I live in the States and had an interesting run-in with our gas company. Here, we are responsible for anything inside the house, they are responsible for outside. I got a bill saying we owed them over $300 for gas used because our meter had been broken for 2 YEARS. Now, they had been paid around $80 a month all that time for "maintenance", and our bill said they had actually read the meter all that time, so I told them I'd give them their $300 if they gave us back around $2,000 for not actually maintaining what they had been paid for (I know there are pipes and lines, etc...but hopefully you get the point). My husband is disabled so we get assistance with the bill, so I called our Senator's office and made the same arguement to them - they called the gas company too. The gas company said, "Sorry, our mistake." and ran away in a hurry. Thinking logically comes in REALLY handy sometimes.

We didn't pay them anything, my point was that if anyone owed anyone anything - it was them owing us for not delivering the service that we paid for ("reading and maintaining" a broken meter for two years). I was frankly shocked that they didn't consider this themselves but the mindset of corporate America shocks me as a rule. Thank you again, it was sweet of you to reply.

You don't always know who the electricity supplier is. The electricity supply is not the same as the electricity contract. The electricity supply is connected to a building and the electricity contract is connected to a person. If you take over a building, you don't take over the electricity account, but the supply is already there. So, when the lights come on, which companie's electricity are you using ?

I might try and watch this but I can tell from the description that BBB has got the terms of reference wrong to begin with. No common law buff would want to "become a straw man". The strawman is what they use to describe their "legal fiction" which is basically the paperwork version of yourself as defined by various official documents starting with your birth certificate. Likewise no common law buff would want to "stand under maritime law". They consider the modern legal system to be based on late medieval maritime law which was optimised for corporations to do trade. As such they prefer to "stand under" common law or the "law of the land" (as opposed to the maritime "law of the sea"). They perceive the common law of the land to be the ancient and just way of doing things. I don't think they see Magna Carta as part of maritime law so I am not sure why the description indicates they are an alternative as in Maritime Law/Magna Carta. I would like to see a well founded critique of the "common law movement" but I doubt this is it as it misrepresents their claims from the outset.

Interestingly, those who bill the consumer do not actully supply the electricity despite them saying they are "suppliers". They are private limited companies who only buy the electricity once they have you as a customer and add on their operational costs to the "retail" price they charge having paid the actual supplier the wholesale price.

A friend of mine had his gas meter removed, he still has to have annual gas meter inspections. You could probably get your leccy meter removed too but it would cut off your leccy supply, if you lived in a city or a block of flats that would be beyond stupid but out in the middle of nowhere running a solar panel array could replace domestic mains supply.

The point of MAgna Carta and British "law" was to set down in writing, rules to be enforced that would prevent the peasant using their vastly superior numbers to take the wealth from the wealthy. As a union rep one of the things that causes problems sometimes is a member will be adamant that they want to take a particular case against management or put forward a particular defence to a disciplinary, that I know will fail. Even worse is when another rep, who is less assiduous in their research, argues such a case. When I take a case I research it down to a fine detail; the facts, the policy and the law. My brother in law lives in a flat in a tower block owned by his city council, a couple of years ago the local authority decided (post Grenfell) to resite his gas meter from outside his flat door to his kitchen. His gas supplier stopped billing him for the gas supply, their explaination was bizarrely that his meter no longer existed !! The gas continued to flow for a full year. With my assistance, many attempts were made to try and rectify the problem, it took phone call after phone call to explain the situation until finally it was sorted after 12 months. I doubt if it was a single occurence in the tower block and I'm certain that not all residents were as honest as my brother in law and they continue to use free gas to this day.

Nor was it supplied by the electricity company. The owner didn't know, nor the rental company. I kept notes of phone calls and emails and never found out before moving out after 2 years.

Here in Australia our legal set up is very similar with meters, but in some years back when the utilities companies decided to install smart meters to every household, even though as the act gives you ( the consumer) the option to have a meter of your choice, the companies teamed up with the politicians forced to install the smart meters with all kinds of unlawful tactics, coercion, threats and so on to achieve their total installations of smart meters. That clearly shows that the utilities companies breach the law when the consumer chooses to remain with the "old" meter, but their choice is ignored and no legal action is taken by administrations against the companies to regulate in favour of the consumers, keeping in mind that the natural resources and bare essentials of life like water,gas,electricity is in reality the property of the people to provide for people under the management of elected administration for the best interest of the people with providing the essentials of life in priority rather than profit as the companies prioritise. So, you are not neutral my friend, you are ignoring the essence of the people are the highest authority that elect administrations to administer for their best interests. Companies and corporations inour day are ruthless in destroying lives of not so fortunate or low income families, giving no worth to life instead put profit before welfare of people all over the world is how i see it all.

