I really appreciate the reality of your demonstrations. I laughed when you said you thought it was going to take 2 hours and it took all day, isn't that typical of me. Thanks for all your contributions. Drew

John, about six or eight months ago i would have given videos like this an ultra-wide berth. but as the world of blacksmithing opens up for me, I've found myself making tool after tool after tool! it's fantastic! so this video has come at a great time.. but it's gonna have to get in the queue, I'm making a block out of layered 20mm mild steel to take hardy tools! i hot cut a 1" hole yesterday - by myself with my own made tools on a beefed up piece of railroad track. you've been a big part of that, so thankyou. cheers John

being german, not too many reasons to be proud of germany these days, but in this case of being the sole country where these clampies are available i make an exemption lol as to your channel, i am soaking up as much as i can whilst waiting for my forge to arrive...really awesome content and you are a great guy aswell..keep it up.

Isn't that how it always goes. We think, oh I'll knock this out in an hour, then 6 hours later.... Yep. Usually the case for me on things I don't do regularly.

You showed your FF experience. Lol when you checked the Hardy block you grazed it with the back of your hand. It's the little things that get my attention lol. Great video, not sure how I missed this one...

Another great video, John!! When you were bending the jaws of the clamp I noticed that the boss you had formed for the hinge almost touched the backside of the vise jaw. This might be something that others might needs tho be aware of.

Once assembled it will be centered and won't be an issue.

Now there is a handy tool! I shall make one for my small machineshop! The German link btw, is no longer valid ( Oct 16, 2018) I shouldn't be a problem milling these parts out of a 30 mm think slab of mild steel. Maybe give a it a set of hardened lill' jaws... Paddy

Would it be beneficial to make one of these as wide as the vise you're putting it in? Or not worth it?Seems like it might be more stable and grip better. Like having an entire vise that you could tilt at 45 degrees. Probably not necessary for filing but maybe for other purposes?
@BlackBearForge Жыл бұрын
At times it might be. But I've never actually seem anyone make one any wider

John, I've seen your most-used measuring device is an L shaped, steel square with a short gripping heel. I really like this device. Is this shop-made or is this available for purchase elsewhere?
@BlackBearForge4 жыл бұрын
it is a store bought square, modified by cutting one leg. I plan to make up a batch soon to have available in my Etsy shop

I see you quenching your punch often, as I do. Do you also recommend using coal dust as a lube to help prevent the punch from sticking? I've seen other Smith's do this and I don't know if it actually helps. Great video series. Thanks!!!
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын
Coal dust does work well to keep a punch from sticking. I also use punch lube from Quick and Dirty Toolworks

I've seen you use clamps to hold something in the vise at a 90 degree angle. Is it possible to make one of these that does the same thing?
@BlackBearForge Жыл бұрын
Possibly, but I haven't tried it personally
@bogomir676 жыл бұрын
Just thinking - you could make one from one piece with a spring like a spring fullering tool to connect the two.
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын
DF in the shop has a video on making one like that.
@reigninoel6 жыл бұрын
Just a thought that occurred to me, could one make these with one of the jaws having a hinged grip surface/insert, allowing it to adjust to/get a flush grip on workpieces of different thickness? I realise that would probably move it more towards a machining rather than forging project, but again, just a thought.
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын

If you do want to search the Internet, here is a link: www.google.com/search?q=feilkloben It does give you results in German, but these things are pretty frequently found in German machinist's shops (Schlosserei).
@BlackBearForge6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I wonder if any of these dealers ship internationally. It is also strange that what is common in one part of the world is hard to find in another.
@bogomir676 жыл бұрын
It's worth a try. Also, If someone in the US would place a larger order and then sell them off there, I am sure most of them would not wave off the business. Also, somebody could do a business partnership and import these things on a regular basis. And I hope that those new US customs penalties for EU steel and aluminium won't ruin the whole thing. Or maybe the gentleman who sells the "Rapid Tongs" can laser cut parts and make a you-finish-it product!

Is that why people do those? While I will always accept donations (there's a PayPal link in the description) 😉. Unfortunately I think my internet service is so slow it wouldn't work. I suppose I should test the theory sometime though
