Houston: feels most global/international of the four cities, tons of culture, very ethnically diverse, hot, humid, hurricanes, tons to see and do (e.g. NASA, Galveston beaches, museums, Rice University is one of the top ranked universities in the USA) Dallas: white collar, finance, some tech, clean, well organized, sometimes feels like the Midwest in Texas, more of an evangelical Christian influence here and there (not in any bad way but still noticeable) Austin: liberal (for Texas, but probably more moderate or liberal libertarian compared to California), tech, music, near the Hill Country, University of Texas Austin is one of the top ranked public universities in the USA San Antonio: blue collar, military, where the Tex meets Mex, not too far from the Hill Country
@CtrlAltRetreat Жыл бұрын
Good summary. I'd like to add that Houston has the most variance in biomes of the four... which makes a lot of sense given how spread out it is. Houston is structured like LA and has similar related issues. I prefer the west and northwest side of town but the museum district is a great place to spend time as well. You've got the greatest variety of experience in Houston, but between distance and traffic, sometimes you can make it to Austin faster than getting across to the opposite end of town (I've literally spent more time driving guests to the space center or Galveston than I have going to visit friends in the Bee Cave area). Houston has a lot of parts of town you'll want to avoid and a lot of parts that are amazing. It'll be palpable when you cross to the wrong side of the tracks... Probably will want to avoid doing that at inopportune times. Dallas is very notable in that it has the least amount of problem areas of the four and the difference between ft worth and dallas is a nice contrast as well. Highland park is probably the best high end Beverly Hills style community in Texas if that's your thing, but prices are likewise to match. Great place, very pricey, you probably need to be a finance bro to make it pencil out. Try the Grapevine area for smaller town feel and more reasonable prices while being close to both city centers. Austin is great, especially the west side. The area around Hamilton Pool has some of the best trails and rock climbing caves I've ever encountered. The entire hill countre west of Buda is fantastic and the place is booming, in less than 2 years, it has sprawled out like some sort of mess though. If you didn't buy before April 2021, you probably are too late. Also, every once in a while, the local political scene gets pretty stupid ideas and the entire downtown gets overrun by homeless camps and crime before a referrendum forces them to sweep things again. Some of the best restauranteers of California picked up shop and moved to Austin, best food by far imho. If you're into micro brews, check out Jester Kings and if you like a on the water, watch the sunset feel, I highly suggest the Oasis and Steiner Ranch. By the time I left though, the place had been growing unchecked for some time and the infrastructure was getting wholely overwhelmed. Austin was simply not designed for the number of folks that moved into it and they're constantly having to redo roads to try to make things work. Less expensive parts were still around but that was a while ago Pflugerville was an inexpensive area that put you pretty close to things. Go relax at the Domain on a Autumn evening. San Antonio has some fantastic areas on the north west side. Dominion, Boerne, everything all the way up to Fredricksburg is all fantastic. As a place to visit, the area around the river walk and the parks, zoo, etc on the north side make for the highest density of family friendly attractions for a quick vacation of the four imho. It's genuinely a fun town to go around and it's easy to get around too as the roads are more than sufficient. It feels like they built the infrastructure for way more people than the districts are actually designed to hold. As pat has mentioned, the place has a nice pleasant down to earth feel to it. Also, it has the easiest access to Corpus Cristi and Padre Island of the four and that's a great way to enjoy the gulf.

The largest METRO area is the DFW Metroplex followed by the Houston Metro Area. The largest individual CITIES by population in order from most to least are Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and Fort Worth. You may have confused people when you mentioned San Antonio has the smallest metro area. It does, but the city itself is the Second largest in Texas.
@ogdnaemoc10 ай бұрын
Actually SA metro is larger than Austin, for the moment as Austin catching up fast and may overtake it in 10-15 years. However, both cities will probably be considered one single megapolis as it almost has 5 million between the two and likely to double in population in the next 30-40 years. Also it has the best freeway system and easy to get from one place to another (not so Austin- worst freeway of any of the large metros) and will get even better with expansion of loop 1604 in the north and NW of the city.
@thullraven110 ай бұрын
@@ogdnaemoc I only went off the video creator's statement about SA having the smallest metro area. I never researched it because I live in DFW Metro Area, and I knew we have the biggest metro area. San Antonio is waaaay to expensive for what the city has to offer (from houses, apt to bars). Only entertainment/dining options are the Rim or Downtown. Everything is just dead in between. You either have million dollar homes in Alamo heights area or Dominion, or run down neighborhoods. The airport is small, which may be good, but most of your flights connects through Houston or Dallas. Only nice thing I like about SA is the pretty hill country, but that’s like 25 miles north.

One thing to keep in mind with the Houston area is (not speaking from personal experience, just what my common sense tells me), you might want to live in the northern suburbs just for the fact that, when there's a hurricane (think Rita, Ike), if you're north of the city, you can generally "get out of dodge" sooner and faster and evacuate to Austin or Dallas (or anywhere else). Also avoid the southern areas of Houston, especially southeast portions of Houston (e.g., Pasadena), as they really smell from all the pollution from oil refineries, plastics plants, and the like.

Very informative video. I am from New York City and I am strongly considering Texas or Nevada for moving. My question is which city in Texas would you recommend for someone who is in their 40's and is single and lived most of his life in New York City? I guess I would be curious to learn which city in Texas is most similar to New York City if possible? I do drive but at the same time I would be interested in a city which has a mix of driving and local transportation where there is a decent amount of trains or buses for commute to work. Thanks for the great video most appreciated.

The trendy place to live is Austin. Houston is more diverse (Mexican Black Italian Vietnamese etc..) Dallas i dont really know. San Antonio is great low crime (even though lately its starting to look like Houston on the news) The job market in S.A.? I moved here in the 90s and honestly the pay is not good. If you have no skills its not good. The major influence is Mexican American but there are also Italian American (im both on each of my parents side) There are Irish and British. Others as well. The music scene here? Depends on what your in to.