Good point re the smart meters being forced. This was true however there was massive push back. The smart meters allowed them to charge more at certain times. With the push back from consumers and electric contractors, the cheeky parasites changed the way they billed the old disc meters, being they charged different rates per blocks. Ie the first 20 kWh at 20 cents the next block at 60 cents and so on It’s now better to have smart meters Cheeky far king carrnts They also smash you with the SEC ( standby electricity charge) being the charge they bill you for the availability of power at any time. So to really stuff these twats it’s best to get off grid with ups and solar etc. however I think if enough people go off grid they will charge you regardless if you are in an area that’s has the poles and wires Watch this space

As I was renting at the time of the smart meter push, I resisted with locking up my meter box, putting up "no trespassing"signs with related laws on it didnt stop them from annoying me with letters of threat etc that I answered with conviction stating the law and NOT regulation that they argued with, eventually got them off my back, without changing my meter until i moved out of there. My dream goal is to one day go off grid in the bush and become mostly self sufficient. Politicians have sold us out and enslaved us to corporations while lining their own pockets for quite some time and the masses are still asleep unfortunately. May your God bless you.

The meter is the property of the electricity supplier and the cut out the property of the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) which needs to be removed to isolate the meter for safe removal or replacement. A qualified electrician would need permission from the DNO to remove the cut out fuse. None of this is the property of the home owner.

Assuming the supplier agree to you having your own meter installed they would require it to have been calibrated to show power used same as the meter they fit. Then you keep your own meter readings and say every six months, you call transco or national grid give them the readings and try to make payment... An electrician cannot remove the meter by law, nor can we pull the fuse by law! The reason given to us is that the equipment does not belong to us and so it is theft and or trespassing, the correct procedure is that a request is made to the owner of the equipment i.e. the provider to remove the fuse for us and usually an isolator be fitted for us to safely connect back into. This situation is common when carrying out a Rewire or consumer unit upgrade within a domestic property 👍

In my, albeit limited experience of the County Court system, there are a number of serious flaws. Firstly, although court hearings are recorded, the cost of a transcript is very high. However, even if one pays for a transcript, it is impossible to check it for accuracy because there is no system through which the audio file can be obtained. This, very effectively makes it impossible to follow the reasoning behind the Judges decision with any degree of certainty. It also seems unfair that a company can refuse to send the person who produced and signed a witness statement in their defence and can, instead, send a barrister who then "only acts under instructions" and is permitted to avoid any consequences of their actions. (Nuremberg springs to mind).

Anybody who knows anything about electricity knows that if you remove the meter you disconnect your power. Removing your meter is only feasible if you have your own power source such as wind or solar. The reason people remove their meters when they provide their own power is to not provide greedy power companies with free electricity. By law if you supply excess power into the grid they do not have to pay you for it. So those of us who generate our own electricity have removed our meters so that the power companies can't get their hands on our Access energy unless they agree to pay for it.

You can't even move the meter yourself - you have to get the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) to move the incoming cabling for electrictiy or pipework for gas and the supply company to move the meter itself which is quite lengthy to arrange. Moving the electricty meter a small distance might be possible but with older cabling even moving it might be extremely dangerous.

