday, July 13 at 12pm EST to answer questions about this speedpainting! / discord

I'm surprised that this isn't an artist challenge, using another artist palette to create a new piece. It kinda reminds me of the black & white only challenge but with just a couple more pigments allowed.

It could totally be a challenge you do yourself!! Try recreating your old artwork but with a different color story and see what you come up with! :) ~s

This was so interesting....did you set up the palette on a layer and color pick from the palette? Would love to see how you mixed the colors.

I color picked from the palette jpg and I’d adjust the saturation down sometimes or change the darkness/lightness as minimal as possible

When studying other artists, should I be using the original reference and trying to replicate how they painted it, or should I just try to repaint the painting as is?

painting their painting is called a "master study". tons of painters do this in school and in their free time. its super valuable. try copying the basic forms and colors of a master's painting like 10 times in a row over a week (same one over and over) and youll learn so much. IMO its easy to pick someone with a limited palette like zorn, cus you know the colors they're using. some paintings its hard to tell

Bobby, is it good if I fill a sketchbook in a week? (120pages). Am I drawing enough? Since January I filled only 10 sketchbooks and I feel like a failure.

I feel like you need to slow down perhaps and tackle some pages with much more thought and time to analyze.

@@BobbyChiu Agreed, Bobby. It’s not about the output, but the lessons learned. Instead of trying to fill up sketchbooks as fast as possible, take the time to focus on a topic. Having trouble with (for example) feet? Do feet studies at different angles. Your poses aren’t dynamic enough? Focus on your gestures. And along the way, take what you learned and apply it to your art
