Having the largest black population west of the Mississippi River, Houston is known as a center of African-American political power, education, economic prosperity, and culture. There is no denying, Houston is an emerging Black Mecca and for those African Americans who are considering relocating for better opportunities, Houston should be a strong candidate.
H-Town does not garner as much Black media attention as places like Atlanta or DC, but it’s starting to gain more popularity in Black America as a community with good schools, reputable health care, and excellent employment opportunities. If you are considering moving on to bigger and better things, you should think about joining the 250 people who relocate to Houston on a daily.

This comprehensive list has definitely convinced me that Houston is where I need to be! Lived in Dallas for a number of years, but never felt welcomed and also missed a feeling of black culture. Always felt so welcomed whenever I’ve visited Houston!

This is exactly why I left Dallas. I lived in htx for a few months during covid and never felt more at home. I'll be back permanently in just a few weeks. Can't wait! Dallas made me feel very unwelcome and it's so extremely expensive

I’ve from the Bronx New York and there’s always been a whisper in my ear telling me to go to Texas. I love it already and I’ve never even been there. I see a lot of young Black Millionaires and genuine hood people. I love the accent, the women, the food. I love the whole Texas culture. Shout out Houston and every other place the represents Texas. 💯

Side note...that house pri e has gone up due ro people moving here and offering way over asking. That also makes it hard for TX residents to own because the pay doesn't go up. Just my two cents

I agree. The same thing happened in Raleigh NC when people from NY/NJ came down for cheaper prices. So now you’ll see people from VA/NC/SC relocate to ATL and Houston and Dallas to get the next discount the discount always goes south, but the pay scale goes up as you go North.

Yes, but if you buy land then build it's cheaper. My son along with several friends bought 5.62 acres of land, had it plated then had homes built for them then sold the three lots and was able to build for average $155k.

Everyone won't have the same experience though. You NEED a car to live there, no getting around it. It took 3 buses for me to get from SW Houston to NW Houston. Depending on the area, crime is either non-existent or extreme. There's no in between lol. Spring Branch is like the Wild, Wild, West. But Bellaire, TX is placid. Texas is a prison for profit state like Georgia, where they have to keep the cells filled. You'll go to Harris County for the smallest thing, like jaywalking. When I got to the Greyhound station, every single person muttered "I gotta get tf outta here." Just be careful y'all.

I’m living in Dallas currently been here since 2019 and been thinking about moving to Houston. I come there all the time throughout the year and feel like it caters more to black people than the Dallas area. Only thing that concerns me is that there are many Houston born/raised people now living in DFW area and they all say they moved here for more money and that’s what always makes me second guess the move.

Houston job market is heavily in oil/gas, healthcare, and the restaurant industry Outside that, it's really challenging finding a good stable job that pays well. Dallas has a more diverse and stronger economy with better jobs that pay better. But the property taxes are slightly cheaper in Houston than Dallas if you plan to buy a home. But yeah Houston caters to Black people better than Houston but I like diversity

The problem is most cities in America that are built much better than Houston are either too expensive for the average Black American or has a very low Black population. Houston biggest cons is the incompetent infrastructure/traffic/ endless sprawl and weather. Those are reasons that make me want to move out of Houston at times. But than I look at other options and at my late 30s with a family, staying here at least till my kids graduate might be the best move. Now if you don’t care about predominantly White spaces and cost of living than there’s much better cities to move to in Houston. The average Black American though clearly prefers cities that offer economic opportunities, affordability and Good size black culture and representation. Or perhaps more Black Americans should move to smaller cities.

Not to sound negative but the Bay Area, and California in general, is not for Black people. I’ve been considering returning back to the DC Area or perhaps NYC but have thought about Houston too (would love the weather better than back east tbh). But yeah, H-Town sounds pretty promising for enterprising black folks.

I had the privilege of visiting Houston last month on my Southern Tour. I had been to Houston in the late 70s and it was was nothing like it is now. As Houston has a very large African American presence it was obvious they are not as progressive. While many blew me away with their business ideas I did not see their businesses thriving or supported. I was told it was because of the day of the week. However the weather and the distance to get to a venue were equally as bad it made me wonder about the climate change issue. Houston is a Oil town and the people there not only did not care about the future of the environment they actually knew nothing about it. The cost of living was lower in the suburbs just like every other city. But restaurant price were very high. My neice was discriminated against in the Woodlands and was not allowed into a roof top Lounge clearly with white patrons that was clearly playing R&B and Hip Hop music. Overall the weather and driving required is way too much for me.

Born and raised had my kids here been all over the country Htown is one of the most diverse the food is great we have communities where your neighbors may be the colors of the rainbow and we are also LGBTQ friendly. Job opportunities. A great medical center museums art district etc. oh and check out the Buffalo Soldiers museum. But we are not without our share of issues & by that I mean not just those who commit crimes are packing guns & road rage is out of control. You'll never see police on the freeways because they're to busy handling shootings deaths probably. Don't honk at people they may shoot you. A car is a must unless you live in certain areas...so if you're used to a good transit system or rail well... keep in mind our city houses more people than Alabama and is rather large so when relocating for work think about transportation for work. Housing prices are going up fast. But I still love it here it's my hometown-welcome to Htown if you make it yours.

Moved to Houston in 2013 and have been here since then, it’s a lot to do and drivable to the beaches and do not sleep on galveston, yes the water looks that way but if your want that crystal blue water then go a little down south of the gulf it’s not far. It’s a lot of businesses and nice places for black and different cultures as well, third ward is in the east end of downtown if you want black neighbors with hot real-estate and being able to walk downtown to clubs and amazing hotels and sporting events it’s a great place for you. Houston is amazing and it’s pretty dang big ( pause) from the woodlands to sugar land to katy to pearland Houston will always keep you with things to do and you won’t be robbed everywhere you go like atlanta 😂 but stay away From the grey hound and McDonald’s downtown. If someone could figure it out I am sure they would do something about it but it is what it is besides of a beach is all someone cares about enjoy florida while paying New York prices now or people can go back to the west coast and have fun paying 1.3 million for a three bedroom house.
