I believe the positives he used to make the sandmold are 3D printed. The grain patterns are the print's layer lines showing up, highlighted by the paintjob. He probably printed it in 2 halves, as it's very convenient for making molds that way, and explains the direction of the layer lines. I've done the same thing myself, printing it that way for casting, so it looks pretty familiar.

The cast mold is seperate from the knife, but if you poured it strait on the tang, for sure it would
