John, I really enjoyed this series of videos. I am intrigued by the transformation of a short length of heavy stock to a fine tool with multiple parts. There are plenty of forging videos on KZbin, but you are my number one source for blacksmith instruction and overall information. Thank you John.

Wow, the fabrication of this is totally amazing, the skills you possess are truly inspiring. This is one of the most intricate items I have ever seen made on-line, and they work. Lol Take a bow John, you have earned it. And a special thank you for your response to my last comments.

I have made many tools, jigs, and fixtures for my woodworking shop, there is such a sense of satisfaction making them and then using them even though I often spend more time and money making instead of buying. Your dividers turned out great, I especially liked the finished end on the wing, such a nice touch without getting too ornate.

John, Great job on this project! There are some things that we make with our hands and some things we make with our hearts and this was certainly of the latter from you. Thank you for sharing this journey of millimeters that will last for years.

Funny... as a layman, even when you hear the old blacksmith's "Need a tool, make a tool." line, you tend to think in terms of more rudimentary tools. Sure, a blacksmith can make a hammer, axe, knife, nails, tongs, and stuff like that... but you don't automatically think of more refined tools like dividers. Great build, and really nicely executed. They look fantastic.

I understand your point, but try to forge a hammer or knife and you'll realize they are far from simple too. But the wing dividers are really really neat!

Lovely series, thanks! You could, when the dividers come back, make them suitable for marking metal by forging a tiny little fuller on the flat side where they meet and brazing in about 1/2~3/4" of tungsten TIG electrode. I keep some 3/32 tungsten in an old drafting pencil for marking in my shop. It stays sharp even longer than regular high-carbon steel -- tungsten is harder than a lawyer's heart.

I could. But I suspect I won't. If I wanted hard tips I would forge weld in tome tool steel during the initial forging.