@@stevelira52524 Thanks Stevlra, I just came back from Texas and there were thing's I liked about it and things I didn't. But then again what can you really tell in 1 week? My favorite was San Antonio (shocking) because of the food and the stores and the local communities there had a uniqueness. Austin was cool, I enjoyed Austin a lot, it had a New York vibe but different. Down side was the prices felt too much like New York. Houston was OK, once you traveled far away from the Airport. Things around the Airport area leaves you with a feeling of "I shouldn't be around here". But down town Houston was not to bad I enjoyed the city there. I guess from what you mentioned in terms of employment that is the only thing which concerns me the most. Because I am studying software development and I am working an entry job which require I.T. skills but I wonder how that translate into the job market over there? Thanks for the reply I found the things you mentioned helpful.

It's like no matter how hard someone tries to make San Antonio look bad anyone who's smart enough can figure out that whoever is claiming that San Antonio isn't the best place to live figures out that these people that are claiming that San Antonio is not the place to live at are all racist, and that's why they don't want you to live in San Antonio. There's a lot of bad stuff about Houston. The weather is miserable, the crime is scary, the sprawl is annoying, the hurricanes and flooding can be damaging, the traffic is crazy and drivers are even crazier, and outta all the big cities in Texas, Houston is definitely the most rude. Houston just has such an awesome fun vibe to it that makes it worth living here.

I was born and raised in Houston -- still get down there 2-3 times per year to visit family -- but have lived most of my life in Fort Worth, and spent brief periods living in Dallas and Nacogdoches. Based on my experience there's lots on inaccurate and downright strange information in this video. Made more confusing by the comparisons. Sometimes the guy compares cities, sometimes metro areas, and sometimes cities vs metro areas, which is apples-and-oranges, telling you almost nothing. To clarify bad/misleading info shared here: 1) Houston is the largest city in Texas (twice the size of Dallas), but Dallas-Fort Worth is the largest metro area. 2) San Antonio is not the third-largest city in Texas, it is second-largest, having passed Dallas years ago. 3) Austin and San Antonio are a single contiguous metro area (Austin-San Antonio) of about 5 million. (Houston-Woodlands-Sugarland = 5.85 million; Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington = 5.9 million). 4) This is the strangest one. Frisco in far-north suburban Dallas is booming, but is nowhere near being the "the third part of that Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex," which is not considered "Dallas-Fort-Worth-Frisco." (Have lived in Texas all my life and never heard that phrase before.) The greater metro area is called Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington because Arlington is more than twice the size of Frisco and is a much more significant driver of the metro economy. 5) Houston is the most culturally and ethnically diverse city in Texas, and certainly the most international. In some areas, the street signs are bilingual (mainly for Asian languages), and there are more languages spoken on the streets of Houston than in New York. Are these the "riff raff" the guy condescendingly mentioned in the video? 6) Dallas is probably the most pretentious city in Texas. When I moved to North Texas in 1978, Dallas led the nation in sales of Mercedes Benz and Dale Carnegie courses, and the standing joke was that Dallas was home to more "$30,000-per-year millionaires" than anywhere in Texas. That evolved into a quip that the Dallas city motto was, "If you've got it, flaunt it. And you you don't have it, make everyone think you do." 7) Among other things, Austin is known for being self-consciously and terminally hip, a reputation that long predates the current influx of California expats. All big Texas cities have a liberal enclave, but Austin is the bastion of Texas liberalism -- so much so that millions of Texans call it the "People's Republic of Austin." According to the Texas DOT, Austin also has the worst traffic in Texas. Yes, even more congested than Houston or Dallas.

I gotta disagree completely when it comes to Dallas, its probably the dirtiest of the 4. After staying there for months the only time i go to Dallas now is when im passing thru it to get to Oklahoma lol Not only that, its the most isolated city of the big 4. Living in Austin, Houston or San Antonio gives you quick access to each other with a little drive so you can very much enjoy them all whenever you want, then theres Dallas..... a trip you gotta plan to make, not something you just drive to on a whim unless youre already in Austin. IMO if you can afford it, Austin is the best choice AND has the quickest access to all of the big 4, if not then Houston is easily the 2nd best option and like mentioned in the video, the only one with close access to an actual beach. San Antonio 3rd mainly because you get to still enjoy both Austin and Houston living in San Antonio and Dallas 4th mainly because of how isolated it is from the others. Austin to Houston is about a 2 hr drive ( and vice versa ) Austin to Dallas is a 3 hr drive ( and vice versa ) Austin to San Antonio is a 1 hr. ( and vice versa ) 45 if the right person is behind the wheel That is going based off the center of each city to each other, obviously if you live more on the outskirts of each the times will vary. I guess for me location and making the most of it is my biggest factor but overall you cant really go bad with any of them, Dallas is just too isolated for me. But id admit San Antonio is probably the least fun of the 4 but the most affordable.

Dallas has the best light rail network, and DARTs bus system is probably the most expansive. If you want that, go to north or east Dallas (unless you're living city center). The suburbs also have the most walkable downtowns, the problem is that a lot of them (cough cough arlington and grand prairie) don't have public transit access to the walkable areas, but they do have city subsidized taxi services that are cheaper than uber so there's that.
@Mischa21xo7 ай бұрын
If you want to be safe, I would certainly invest in a car. You absolutely will not regret it. Especially if you are a woman. The economy is just getting worse and worse and people are getting more desperate and it will only get worse very quickly so crime is rising everywhere. I would not want to be stuck on any public transportation in the times we are about to go through in this country