Copy and send the letter recorded/registered delivery and keep as is your evidence that you tried and they didn't reply in time or at all. I could put a 4kw array on my roof, with batteries in the larder (if my Housing Association 'allowed' me to), and I would produce 2x what I 'consume' in a year - so becoming a 'net Producer', with a feed-in meter reading what goes in, & a consumer 'smart' meter trying to keep up, by going backwards. As the Law is written in 'Producer' & 'Consumer' Terms - what would I then be? Producer or Consumer? Does that have any bearing on who should provide the meter? The fact my Housing Association won't even 'allow' me to pay for a PV array myself, seems like it impinges on my 'Right to Improve' - but maybe I'm misreading that 'right' too? It is a 'social housing' issue imo - as it appears those in social housing aren't 'allowed' to get cheap electricity - even at their own expense for the hardware. A 4kw array with a 5kwh battery now costs under £5k installed now (the Housing association could do it cheaper - and does it free for other tenants). That produces 4000kwh (units) of electricity a year, worth about £1,150 a year (at today's prices) - so the array will pay for itself in under 5 years. Thereafter it is £1150 of FREE electricity every year for another 20 years or so (I'll be long dead no doubt). Costed over 25 years, it is electricity for 2p per kwh. I even offered to leave the array to the Housing association in my Will if they would install it. But still nothing. It's like denying me the right to get a better electric cooker (which would consume more electricity while cooking a full Sunday roast with all the trimmings, than a 4kw solar array would produce at mid day in mid-summer). Would you fancy fighting a pro-bono case for Housing association & Council House tenants to have the right to install their own PV+batteries if the H.A. won't/doesn't - along the 'right to improve' laws? If nothing else it's an interesting notion that the poorest are so often tied into the most expensive ways of having electricity, due to the landlords' reluctance to facilitate them.

The DNO (who supplies your electricity and the wiring to your house) and MOp (meter operator, who supply and manage the meter itself) will *not* give permission for a meter to be moved. They will either move your supply meter themselves or (more likely than not) refuse or charge you many thousands to do so (sometimes tens of thousands if there are extensive civils involved). You usually have to work around the existing incoming point of supply and metering even if you are undertaking building work, etc. There are technical reasons for this as well as legal/operational. Underground supply cables, especially old ones, can rapidly deteriorate on being moved and the risk of a short on the district distribution network is too high both in terms of the dangerous event (almost certainly an explosion) and its repercussions to the whole street, potentially some weeks down the line. The meter needs to be placed close to the point of supply along immediately after the main fuse. In essence the situation is *much* more restrictive, even in legitimate cases, than you are suggesting! Certainly that only adds weight to your arguments, of course.

The electricity act specifically states that you are welcome to change the meter to one f your own so long as they are contacted about it and agree to it and check it etc - they definitely won’t stop you from providing your own meter and I think they will continue to check it periodically as well to ensure it’s still safe and working correctly etc. My neighbour changed hers and moved it to a different place so she had more room in her kitchen and she had zero difficulties in doing so, the electric company approved all of it and the work was carried out by a qualified electrician (her brother) and like I said, there were no obstacles to her doing so.

Electricity and telephone services used to be a service fee only, but now we have a structure where our services are corporate for profit suppliers who raise prices regularly to where those in need of them are kept poor through extortion. This is entirely legal BUT not respectable. Not only this, but magistrates courts and police forces as well as councils are also incorporated for profit. No one to make the profit from but you. Expect a barrage of criminalising procedures on you to extract money in the form of cannot park here, cannot stand here, cannot walk your dog here, cannot use this park or walk through it, cannot use this once free road etc.

Had a gas metre that apparently didn’t work? I informed the gas company regularly yet for 2 years had no bill? Eventually was taken to court for owing £900. Was able to show that I’d contacted them regularly to tell them I’d not been billed for gas? Judge ruled that mistake was gas company’s so I ended up getting free gas for nearly 2 years. i've got national grid wanting to replace my gas meter because they've condemned it. British gas are trying to charge me as a business, even though its a 1 bedroom flat. Even Ofgen doesn't know whats going on anymore, its in limbo. I capped the supply myself 8 months ago (licensed gas engineer) but am still getting billed for 'read' readings. I was witness to a house being disconnected, western power removed the cable from the house, as the owner refuse to pay, after going to court the judge ruled in favour of the power company, the house owner had to pay the outstanding bills and a reconnect fee and a new meter

As far as telling us what we should or shouldn't do, the only things we shouldn't do are those things that violate natural (common) law, such as causing harm, loss, injury, ie. murder, assaut, rape, theft, trespassing, coercion and deception. As an electrician I've been asked many, many times to abstract electricity and every occasion I've refused, then explained just how ridiculously dangerous it is, followed by the ramifications of their stupidity. As you've correctly noted, it's not a right, only a service and rewiring meters for a complete stranger cones with a whole host of risks and prosecutions. So nobody in their right mind would fulfil that request. As much as I hate the current situation of high energy costs, not once have I considered rewiring and nobody else should do either, it's not only a false economy, but chances are you'd cause an electrical fire or worse...just don't!!
